and the like, and the principal object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device of this type. In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which my invention may assume, and in these drawings:

I show my invention as applied to a token control 11 operatively joined to a gasoline 30 pump 12 by bolts 51. The token control 11 has a base 13 extending the entire length thereof while a cover 14 extending over the token control 11 is secured to the sides of the base 13 in 311:. suitable manner, such by 5 machine screws. A round slot 15 on the upper side of the cover 14; provides an opening for receiving a token 29 and communicates with a chute 16 having two rails 17 disposed along the sides thereof and forming the sides of the 40 chute 16. The lower ends of both of the rails 17 are tapered off from the inside forming cams.

outside edges of the lower part of the base 13, while two cam arms 18 pivotally mounted on the slidable element 20 by pins 19 form a continuation of the rails 17 and provide sides of the chute 16 on the slidable element 20. The upper ends of the cam arms 18 are tapered off from the outside and cooperate with the lower ends of the two rails 17 and are normally held in a position substantially parallel to the plane of the chute 16 by the tapered ends of the rails 17 when the slioable element 20 is retracted. Two fiat springs 22 exerting pressure against the outside of the two cam arms 18 at their lower ends are secured to two studs 23 by machine screws 24, while two adjusting screws 25 provide ameans for regulating the tension of the springs 22 against the lower ends of the cam arms 18. Two adjusting screws 26 passing through the lower ends of the cam arms 18 and engaging two studs 27 positioned on the slidable element 20 provide means for regulating the distance which the cam arms 18 can be moved towards the chute 16.
Two pins 28 positioned near the lower ends of the cam arms 18 and extending toward the chute 16 from the opposite sides thereof provide means for engaging the edges of a token 29 inserted into the chute 16.
For reciprocating the slidable element 20 there is provided a bell crank lever 34 having a handle 35 and an 36, journaled on a shaft 37, and supported by a bracket 38 secured to the base of the token control 11 by bolts 39. The upper end of the arm 36 is forked providing two prongs 4:0 both having small apertures e1 near their top ends receiving pins 42 securely fastened to the sides of the slidable element 20, while two apertures 43 on opposite sides of the cover 1% of the token control 11 permit the slidable element 20 to be reciprocated the length of the apertures 43 when the handle 35 is actuated. A coil spring 44 having one of its ends secured to the upper end of the slidable element 20 accessible to and its other end secured to the upper part of the base 13 provides means for retracting the slidable element 20 after each advancement thereof.
A trap door 30, forming a continuation of the chute 16 between the cam arms 18 near their lower ends, swings downwardly providing an opening into a slug chamber 31 which is accessible to the operator of the token control 11 for returning to the operator thereof any token which is not advanced to operate the gasoline pump 12. The trap door 30 and the lower part of the slidable element 20 are so positioned and adjusted that the trap door is in closed position when the slidable element 20 is retracted and the trap door 30 is permitted to be opened by gravity when the slidable member is advanced. A second trap door 32 also forming a continuation of the chute 16 is similarly constructed and operated as the trap door 30 and is positioned just below the trap door 30 and provides an opening into a coin chamber 33 which is inthe operator thereof. Two coin guards 53 having their lower ends securely fastened to the lower part of the base 13 of the token control 11 extend over a part of the lower part of the chute 16 providing a means for guiding a token 29 in the chute 16 at the lower end thereof.
A standard positioned at the lower end of the chute 16 is secured to the lower end of the base 13 by bolts 46, while rotatably mounted in the standard 45 is a shaft 47 having journaled thereon between the arms of the standard 45 a lever 48 having a long arm 54 extending from the shaft 47 to a point below the lower end of the chute 16 swinging between the opposed sides of the coin guards 53 and moving in a slot 56 in the chute 16 while the short arm 53, forming a continuation ofthe long arm 54 on the opposite side of the shaft 47, has attached to it a coil spring 52 the other end of which is fastened to the'lower end of the standard 45, thereby providing means for normally holding the lever 48 against the upper end of the slot 56 and retracting the lever 48 after each advancement thereof. The shaft 47 extends through the cover 14 of the token control 11 into the base of the gasoline pump 12 and to a valve 49 in the pump 12, thereby providing means for actuating the valve 49 in the ump 12, while the arm journaled on the shaft 47 in the pump 12 provides'a means for closing the valve 49. A full and complete description of the pump 12 together with a detailed explanation of the operation thereof are found in my co-pending application for Letters Patent Serial Number 282,646, filed June 4, 1928.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that in order to operate the token control 11 the operator inserts a token in the slot 16, and that such token will be carried by gravity to a point substantially near the lower ends of the cam arms 18. It will further be apparent that after such token is inserted and advanced as above described the operator of the token control will then move the handle 35 in a direction substantially toward the gasoline pump 12, and that this actuation of the handle 35 will cause the forked arm 36 to advance the slidable element 20 downwardly and toward the pump 12.
It further will be apparent that as the slidable element 20 is advanced the upper ends of the cam arms 18 will be released permitting the springs 22 to force the lower ends of the cam arms 18 toward the chute 16, and that the pins 28 mounted at the lower ends of the cam arms 18 will be advanced towards the chute 16, also that if the token in the chute 16 at this point is not provided with milled edges that the pins 28 will not engage the edges of such token, but will slide over such token without advancing it, and that after the slidable element is advanced to a certain point the trap door 30 will be permitted to swing downwardly by gravity into the slug chamber 34 and that such unmilled edge token Wlll drop into such slug chamber.
It further will be apparent that if the token in the chute 16 is provided with milled edges that the pins 28 moving toward the chute 16 as the slidable element 20 is advanced will bear upon a top segment of the milled edges of such token and will catch into the abutments thus presented, and push such milled edge token forward along the chute 16 ahead of the trap door 30, and that as such milled edge token is advanced ahead of the trap door 30 it will swing downwardly the long arm 54 of the lever 48 journaled on the shaft 47 mounted in the standard 45, and that after such milled edge token is advanced to a point over the trap door 32 it will bereleased by gravity from the pins 28, since said pins do not have sufficient grasp to support the weight of the token, and the latter will drop through the trap door 32 into the coin chamber 33 which is inaccessible to the operator of said token control 11.
It further will be apparent that as the milled edge token moves the long arm 54 of the lever 48 downwardly it will cause the shaft 47 to be rotated, also that the rotation of the shaft 47 will actuate the valve 49 in the pump 12 causing gasoline to flow from the pump 12, and that the arm 50 on the shaft 47 will close the valve 49 after each actuation thereof. Also that the pump 12 and the token control 11 may be adjusted and regulated so that a milled edge token of a predetermined size will cause the pump 12 to deliver a predetermined amount of liquid.
Under these circumstances it will be clear that the embodiment of my invention herein shown and described accomplishes at least the principal object of my invention.

