TOOL FOR ATTACHING EYE SETS Filed Dec. 10, 1926 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOI 2%! w 9i I I 4; AORE Patented Dec. 24, 1929 UNEEED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAMUEL MARCUS, OF lBROOIKLYIil' NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
TO MABKON MANUFACTURING CO. INC., 01* NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK TOOL FOR ATTACHING EYE SETS Application filed December 10, 1926.
This invention relates to a tool forattaching eye sets in doll heads and the hke, the same being in the nature of an improvement v upon the tool shown and described in patent' of Alexander Konofi', No. 1,621,073.
An object of the present invention is to provide a tool by means of which the eye sets may be readily carried into the doll head and by which the eye sets may be quickly, accurately and etficiently attached within the doll head.
A more detailed object is to provide a tool for use in the attachment of eye sets which have attaching parts movable in a straight line away from each other into attaching position and the tool providing operatlng means for said attaching parts also movable in a straightline for moving the attaching parts to attaching position.
A further object is to provide a tool as above referred to including means co-operative with the eye set for insuring centralization of the eye set within the doll head.
A further object is to so construct the tool as to constitute a rigid part thereof for use as a guide by which to insure uniform positioning of the eye sets within succeeding doll heads.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles constituting the invention and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of the invention Fig. l is a side elevational view of a tool constructed in accordance with this invention, an eye set being shown by dotted lines in position thereon and a doll head being also shown by dotted lines in position to receive the eye set.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the eye set carry ing end of the tool as seen in Fig. 1, the
Serial No. 153,817.
eye set being here again shown by dotted lines in position upon the tool, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane of line IIIIII of Fig. 2, the eye set in this instance being shown in full lines.
Referring to the drawings for describing in detail the structure shown therein, the reference character L indicates a suitable standard from which projects a horizontal extension G at the outer end of which is an eye set carrying portion H, said eye set carrying portion being in the form of a cross-head and providing a flat upper surface or platform 1 upon which the eye set is adapted to rest and be carried. At the rear margin of the surface 1 there is provided a ledge 2 for assisting in determining the proper position of the eye set upon said surface, or platform.
The eye set carrying portion H is formed to provide also an under-cut guide-way 3 longitudinally thereof and transverse to the length of the extension G within which guideway is mounted a pair of slides 4c and 5 each having a central stud as 6 and 7 thereon projecting upwardly through slots 8 and 9 respectively.
Pivotally connected with the studs is a pair of links as 10 and 11 which are in turn pivotally connected to the outer end of a slide rod 12 by a single pivot pin as 13.
The rod 12 is mounted to slide longitudinally within a bore 14: formed to receive it in the extension G, the rear end of said rod continuing through the standard L and being connected with a hand lever 15 by means of which the rod may he slid back and forth at the will of an operator.
The lever 15 is pivotally mounted upon the standard L as by means of a pivot pin 16 and has a slot as 17 within which engages a cross pin 18 carried by the rod 12.
Swinging movement of the lever 15 will thus cause the studs 6 and 7 to move toward and away from each other along the slots 8 and 9 according to the direction of movement of said lever. Since slots 8 and 9 are in a straight line with respect to each other the path of movement of the studs will also be in a straight line.
Projecting upwardly from the surface 1 is also provided a stud 19 centrally between the studs 6 and 7, the stud 19 being however at all times stationary.
The eye set which the tool here shown is designed for handling consists of a body portion 20 upon which the eyes 2121 are movably supported. The body portion is intended to extend horizontally across the interior of the doll head, and intermediate its length is provided with a pair of arms 2222 which project forwardly or upwardly from the body portion and directly support the cross rod 23 at the opposite ends of which the eyes 2121 are mounted. The arms 22-22 are provided with aligned bearings as 2+l2 l within which the cross rod is received.
The body portion 20 is of channel shape in cross section and within the channel thereof is arranged a pair of attaching members along the channel and their outer end porions are ormec wi an s as 7 which t f l tht g 27 2 when the attaching members are slid outwardly, are thrust into the cheek portions of the doll head to thereby fasten the eye set within the doll head.
