To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRED HUNZIKER, a citizen of the United States. residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Adjustable Cutting Tool, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention pertains to adjustable cuttin tools, especially taps, chaser s, boring an reaming tools, and my object is toprovide a tool of simple construction within which a set of cutters may be readily adjusted outwardly and inwardly by a pair of screw adjusting elements each separately accessible from the front or working end of the device. These adjusting elements also coact in locking all of the cutters firmly and accurately in adjusted position. A further object is to provide a tool in which the cutters may be made from standard stock by any skilled mechanic in the shop where the tool is in use, thereby permitting replacements without the delays incident to the purchase of cutters outside of the shop and also permitting many different forms'of cutters to be constructed in the shop and used in the tool for different classes of work.
In the drawing accompanying this application, Fig. 1 is a side view and Fig. 2 an end view of m improved cutting tool. Fig. 3 is a sectiona view of the body of the device showing a set of cutters or taps locked therein. Fig. 4 is a sectional .,view coresponding to Fig. 3 showing a slightly modified form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the adjusting locking nut;

The invention comprises a cylindrical body 2 having a reduced shank 3 adapted to be clamped or fastened within any metal working machine such as a screw machine, lathe, etc. A round smooth axial bore 4 having a flaring entrance 5 extends inwardly from the front end of body 2 to approximately the full depth of the body, where a shoulder 6 is provided, and a screw-threaded opening 7 of reduced diameter extends from the base of said bore into shank 3. Body 2 is also provided with a series of round openings 8 which radiate at uniform distances apart from bore 4 and extend from about midlength of the bore at an angle or inclination of approxlmatel in respect to the longitudinal axis 0 the-body, so that theouter ends of said openings meet both the end and side faces of the body and intersect the circular end edge or corner 9 of the body.
Each inclined opening 8 in the body is adapted to receive and hold a round cylindrical cutting tool 10 which is in the form of a screw cutter or chaser in the present showing, and in which I form the cutting edge coincident with the axis of the cutter and radial with the axis of the body when the cutter is in. place within the body. The opposite end of each cutter has a semi-circular face 12 which is at right angles to the axis of the cutter, and a segmental corner portion 14 of the end of the cutter is removed opposite end face 12 to shorten the length of the cutter so that it may project into bore 4 without striking or engaging adjusting screw 15. A square-sided notch 16 is also cut into one side of cutter 10 on the opposite side of end face 12, the faces of the notch 16 being obliquely'related to face 12. The several cutters are constructed alike and when introduced into openings 8, each cutter is adapted to bear directly againsta beveled enlargement 17 on screw 15 and which screw extends on opposite sides of said enlargement to permit the lower end to enter and engage the screw-threaded opening 7 while the upper or outer end of the screw is where screw-driver engagement may be made with the slotted end of the screw. In turning the screw in one direction the beveled collar or portion 17 will recede or move downwardly away from the axis of each opening 8 and the end of the cutter 10 therein, thereby permitting each cutter to be moved and adjusted inwardly.
In order that the cutters may be adjusted toward the axis of body 2 in the same degree and coincidently, I provide a round screw nut 18 to engage and be turned on the outer end of screw 15, and this round nut has a flat bottom end which is adapted to engage the flat horizontal seat or face in each notch 16 of the respective cutters. Nut 18 not adapted to project upwardly through bore 4 into the flaring entrance 5 only acts to draw the cutters inwardly at the i clamping the projectin ends of the cutters between the nut and t e beveled collar 17. Nut 18 is also provided with a screw-drlver slot which is exposed within flaring entrance 5, and by turning nut 18 to unclamp the cutters from screw 15 the cutters may be expanded or adjusted outwardly by turning screw 15 so that it will be raised or moved outwardly in respect to the cutters. the desired adjustment has been made nut 18 can be turned to clamp the parts together.
In Fig. 4, I show an adjustlng screwhavinga collar 20 which has a fiat operating face at its upper side at right angles to the axis of the screw, and the cutters 10 are notched at their-ends to correspond with this formation of collar. While this modified arrangement works successfully, I prefer to use the beveled collar'because it provides a solid rest squared to the axial thrust of the cutters and a more positive and accurate mode of adjusting the cutters.
Preliminary to fashioning the cutting face of the cutter the cutter stock is retired within the body as far as it will go; then the clearance surface 20 back of the cutting edge is rounded on a circle concentric with the body. In use as the cutter is expanded to cause the actual radial cutting edge to describe a larger circle the rounded clearance surface is placed eccentric to that circle and the cutter will have more and more clearance as it is adjusted outwardly greater distances from the axis of the tool.
What I claim is:
1. An adjustable cutting tool, comprising a cylindrical body having a plurality of cutters mounted at an inclination within one end thereof, and a pair of screw elements adapted to adjust said cutters inwardly and outwardly, each separately accessible from said end and co-acting to clamp all the cutters in adjusted position.
2. An adjustable cutting tool, comprising a cylindrical body having an axial bore and a series of inclined openings radially in respect to said bore, a set of cutters within said inclined openings, a screw member adjustable axially within said bore adapted to move said cutters outwardly, a second screw member also adjustable axially within said bore adapted to move said cutters inwardly, and each screw member being accessible at When the working end of said body to effect adjustments and locking of said parts.
3. An adjustable cutting tool, a body having inclined openings, cutters seated within said openings having notched inner ends, a screw member engaged with said body having a collar bearing against the inner ends of said cutters, and a screw member extending into the front end of said body into bearing engagement with the notched portions of said cutters.
4. An adjustable cutting tool, comprising a cylindrical body having an axial bore and inclined openings, cutters extending through said openings into said bore, a screw member engaged with said body having a beveled enlargement seated within said bore in bearing engagement with the inner ends of sair cutters, and a locking member for said out ters mounted within the outer end of said gore upon the outer end of said screw mem- 5. An adjustable cutting tool, comprising a cylindrical body having a smooth axial bore with an enlarged entrance at one end and a reduced screw-threaded opening at its opposite end, and provided with inclined openings radiall thereof open to said bore, a screw member within said screw-threaded opening having an enlargement fitting said bore, a screw-threaded nut within the outer end of said bore having a central opening through which said screw member is adapted to be reached for independent adjustment, and a set of cutters adapted to be seated within said inclined openings in adjustable locking connection with said screw-member and nut.
6. An adjustable cutting tool, comprising a cylindrical body having an axial bore and inclined openings radially open to said bore, a cutter seated within each opening having a cutting edge at its outer'end with a rounded clearance portion which is concentric with the body when the cutter is retired within the body to its maximum, and a pair of coacting devices within said bore adapted to adjust said cutters longitudinally and to lock the same within the body.