I claim 1. A token control, as for use in a vending machine, comprising: a chute positioned so that a token dropped therein will slide therealong by gravity; a lever controlling the operation of said vending machine; a slidable member slidable along said chute, and pins mounted on said slidable member and extending toward said chute from both sides there of, and means for causing said pins to move toward a token in said chute and to engage the edges of a milled edge token therein as said slidable member is advanced for advancing such milled edge token to operate said lever, said pins sliding over the edges of an unmilled edge token and thereby being inoperative to so advance such unmilled edge whereby any token not so advanced to actuate said lever becomes ejected along one path; and means whereby any token so advanced to operate said lever becomes ejected along a different path.
2. A token control, as for use in a vending machine, comprising: a chute positioned so that a token dropped therein will slide there along by gravity; a lever controlling the operation of said vending machine; a slidable member slidable along said chute, and pivotally mounted arms on said slidable member along both sides of said chute swinging toward said chute, cams on the rear ends of said arms for holding said arms in a position substantially parallel to said chute when said slidable member is retracted, springs for swinging the forward end of both arms toward said chute against the direction of the action of said cams as said slidable memher is advanced, pins mounted on the said forward ends of both of said arms extending toward said chute from both sides thereof for engaging the edges of a milled edge token in said forward end of said chute for advancing such milled edge token to operate said lever, said pins sliding over the edges of an unmilled edge token and thereby being inoperative to so advance such unmilled edge token to operate said lever; means whereby any token not so advanced to actuate said lever becomes ejected along one path; and means whereby any token so advanced to operate said lever becomes ejected along a different path.
3. A taken control, as for use in a vending machine, comprising: a chute positioned so that a token dropped therein will slide therealong by gravity; a lever controlling the operation of said vending machine; means for advancing a proper token to operate said lever inoperative to so advance an improper token; means whereby any token not so advanced to actuate said lever becomes ejected along one path; and a trap door at the forward end of said chute swinging downwardly, means carried by said token advancing means positioned to hold said trap door in closed position when said token advancing means is retracted and to permit said trap door to be swung open by gravity when said token advancing means is substantially completely advanced, whereby any token so advanced to operate said lever becomes ejected through said door and along a different path.

whereby any token not so advanced to operate said lever becomes ejected along one path; and a second trap door at the forward end of said chute also swinging downwardly,
means carried by said slidable member positioned to hold said second trap door in closed position when said slidable member is retracted and to permit said trap door to be swung open by gravity when'said slidable member is substantially completely advanced, whereby any token so advanced to operate said lever becomes ejected along a diiierent path.
9. A token control, as for use in a vending machine, comprising: a chute positioned so that a token dropped therein will slide therealong by gravity; a lever controlling the operation of said vending machine; means for advancing a proper token to operate said lever, inoperative to so advance an improper token; means whereby any token not so advanced to actuate said lever becomes ejected along a path leading to a place accessible to the operator of said token control; and means whereby any token so advanced to operate said lever b cor es ejected along a path leadinn: to a place inaccessible to the operator or" said token control.
10. A token control, as for use in a vending machine, comprising: a chute positioned so that a token dropped therein will slide therealong by gravity; a lever controlling the operation of said vending machine; a slidable member slidable along said chute, and pivotally mounted arms on said slidable member along both sides 01": said chute swinging toward said chute, cams on the rear ends of said arms for holding said arms in a position substantially parallel to said chute when said slidable member is retracted, springs acting on said arms to swing the forward ends of said arms toward said chute against the direction of the action of said cams as said slidable member is advanced, pins mounted on said forward ends of saidarms extending toward said chute from both sides thereof for engaging the edges of a milled edge token in said forward end of said chute for advancing such milled edge token to operate said lever, said pins sliding over the edges of an unmilled edge token and thereby being inoperative to so advance such unmilled edge token to operate said lever; a first trap door near the forward end ofsaidchute swinging downwardly, means carried by said slidable member positioned to hold said first trap door in closed position when said slidable member is retracted and to permit said trap door to be swung open by gravity when said slidable member is-substantially completely advanced, whereby any token not so advanced to operate said lever becomes ejected along a path leading to a place accessible to the operator of said token control; a second trap door at the iorward end of said chute also swinging downwardly, means carried by said slidable member positioned to hold said second trap door in a closed position when said slidable member is retracted and to permit said second trap door to be swung open by gravity when said slidable member is substantially completely advanced, whereby any token so advanced to operate said lever becomes ejected along a path leading to a place inaccessible to the operator of said token control; and biasing means for retracting said slidable member after each advancement thereof.