Before the application of the eye set into the doll head the attaching members 25 and 26 are of course in their relatively inner positions, and their movement outwardly for driving the tangs 27 into embedded relation within the cheek portions of the doll head is not performed until after the eye set has been moved into a proper and correct position within the doll head.
The fit of the attaching members within the channel of body 20 is sufficiently tight so that the attaching members will have no movement except by the application of considerable force, such as the present tool is designed to apply. For this purpose each of the attaching members is preferably formed with an aperture as 28 the-rein arranged to receive the studs 6 and 7 of the tool.
In order to insure that the spreading apart of the studs 6 and 7, by means of the lever 15, will produce a uniform amount of movement of the two attaching members with respect to the body 20 the body is provided with a central aperture 29 arranged to be engaged over the central stud 19 of the tool. This engagement of stud 19 with the body 20 will serve to hold thebody, and consequently the eyes 2121, relatively stationary while the attaching members 25 and 26 are being forced outwardly uniform distances by the swinging 0r toggle movement of the links 10 and 11 upon operation of lever 15.
f desired the tangs 27 27 may be slightly inclined with respect to the direction of move ment of the attaching members so that the eye set will be automatically eased back with respect to the eye sockets of the doll head co-incident to movement of the tangs into the materialof the doll head.
The studs 6 and 7 are preferably slightly under-cut on their outer sides as at 30 to insure a better grip upon the attaching members during the time while the attaching members are being forced away from each other by said studs. The relatively inner faces of the studs are preferably rounded upwardly as at 31 to permit easy and automatic discharge of the eye set from the tool when the lever 15 is swung backwardly to draw the studs toward each other after the attaching members have been driven home in the doll head.
Of course the eye set may include the usual weight as 32 by which to cause oscillation of the eyes in the usual manner after their attachment into the doll head, and it may be here mentioned that the upper surface as 33 of extension G provides an appropriate support upon which the Weight may rest, as clearly seen in Fig. 1, during the time while the eye set is being positioned by means of the tool into the doll head.
In operation, the tool being preferably fastened firmly to a suitable support, by any appropriate means, an eye set is placed upon the platform 1 in the manner fully described, with the several studs of the tool engaging within their appointed apertures of the eye set. A doll head is moved over the eye set and tool to the position indicated in Fig. 1, namely with the eye members 2121 of the eye set seated within the eye sockets as 3% of the head, and with the eye set thus positioned the lever 15 is swung forwardly to operate the toggle links 10 and 11 for driving the retaining members firmly into the cheek portions of the head. By now moving the lever 15 backwardly the studs 6 and 7 will move toward each other and, due to action of the inclined surfaces 31thereof, will cam the eye set upwardly and thus discharge it from the lugs and from the tool so that the head, with the assembled eye set, may be readi-y withdrawn.
T he rounded surfaces 31 of the studs 6 and '7 provide substantially vertical portions near their lower ends adjacent the inner edges of the apertures 28 so t iat if for any reason it is desired to remove an eye set from a doll head after the set has been once attached it is simply necessary to hold the eye set against upward movement when the studs are moved toward each other. The retaining member. will in this case be moved backward by tht studs so that their outer ends become detacned from the doll head.
It will be understood of course that if desired the tool may be inserted into the head instead of applying the head over the tool, but this is a matter immaterial.
The upper surface 33 of extension also provides a guide rest adapted to be engaged by an inner surface part as of the neck portion of the doll head. Engagement of the portion 35 with the upper surface of extension G at the same time as the eye sockets are in engagement with the es of the eye set will insure a correct posit on of the doll head at the time of driving home the attaching members, and this is of particular im portance in the application of eye sets into a large number of doll heads in that it constitutes means whereby an unskilled operator may readily apply the eye sets with uniform accuracy in all of the doll heads.
Eye sets of different sizes, for. doll heads of different sizes, may be readily attached by means of the present tool, it being simply required that the lev r 15 be moved to a greater or less extent according to the amount of movement desired for the attaching members of the different size eye sets and doll heads.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the foliowing claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above des ription or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustratve only and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. 1n a tool for attaching an eye set within a doll head, said tool comprising means for supporting the eye set and by which to position the eye set within the doll head, means to efiect attachment of the eye set within the doll head comprising a pair of members movable in a straight line with respect to each other, and means to so move said members.
