This invention relates to ice shaving or grindin machlnes for use in shavlng ice in the pro uct ion of a confection which is commerciall known as snow cone. This confection is produced by filling a pa er cone with ground ice and applying a avoring syrup thereto.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a simple and effective machine to'which pieces of ice may be delivered and which is operative to rapidly grind the ice into finely divided particles and deliver the same into a dispensing cylinder for convenient insertion into a paper cone.
One form which the invention mayassume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 3 is a plan section taken on line IIIIII of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan section taken on line IV-- IV of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 indicates an ice grind ing machine formed of a vertical cylinder 11 having a supporting base 11a. The upper end of the cylinder 11 is enlarged and constitutes a hopper 14 into which pieces of ice may be inserted.
. At one side of the cylinder '11 its wall is formed with a vertical slot 15 which forms a communicating passageway between the grinding cylinder 11 and a dispensing cylinder 12. The dispensing cylinder is formed integral with the grinding cylinder in alignment with the slot 15. A grinding blade 17 is arranged in the slot at one side thereof and its cutting edge projects a slight distance within the grinding cylinder 11.
Arranged within the cylinder 11.is a cone 18 which is secured on a shaft 19 rotatably supported concentrically of the cylinder 11.

' Formed on the surface of the cone .18 is a hehcal feedingrblade 20. This blade isfor the purpose of rotating the ice onthe cylin der and feeding the particlesthereof down wardly over the blade 17.
When the machine is in operation the cone 18 is revolved continuously so that thegice in the cylinder 11 will be revolved and pass over the blade 17. The cone 18 serves to maintain the ice at the perimeter of the cylinder as it is reduced and the helical blade 20 causes the ice to revolve as it is fed downwardly over the grinding blade 17 To revolve the cone 18 the shaft 19 is fitted with a worm gear 21 which is in mesh with a worm 22 secured on a shaft 23. This shaft is adapted to be driven by an electric motor 24 through the medium of a clutch 25. This clutch is engaged and disengaged by means of a lever arrangement 26 so that the motor.

In forming the snow cone it is desirable that the ice be molded in the shape of a cone at the top of the cone. I accomplish this by providing a hollow conical plunger 27 in the dispensing cylinder 12. This cone shaped plunger is fitted with an operating member 28 which is vertically reciprocable in a slot 29 formed vertically of the dispensing cylinder 12. The conical lunger 27 is connected by a light tension spring 30 to the top of the dispensing cylinder 12. This spring is for the purpose of returning the plun er 27 to its uppermost position after it as been moved downwardly to dispense the ice from the dispensing cylinder.
In operation of the machine, the cover 31 of the hopper 14 is opened and the hopper and cylinder 11 are filled with pieces of ice. The clutch 25 is then engaged which causes the cone 18 and the blade 20 thereon to revolve. As the ice is revolved over the blade 17 it will be shaved or ground and the ground particles or shavings will pass through the slot 15 into the dispensing chamber. When suflicient ground or shaved ice has been delivered to the dispensing cylmder 12, the operating member 28 of the plunger 27 is depressed causing the plunger 27 to move downwardly packing the ice in the cone 32 and molding the ice at the upper end of the cone to a conical shape. The operat ng member 28 is then released and the spring 30 returns the plunger 27 to its uppermost ciprocable in said downwardly over the blade, a helical blade formed on the exterior surface of the cone for assisting in revolving the ice and forcing the same downwardly over the cuttin edge of the blade, a dispensing cylinder ormed on the cylinder in alignment with the slot, said slot fo i'ng 'a'communication between the interior f the cylinder and the interior of the dispensing cglinder, and a plunger re- 1s ensing cylinder.
3. A machine of t e character described comprising a cylinder having a slot formed in the wall thereof, a bladeat one side of said slot and having an edge projecting into the cylinder, a revolublecone arranged within the cylinderiandhaving a helical blade formed-thereon whereby revolution of the position. Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A machine of the character described comprising a cylinder, a hopper'formed at the upper end of the cylinder and into which pieces of ice may be deposited, said cylinder having a vertical slot formed in the wall cylinder in alignment with the slot, a vertical blade secured to the cylinder at one side of the slot and having a sharpened edge projectin into the cylinder, said cone being revolu 1e whereby to cause ice deposited in the cylinder to be revolved over the sharpened edge of the blade as it travels lon itudinally downwardly over the blade, an a helical blade formed on the exterior surface of the cone for assisting in revolving the ice and forcin the same downwardly over the cutting e go of the blade.
