Patented Dec. 24, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH 111. LUCARELLE, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO DICTAPH'ONE CORPORATION, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK oonnnc'rron nnvrcn Application filed March 2,
transcriber as a guide in transcribing the record. In making notations on this memo' randum sheet, it has been necessary for the dictator to first note the position of the pointer on the scale of the dictating machine,
' then locate the corresponding indication on the scale of the memorandum sheet, and then make proper notationson such memorandum sheet. in doing this, error is liable to occur since the dictator is required to make two separate readings from two separate places, thereby naturally increasing the possibility of error.
According to the present invention, the necessity of making two separate readings is eliminated, and this is accomplished by making it unnecessary for the, dictator to read either scale.
Many means and ways have been proposed to serve as correction means for dictating machines, and one of such meanswas to provide a narrow stand for holding a writing tablet very close and in front of the revolving wax cylinder. Such a method has proven to be disadvantageous due to the very limited amount of space for notation purposes as well as being so close to the revolving wax cylinder that the marking pencil might accidentally be brought against the cylinder, unless the dictator is extremely careful.
An object of the invention is to provide a large and conveniently located memorandum device with means for permitting the dictator to give the transcriber instructions regarding the work, without the mental effort and careful attention heretofore found necessary.
A feature of the invention is the provision of means which permits any necessary ad- 1927. Serial No. 172,037.
justments to be easily made so that the cor- ,rection device will always be accurate.-
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
The means at present preferred for accomplishing these results are shown in the accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a memorandum device in accordance with the present invention, showing but a portion of av dictating machine. 1
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a dictating machine showing the present invention applied thereto.
Fig. 3 is an endview of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. i is a vertical section taken through the indicator of the present invention on line H of Fig. 3.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the dictating machine 10 comprises a base 11 below which is a motor box 12 containing mechanism (not shown) for imparting rotation to the mandrel 13 which holds a record-blank (not shown) and for movingthe sound-box carriage 14 longitudinally of said mandrel.
Rising from the base is a pair of standards 15 between which extends back-space bar 17 and also a guide tube 18 along which the carriage travels axially of the mandrel upon suitable operations of a control lever 19. The carriage is prevented from rotating on said tube by means of a stabilizer arm 20 which straddles a rod 21 extending between said standards 15. The carriage may be freely moved by hand along said tube and rod 21 when the lever 19 is set in its neutral position shown in Fig. 3. The standards15 have forwardly projecting arms 16 carrying a scale 22 which extends across the machine to cooperate with a pointer or indicator 23 mounted on the carriage.
The mechanism above described, namely the dictating machine per se and the indicator pad shelf 32, are now well known in the art and consequently need no further detail description. Sufiice it to say that the pad 35 is made sufliciently large to take not only marks or abbreviated memoranda but also lot detail instructions when the dictator feels that this is necessary or'desirable. In use, this form of memorandum device has proven extremely advantageous for the above reasons, but it has had the disadvantage that it was necessary for the dictator to first note by reference to the scale 22 and pointer 23 on the carriage the position of the carriage with reference to the scale and carry that note mentally until the same place on the scale 36 of the indicator pad is found, and then to make a mark at that place on the indicator scale 36, all the while, of course, remembering what it was that he desired to communicate to the transcriber by the notation.
This disadvantage is obviated by the present invention by the provision of means on the relatively large scale pad 35 for indicating thereon the position of the carriage relative to the record and/or scale 22 without requiring any mental effort on the part of the dictator, yet the location and size of the indicator pad 35 is not changed, so that the advantages above referred to have been retained.
This is accomplished by the present invention by the provision of an indicator 37 Which is mounted on the shelf 32 or some adjacent part so as to move longitudinally of the scale 36 on the scale pad 35. In the form of the present invention herein shown, the
indicator 37 has upwardly extending ears 38 providedwith slots 39 for receiving a guide rod 40 having. its ends supported in brackets 41 and 42 carried by the shelf 32 and thus the I iridicator 37 may slide on the pad 35 guided by the rod 40.
