The present invention is directed to improvements in machines for cutting gaskets, and more particularly from sheets of asbestos.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that a sheet of asbestos may be convenicntly placed in proper relationship with respect to a. pair of revolving cutters in order that a complete gasket will he quickly out.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that the sheet of material from which the gaskets are cut will be automatically fed during the cutting operation.
Another object of the invention to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, compactly arranged, durable, and one which can be manufactured at a small cost.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and ar rangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device, parts thereof being shown in elevation.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a top of a table having bolted to one end thereof upper and lower bearing sleeves 2 and 3 in which is journaled the driving shaft 4t. The upper sleeve 2 carries a bracket 5 having a bearing 6, said bearing receiving the shaft 4. This bracket has formed integral therewith a horizontally disposed tubular arm 7 to which is secured the lower end of the brace rod 8, the upper end of which is secured to the collar 9 rotatably engaged upon the extended end of the shaft 4.
Rotatable in the arm 7 is a shaft 10 to the rear end of which is fixed a bevel gear 11 which meshes with a similar gear 12 fixed to the lower end of the shaft 4:. A. Ushaped frame 13 is provided and has its arms 14:14t

provided with bearings 1515 adapted to slidably engage the shaft 10.
Slidably keyed to the shaft 10 is a bevel gear 16 which meshes with a similar gear 17 on the vertical shaft 18 journaled in the hearing 19 of the frame 13. The lower end of the shaft 18 has adjustably secured thereto a cutting disk 20, the purpose of which will be later explained.
Upper and lower brackets 21 and 22 are bolted to the table 1 and are provided with bearings 23 and 241, respectively, the former receiving the outer ends of the shaft 10. The bracket 21 has formed integral therewith a horizontal arm 25 in which is formed a lon gitudinal slot 26, there being a similar arm 27 carried by the bracket 22 which is also provided with a longitudinal slot 28. The arms 1d of the frame are adjustably secured to the arm 25 by bolts 29-29 in order that said frame may be fixed in adjusted position on the shaft 10.
The bearing sleeve 3 has a bracket 29 which is provided with the bearings 30 and 31, the former having journaled therein the inner end of the shaft 32, the outer end of which is journaled in the bearing 24. This shaft has fixed to its inner end a bevel gear 33 which meshes the similar gear 34 fixed to the lower end of the drive shaft 4.
A stub shaft 35 is journaled in the bearing 31 and has fixed to its outer end a relatively large bevel gear 36 which meshes with the gear 3 1, said shaft also havin fixed thereto a belt pulley 37 in order that power from a suitable source may be used for driving the device. A. detachable handle 38 may be secured to the gear 36 when it is desired to drive the device manually.
A frame 39 is provided, and has a head 40 l shaft 32. The arms have carried thereby bolts 4848 which engage in the longitudinal slot 28 of the arm 27, and like the bolts 29 serve to hold the frame 46 in adjusted position upon the shaft 32.
The shaft 42 extends through a slot 49 formed in the table 1 and has fixed to its upper end a cutting disk 50.
The table 1 has formed longitudinally therein a centrally disposed groove 51 in which is slidable a metallic block 52', said block having a socket 53 formed therein for receiving the lower end of the centering pin 54. This pin is carried by a sleeve 55 vertically adjustable on the angle arm 56 carried by the sleeve 57, said sleeve being slidably adjustable on the graduated portion of the arm 7, said sleeve being held in adjusted position by the set screw 58.
In operation a sheet 59 of asbestos is placed upon the table and the centering pin 54 passes therethrough for engagement with the socket 58 of the block. The cutting disk 20 is elevated and the sheet 59 is placed over the cutting disk 50, after which the cutter 20 is lowered so that its cutting edge will coact with the cutting edge of the cutter 50 during rotation of the disk. Obviously when the shafts 10 and 32 are driving the gears, one
cutting disk will rotate clockwise while the,
other will rotate counter clockwise, and since the sheet is engaged between the cutting edges of the disk the rotation of the disk will feed the sheet as the gasket is cut. As shown in Figure 2 the sheet 59 has been cut on the line A, after which the disks are adjusted to cut the sheet on the line B to complete the cutting operation.
It will be of course understood that gaskets of irregular form can be cut, and at which time the centering pin is disengaged from the block and the sheet moved manually to fol-- low irregular paths.
While the device is primarily designed for cutting gaskets from sheets of asbestos, it will be understood that it may be used with equal success for cutting material other than asbestos.
Since the frames 13 and 46 can be conveniently adjusted upon the respective shafts it will be apparent that the cutting disks can be moved to various points upon the table in order that gaskets of various sizes can be conveniently cut and sheets of asbestos varying in sizes may be conveniently handled.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, and proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the inventimi= What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described, comprising a table, shafts disposed above and below the table, a frame supported by each shaft, cutting disks rotatably supported by each frame, means for adjusting the frames longitudinally upon the shafts, and means for simultaneously rotating the shafts to rotate the cutting disks.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a table, a tubular arm supported above the table, a shaft rotatable in the arm, a second shaft rotatably supported below the table, a frame slidably adjustable upon each shaft, a cutting disk rotatably supported by each frame, geared connections between the shaft and cutting disks, and means for rotating the shafts in reverse directions to impart rotary movement through the geared connections to the cutting disks to rotate said disks in reverse direction.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a table, a pair of horizontally disposed rotatably mounted cutting disks disposed substantially in a horizontal plane with the upper surface of the table, means for adjusting the cutting disks toward or away from each other, and means for simultaneously rotating said disks in reverse directions.
4. A device of the class described comprising a table, a tubular arm supported above the table, a shaft rotatably mounted in the arm, a second shaft rotatably mounted below the table, a frame mounted upon each shaft, a rotary cutting disk carried by each frame, a pin adjustably connected with the tubular arm and adapted to engage the sheet to be out by the cutters, and means for simultaneously rotating the cutters in reverse direction.
5. A device of the class described comprising a table, a shaft journaled above the table, a second shaft journaled below the table, frames slidable on each shaft, rotary cutting disks carried by each frame, means for rotating the disks, arms associated with the shaft, and means carried by the arms and connecting the frames for holding the frames in adjusted position upon the shafts.
