Another object of my invention is to yprovide Van integral side fra-me -formed with a bolster opening receiving-bolster springs, said springs supporting a spring cap and a bolster supported on said cap, said ,cap being formed with column engaging flanges or guides and the bolster interlocked with respect thereto whereby said bolster may be free from column engaging ianges. 4
A further object of my invention is to provide a railway truck formed with side frames having bolster guide columns connecting intermediate portions of the tension and compression members thereof, springs suppolted on said side frames between said guide columns, spring caps supported on said springs, and a bolster supported on said spring caps and connecting said frames, said bolster being formed to interlock with said spring caps longitudinally and transversely and adapted to rock thereon for increasing the iexibility of the truck.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a built-up bolster formed with compression and tension members and end castings connected at the ends of said members by commonV rivets extending 'there' through, said end castings being shaped to either interlock with the associated side frames or with-the spring caps thereof and when interlocked with said spring caps being preferably formed to permit rocking be tween said parts. f
Other objects and advantages of the invention relating to the particular arrangement and construction of the parts will become apparent as the description proceeds.

, Referring to the drawings in detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters, and first considering the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, there is shown a portion of a truck comprising a side frame 1 formed with a compression member 2, a tension member 3. and bolster guideV columns 4 spacingintermediate portions thereof and spaced to leave a window opening 5 therebetween. In the present embodiment, the side frame illustrated is of the type described and claimed in my Patent No. 1,652,808 of December 13, 1927, on a car truck; but it is obvious that I do not wish to be limited to the embodiment of my invention with such a type of frame, the showing being merely preferred but not limiting.
As more fully described in my prior patent, the side frame 1 involves auxiliary tension members 6, which cut across the lower corners 0f the window or bolster opening 5 and form upwardly extending convolutions which strengthen the frame and serve for interlocking the spring plank 7 with respect thereto, said spring plank being forthat purpose providedv with corresponding upwardly extending convolutions or corrugations 8. Resting on said spring plank are a plurality of bolster springs 9, said springs being preferably arranged as disclosed in my above referred to patent, and provided with spring plates 10 and 11, although I do not wish to be limited to' such specific disclosure of the springs. Resting on the tops of the springs or top spring plate 11 is a spring cap 12 preferably provided with outwardly extending flanges 13 and 14, the inner flanges 14 being reduced in height to facilitate insertion and withdrawal of said cap through the widened por-v tion of the window opening immediately above the auxiliary tension portions 6,'said flanges 13 and 14 extending outwardly and embracing the adjacent portions of the bolster guide columns 4 where the same extend closer together in the upper portion of the windowopening.
The lower surface of the spring cap 12 is i preferably generally flat but provided with depending peripheral flanges 15 which are adapted to embrace the tops of the springs 9 and assist in maintaining them in desired position. The upper surface of the base or lower web 16 of the spring cap. is preferably generally curved convexly upward to permit rocking or rolling beween said`cap and the associated bolster 17, although as an alternative the engaging surface of the bolster may be curved and the upper surface of, the web 16 of the spring cap fiat or of less curvature than that of the bolster.
In the embodiment illustrated the guiding ianges 13 and 14 are connected by side walls 18 which extend around the end of the bolster and serve as a limit stop therefor in the front ofthe cap but are omitted at the rear of the cap to prevent interference with said bolster,
` thereby'providing a depressed ,seat for the bolster on top of the web 16. For preventing longitudinal displacement of the bolstery on the spring cap the u per surface of the web 16 thereof is preferab standing tooth or boss 19 and the lower surface of the bolster correspondingly pocketed as indicated at 20, for receiving said tooth 19. In order to interlock the bolster with respect to the side frames, only one of which is illustrated, the ends thereof are provided with downwardly opening depressions or pockets 21 receiving a corresponding rib or boss 22 von each spring cap. On account of this construction the bolster 17 is interlocked with respect to the spring cap 12 both longitudinally and transversely, and as said cap is likewise interlocked with respect to the `frame said bolster is properly interlocked with respect to the side frame without being pro vided with the usual guiding flanges for directly engaging the guide columns of the frame.
In the present embodiment, the bolster illustrated comprising an angular or channel' shaped compression member 23 spaced from i a tension member 24, which is preferably flat, at intermediate portions thereof in any usual vor desired manner, not shown, with the ends of said members connected by having the ends of the tension member extending between the depending flanges 25 of the compression member and seated on the under surface of the web 26 thereof, said web preferably being bent upwardly to aline it with the inclined ends of the tension member 24. `The by common rivets 29 extending through the web of the compression member, the tension member and the adjacentweb of the end casting. Although only one end of the bolster is illustrated it is obvious that the other end is preferably formed to correspond and is similarly connected to the other associated side frame and supported parts.- In order to firmly connect the end castings 28 to the beam portions of the bolster not only are the common( rivets through the compression, tension and end casting portions, but said endl castings' are preferably formed with dependingvflanges 30 which lie along the inner sides of the flanges 25 of the compression member 23 and are connected thereto by rivets 3-1. On account of this construction the parts of the bolster are very firmlyv secured together to give a structure which 'is comparable to a cast bolster such as will now be described. i

