This invention pertains to reamers, and more particularly to an expansion type reamer.
One of the objects of this invent-ion is to provide a reamer having blades adjustable for expanding the diameter of the reamer with improved means for locking the blades in adjusted position.
Another object is to provide such a reamer with locking means, which will prevent the blades being drawn out or moved from their adjusted position by the operation of withdrawing the reamer from the reamed hole.
Further objects will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a view partly in section of an expansion reamer embodying this invention;
Figure 2 is an end view of the same; and
Figure 3 is a partial section on line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a head provided with a series of slots 2, each having an inclined bottom 3. Mounted in each of the slots 2 is a cutter or blade 1 having an inclined edge adapted to rest upon the bottom 3 and slidable therealong. Each blade has a beveled rear end 5 adapted for engagement with the inner conical surface 6 of an adjusting ring 7 threaded on the head 1. The rin 7 may be provided with a scale 8 for indicating the amount of adjustment. A locking ring or jamb nut 9 is also threaded on the head 1 for locking the ring 7 in adjusted position.
Each blade 4: is provided with a groove 10 therealong. This groove is tapered, becoming narrower at the rear end of the blade and so placed that its lower edge 11 incline outwardly toward the rear end of the blade with respect to the inner edge thereof, as illustrated in Figure 1. The groove also becomes shallower toward its rear end, as illustrated in Figure 3.
Seated in the head 1, opposite each blade 4 and so as to engage .the groove 10 thereof, is a tapered pin 12 having a screw portion 13 threaded into the head 1, and a pilot tip 14: engaging a corresponding socket in the head. The pin 12 may be provided with a claims, in the details Serial No. 304,458.
When the pin 12 is unscrewed partially, the blade 1- is released for adjustment by the ring 7. lVhen the proper adjustment has been obtained, the pin 12 is screwed home, so as to bind the pin against the blade el. As the pin engages the groove 10, the blade l will be held securely against the bottom 3 of the slot and against any radial displacement. On account of the fact that the bottom 11 of the groove 10 inclines outwardly toward. the rear, the pin 12 will also prevent movement of the blade forwardly on the head. This will pr vent any movement of the blades when the reainer is withdrawn from the reamed hole. Accordingly, the reamer will maintain its adjustment and will ream successive holes to exactly the same diameter. The threaded engagement of the pin 12 with the head provides that, by unscrewing the same, it is positively loosened from the blade 1, so that the latter is released for adjustment. The pilot 1 1 insures accurate centering of the pin 12 and supports and steadies the same when loosened for the adjustment of the blades 4.
It is obvious that various changes may be made, within the scope of the appended of construction without departing from the spirit or" this invention. It is, therefore, to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the specific details shown and/or described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. An expansion reamer, comprising, a head having inclined slots therealong, blades adjustable in said slots, the blade having a guide groove therealong, and a tapered pin engaging said groove to secure the blade in adjusted position, said pin having threaded engagement with said head whereby the same may be moved to clamp and release the blade.
An expansion reamer, comprising, a head having inclined slots therealong, blades adjustable in said slots, the blade having a tapered guide groove therealong, and a tapered pin engaging said groove to secure the blade in adjusted position, said 3111 having threaded engagement with said head whereby the same may be moved to clamp and release the blade.
3. An expansion reamer, comprising, a head having inclined slot-s therealong, blades adjustable in said slots, the blade having a tapered groove therealong whose inner edge inclines outwardly toward the rear end of the blade with respect to the inner edge of the blade, and a tapered pin engaging said groove" to secure the blade in adjusted position, said pin having threaded engagement with said head whereby the same may be moved-t clamp and release the blade.
4. An expansion reamer, comprising, a head having inclined slots therealong, blades adjustable in said slots, the blade having a tapered groove therealong whose inner edge inclines outwardly toward the rear end of the blade with respect to the inner edge of the blade, means for moving the blade along its slot, and a tapered pin engaging said groove to secure the blade in adjusted position, said pin having threaded engagement with said head whereby the same may be moved to 5 clamp and release the blade.
5. An expansion reamer, comprising, a head having inclined slots therealong, blades adjustable in said slots, the blade having a guide groove therealong, and a tapered pin engagingsaid groove to secure the blade in adjusted position, said pin having threaded engagement with said head whereby the same may be moved to clamp and release the blade and a pilot tip engaging said head.