For the purpose of moving the indicator 37 co-ordinately and simultaneously with the sound-box carriage 14,- the indicator 37 has provided between its upstanding cars 38 a member 43 having apertured ears 44 through which the guide rod 40 extends and a protruding arm 45 to which a transmission cord 46 is connected. The member 43 fits snugly between the upstanding 'ears 38 of the indicator 37, so as to accurately control the movement of the indicator, yet there is sufficient freedom to permit the indicator to move verticallyby reason of the slot 39 so as to engage by its own weight the top surface of the pad regardless of the reducing thickness thereof caused by the consumption of the pad sheet by sheet. The freedom between the indlcator 37 and the member 43 is also sufficient to permit the indicator 37 to be tilted carriage 14. However, as above stated, it is at present found preferable to utilize a transmission cord 46 for this purpose. This transmission cord 46 is preferably continuous, and
I after being led oversuitable guiding means,
1 and forwardly to a pulley 52 carried by the bracket 41 at the forward end of the shelf 32, then backwardly and upwardly over a pulley 53 also carried .by the bracket 42, then upwardly over a pulley 54 and from the pulley 54 back to the link 48. With this arrangement, when the sound-box carriage 14 moves from left to right, as it usually does in makinga record, the indicator 37 will be moved from'the back toward the front of the machine along the scale pad 35. Since there are no motion-reducing or increasing devices in the transmission, the movement of the indicator 37 will be the same relatively to the scale pad as the movement ofthe sound-box carriage 14 is with respect to the record.
In order to maintain the transmission cord taut to accommodate for slackening or tight ening thereof due to atmospheric changes or extensive use, and also to permit the base 11 to be swung relative to the motor box 12 on its hinge 55 without breaking or straining the transmission cord 46, the pulleys 50 and 54 are mounted in an arm 56 pivoted on a screw 57 mounted in the back-space bar 17 The arm 56 has an upstanding car'58 connected to a spring 59 whose other end is connected to an arm 60 which is supported upon the back space bar in any desired manner. Hence the tendency is for the end of the arm 56 which carries the pulleys 50 and 54 to swing upwardly and this takes up slack and yields under tension, thereby holding the transmission cord 46 taut under all conditions.- p
Sincethe marked sheet of the indication pad 35 is to be used in connection with another machine such as a transcribing machine which may have a. similar indicator or merely a scale and po1nter, 1t is customary that the transcribing machine and dictating machine both have their scales coordinated. That is to say, when the scales are so arranged that by on the scale of the first machine when the record was on the first machine. Hence, it is extremely important that the indicator 37 be coordinated with the scale 22 and point 23 of the machine. For this purpose, the link 48 is not permanently and unalterably secured to the sound-box carriage 14:, but is merely clamped thereto in any suitable manner, as by the fiatheaded screw 61, which passes througha slot 62 formed in said link and extending longitudinally thereof. When it is desired to adjust the indicator 37 with regard to the scale pad and with respect of the scale 22 and pointer 23, the screw 61 is loosened and the indicator 37 is moved to a position on the scale 36 which accurately corresponds with the position of the pointer 23,011 the scale 22. Then, Without further adjustment, the screw (31 is tightened to firmly lock the link 48 to the carriage 14.
Other forms of adjusting or coordinating mechanisms may, of course, be provided Within the scope of this invention.
lt should be noted, that the indicator 37 does not actually provide a surface against which a pencil is held to make a mark, but instead is merely provided with arrows 63 which indicate the position on the scales 86 which should be marked by a pencil. The indicator 37 is made unsuitable for pencil guiding purposes, because it has been found that when a pencil is brought against the surface of the.
indicator 37 the position of the latter might be shifted substantially due to the pressure of the pencil thereagainst and hence the indication would not be at the proper place.
Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of this invention and portions of the improvements may be used with out others.
Having now described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to obtain LettersPatent, is z- 1'.
