. END GATE CONSTRUCTION Filed Feb. 11, 1928 Patented Dec. 24, 1929 PATENT oEFIcE GEORGE L. WACKEROW, OF MELLE'ITE, SOUTH DAKOTA END-GATE CONSTRUCTION Application led February 11, 1928. Serial No.- 253,585.
This invention relates to an end gate construction for a wagon. It is common to have wagon box bodies equipped with end gates either of the swinging type or of a type 5 adapted to be slid bodily from the end of the sides of the wagon body. Such box wagon bodies often have their sides spread apart by the load carried therein. 1t will readily be seen that there is a great pressure on the sides 10 of the Wagon body when fully loaded, especially if loaded with such material as grain. It -also often happens with certain end gate constructions that lthe sides are pushed apart when the end gate is inserted.
It is an object of this invention, therefore, to provide a simple and efficient end gate construction by means of which the sides of the wagon body are held in proper position and kept Vfrom spreading on account of the load 20 in saidv body.
Itis a further object of the invention to provide an end gate construction in which the end gate is slidable to position and has Amembers thereon engaging with members on 25 thesides ofthe` wagon body tohold the latter in proper position and prevent spreading thereof.
v It is an object of the invention to provide an end gate construction comprising an end gate having means thereon adapted to engage means on the wagon body to prevent spreading of-the sides thereof and also to engage Ameans on the sides of the body extension vadapted to be placed on top of said body.
It is more specifically an object of the invention to provide an end gate construction comprising a box wagon body having plate'- like members secured to the sides of said body having oset portions extending rearwardly andspaced slightly from the sides of said body, together with an endY gate having platelike Vmembers secured `thereto adjacent its ends adapted to be received between said iirstgmentioned members and the sides of LJ saidgbody, and means for holding said end gate in position. s n.
' jThese and other objects and advantages 'of 'the'invention will be fully set forth in the r Vfollowing description made Yin connection with the 'accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which`:-'
Fig. l'is a rear view of the wagon'body with the end gate in position; i
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2`2of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-8 of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows and shown L on an enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawings, a wagon body of the box type is shown, comprising the 'floor or bottom 5, and the side walls 6 extendingupwardly therefrom. A supporting member 7 extends beneath the bottom 5 adjacent the end thereof and is supported at its ends which project beyond the sides 6 by the brackets 8 bolted thereto and to the said sides. AnV extensionof the wagon box body 7 is shown in Fig. 1, which will comprise a rectangular box having the side walls 9, said box being of the same size as the wagon box so as to set directly on top of the same. Said sides are shown as being connected by the T- angle bars 1() secured by the bolts 11. The side walls 6'have secured to the inner sides thereof, adjacent their rear ends, the platelike members 12. These members have portions directly in contact with said sides and 51S bolted thereto by the spaced bolts 13. The members 12 also have the offset rear portions 12a extending parallel to and slightly spaced from the sides 6. The extension box members 9 also have platelikemembers 14 secured to the sides thereof adjacent their rear ends similar to the members 12 and having similar offset rear portions 1411.Y
An end gate 15 is provided, of the same height asthe sides 6 and of a length adapt-ed 9 and'down into the wagon box body. The
sides 6 have apertures 6n therethrough, in the rear of the end gate 15, and plates 17 are secured to the inner sides of said sides 6, having apertures alining with the apertures 6a. Angle plates 18 are secured to the rear side of the end gate 15, having rearwardly projecting flanges also provided with apertures alined with the apertures 6a. A plate 19 is secured to the rear side of end gate 15 substantially at the center thereof, centrally of which is pivoted the lever 20 having a flat portion extending parallel to said plate and having a handle portion of considerable length. The end of said handle portion of the lever 20 has inwardly and outwardly bent ends 20a and 2Gb respectively. The lever 2O has pivotally secured thereto vat equal distances from the pivot Q1 by which it is pivoted to plate 19, the rods 22 extending laterally in opposite directions and passing respectively through the apertures in plates 18.
In operation, when the end gate is in its operative position closing the end of the wagon body, it is disposed as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. At this time the inwardly projecting sides of the angle bars 16 pass within the space between portion 12EL ofthe plates 12 and the sides 6. It will thus be seen that the sides 6 are securely held in properly spaced relation and cannot be spread at their upper ends by any load that is carried in the wagon body. It will also be seen that if the sides should become spread somewhat when the end gate is removed, that they can be drawn together in proper position when the end gate is replaced. The flanges of the angles 16 lcan be engaged with the members 12a at their lower ends and said members will thus be drawn inward as the end gate is swung upward to its closed position. vWhen the end gate is in closed position. the lever 2O is swung as shown in Fig. l and thus projects the rods 22 through the plates 17 and into the apertures 621 in the sides 6. When the rods are in this position. it will be seen that the lever 2O passes slightly beyond dead center so that there is no tendency for the same to swing to position withdrawing the rods 22. The lever 20 can be positioned with the projection 20 extending above the rod 2Q. The said lever is thus rmly held in position with the end gate locked in place by the rods 22.
llVhen it is desired to remove the end gate, the lever 20 will be released and swung in al counter-clockwise direction to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1. when the rods 22 will be moved to the dotted line position shown in said figure` Said rods thus move out of engagement with sides 6 and plate 17 and the Yend gate Ican thus be withdrawn rearwardly.
From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided a very simple and very efficient construction of end gate and one which will prevent the objectionable spreading of the sides of the wagon body. Not only is the wagon body kept from spreading, but the members 12 and 16 on the end gate strengthen these parts and provide a very durable and rugged construction. The members 16 also preventvspreading of the sides of the extension box 9 and tend to hold this box in place. Such extension boxes are commonly used when threshed grain is being hauled. The present invention is very elficient in positioning such a box and prevents spreading ofthe sides thereof.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the novel parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
