@n my 4Patented Dec. 17, 1929 CHAUNCEY MARSH GOODRICH, OF WINDSOR, ONTARIO, CANADA TOWER ARM Application led March 20, 1929. Serial Nall-348,529.
This invention relates to transmission towers and more particularly to swinging arms for said towers, and has t'or its object the provision oi. arms of this type which are free to swing in a horizontal direction parallel with the line.
Another object is to provide a tower arm ot this class which will be light in weight, cheap to manufacture and ot' durable construction.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of a tower having the novel arm construction of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line II-II of Figure l.
Figure 3 is an enlarged elevation of the upper end of the tower showing the construction ot the arm and its mounting in detail.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the legs of the tower which is of the usual skeleton construction. The legs 2 are connected by bracing S in the usual manner.
A triangular head member A is provided on the upper end of the tower to support the cable carrying arm B. The head A is composed of channel sections 4 which are secured to and extend upwardly from the upper ends of the legs 2. The channel sections 4 extend upwardly parallel with the legs 2 for a short distance and are then bent over toward each other in a direction parallel with the line un til their upper ends meet. Connecting plates 5 are secured between the upper ends of the channel members 4 and an angle tie bar 6 is secured to said plates. Mounting plates 7 are secured to the channels 4 on the'sides whose planes arl parallel with the line.
Hanger bars 8 are pivotally connected to the plates 7 by bolts 9 and depend therefrom so as to swing in a direction parallel with the line.
A- horizontal cable supporting beam 10, composed of a pair of angles secured together back to back, is secured to the lower endsy of the hanger bars 8 and extends through the tower head A and beyond each side thereof, Suitable bracing bars 12 extend from adjacent the upper end ofthe hanger bars 8 to adjacent the outer ends ot the beam 10. The
hangers 8, beam 10 and bracing bars 12 form the cable carrying arm B which is free to swing in the direction ont' the line.
Suitable stop and guide lugs llt are secured to the under face ot the beam 10 slightly beyond the sides of the tower and are adapted to engage tower horizontal bracing members l5 to limit and prevent the swinging or" the arm B transversely of the line and to guide the arm during its swinging movement in the direction of the line. n
Suitable insulator hangers 16 are suspended trom the arm B at points adjacent each end of the beam l0 to support the transmission line cables. Other insulator hangers 17 may be suspended from each of the plates 5 and have their lower ends connected to gether to form accntral support within the tower head A tor another cable if desired.
By providing the swinging arm B, it undue load is applied to one side ot the arm due to ice or snow collecting on the cable, the arm is tree to swing and reduce the strain on the cables. It one or both oit the cables break, the arm will also swing so as to reduce the strain on the unbroken cables.
lVhile l `have 'shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention'it'will be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto, since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, as deined in the appended claims.
I claiml. The combination with a transmission tower, ci." an arm construction comprising a beam member extending through the tower and beyond each side thereof in a direction transverse to the line, a pair of spaced hanger bars hingedly connected to said tower and connected to said beam to form a floating support for said beam so that said beam is free to swing horizontally in a direction parallel with the line, and means for preventing the swinging of said beam in a direction transverse of the line.
2. rfhe combination with a transmission tower, of an arm construction comprising a beam member extending through the tower and beyond each side thereof in a direction EGG transverse to the line, a pair of spaced hanger bars hingedly connected to said tower and connected to said beam to form a floating sup port for said'beam so that said beam'is free to swing horizontally in a direction parallel with the line, diagonal truss bars extending from adjacent the r'eeen'dsV o-said beamto said hangers', and means iorprev'enting the swinging of said beam in a directiontrana verse of the line,
3. The combination with a transmission tower, of an arm construction comprising la rigid beam member composed ofa pair of angles secured together back to back, said' beam extending through the tower and beyor'id` each side' thereof` in direction transverse to theline, a pairoi spac'edln'mgef'bars' hingedly connected to said tower' and: oonnected tosaidbeam tofoim a'lioa'ti'ng Vsupport for said beamv so'1 that said beam is free to swing horizontally in direction parallelv with thefline, diagonal truss bars extending froml adjacent the" free' ends of said l'iealrnv to said hangers, andmeans ioi preventing the swi'finging of Said beam a direction trans4 verse oi the line. n 4. The" combination with a transmission tower, of an arm construction' comprising' a beam member extendingthrough the tower and beyond each side thereof in a direction transverse to theline, a pair of spaced hanger bars hingedly connect-ed to said tower and connected to said beam to form a floating support for said beam so that said be'ain is free t'oswing` V4 horizont-ally in a direction parallel with the line, stop lugs on s'a-id y beam and adapted to engager said tower to guidel said beam and prevent the s'win'gingof said beam in a direction transverse ot the line.V
In testimonyI whereof', I have hereunto set my hand. L p Y n p n CHUNCEY MARSH GOODRIGH.