As in the previous embodiment, sufficient clearance is provided between the top of the rib Q2 and the top wall of the pocket 21a to permit the desired vertical rocking between the vbolster and spring cap, but as distinguished from the first embodiment, the rib 22 preferablyflares or is inclined outwardly and upwardly toward the sides of the spring Icap whereby the average height thereof is considerably increased as distinguished from the first embodiment in which there is only a very Icasting on the built up bolster 17 is less than the depth of the bolster 17f. which, in the present embodiment, is of integral cast conv struction. A further difference, that will be noted in the'present embodiment, is that the rib 22a and the corresponding pocket 21a is approximately axially disposed with respect to the associated side frame, whereas in the first embodiment it was offset outwardly v thereof on account of the tapering character ofthe end casting 28 in order to be positioned in a `portion of said end casting of sufficient height. Except as specifically described in connection with the present embodiment the same may correspond substantially with that of the first embodiment. i
From "the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have devised aI railway truck which provides for rocking between the side frames thereof and the associated bolster by proi-'idii'ig a spring cap associated with said side frames, the upper surface of which is so formed and. interlocked with re-l spect to the lower surface of the associated bolster that relative angling therebetween in vertical longitudinal planes is permitted.
.The bolster employed may be either one of the built up type, as illustrated in the first embodiment, or of integral cast construction,
as illustrated in the second embodiment, and
is preferably though not necessarily interlocked w'ith respect, to the side frame indirectly through the associated spring cap, having notches or pockets in the lower portions of the ends thereof engaging corresponding ribs or bosses extending both longitudinally and A,transversely whereby said bolster is locked in both directions with respect to said cap; In order to permit the desired rocking between the bolster and the associated caps at either end thereof, the necessary amount of clearance is provided between the tops of the longitudinal ribs on the spring caps and the top walls of the corresponding pockets in the bolster. In order to facilitate insertion and removal ofthe"spring""ca,ps the columnengaging fianges thereof at one side of the frame, preferably wthe inner side, are formed shorter than those on the other side auxiliary truss or tension portions of'a double truss side frame such as disclosed in my Patent No. 1,652,808, previously referred to.
Although I have described and'claimed a bolsterof the Huntoon or built-up type in combination with devices for permitting longitudinal rocking in vertical planes between said bolster and the side frames, itis obvious that I do not wish to belimited to such con'-l struction, as, if desired, such a bolster may be used, not only with devices permitting rocking, but also with devicespermitting lateral motion of the bolster with'respect to said side frames, or with such lateral motion devices without the rocking feature, suchas described and .claimed in my companion application Serial No. 256,332, filed February 23,1928.
Having now described my invention, ll claim l. A railway truck having side frames and a bolster connect-ing said frames, said bolster ported in said bolster opening, a` spring cap supported on said springs and 'interlocked with respect to said frame, and a bolster resting on said spring cap, the engaging surfaces of said bolster and cap permitting relative rolling between said members in vertical longitudinal planes.

A railway truck having side frames formed with bolster openings, bolster springs in said openings, springs caps supported on said springs and formed with interlocking flanges engaging theI fra-mes at the sides of said openings, a bolster supportedy on said spring caps and interlocked to limit transverse movement therebetween, the engaging surfaces between said bolster and spring caps being formed to permit longitudinal rocking between the parts.l

I spring caps supported on said springs, said spring caps having upstanding side portions interlocked with respect to the guide columns, a bolster supported on said spring caps between said side portions,'said bolster being formed with notches in the engaging surfaces for receiving corresponding projections on said spring caps for interlocking said bolster yand spring caps longitudinally and transversely, some of the engaging surfaces between said bolster and spring caps being curved to permit relative rocking'therebetween.
5. In a railway truck, a side frame formed with compression and tension members, bolster guide columns connecting intermediate portions ofsaid members, bolster springs supported by m'eans of said tension member lbetween said bolster guide columns, a spring cap supported on said springs, said spring cap )being formed with flanges interlocking with said bolster guide columns for retaining said cap .in place, the flanges on one side of said frame being shorter than those on the other to permit ready insertion or withdrawal of said spring cap, and a bolster supported on said spring cap and interlocked with respect thereto.
6. lin a car truck, in combination, a side frame comprising a compression member, a tension member, bolster guide columns interposed therebetween and spaced to leave a window opening, the construction adjacent the junctions between the bolster guide columns and tension member being reinforced by auxiliary diagonal 'tension members which cut across thelower corners of the bolster opening, bolster springs supported by means of said tension member, a spring cap supportedon said bolster springs and formed with flanges embracing the adjacent portions of the bolster guide columns for retaining said cap in place, said anges disposed inwardly of said frame being reduced in height to facilitate insertion and withdrawal over the auxiliary diagonal tension members, and a bolster` supported on said spring cap and interlocked vwith respect thereto.

a tension member riveted thereto and eXtendy ing therebeneath, and cast end pieces connected adjacent the vends of said compression and tension member with their under surfaces formed to permit relative rocking of said frames in longitudinal upright planes.

A railway truck formed with side frames and a bolster connecting said frames and received atits ends lin bolster openings therein, said bolster being formed with a compression member, a tension member, ,castend pieces and common rivets extending through said end pieces, compression and tension members, the lower surfaces of said end pieces being notched for interlocking said bolster with respect to the associated parts of side frames. i

A railway truck having side frames each formed with a bolster opening, springs sup` ported in said bolster opening, a spring cap supported on said springs and interlocked ing an angular compression member and a flat tension member, the ends of said compresslon and tension members being riveted together with respect to said frame, and a bolster rest j ing on said spring cap, said bolster comprisand to end castings, each end casting resting L.
on a spring cap, the engaging surfaces of said end casting and cap permitting relative rocking between said frames and bolster in vertical planes.
10. A railway truck having side frames formed with bolster openings, bolster springs in said openings, springs caps supported on said springs and formed with interlocking ianges engaging the frames at thesides of said openings, a bolster supported on said spring caps and comprising end castings interlocke'd with said caps to limit transverse movement therebetween, and compression and tension members connecting said end castings and connected together at their ends,

In a railway truck, a side frame formed with compression and tension members, bolster guide columns connecting intermediate portions of said members, springs supported by means of said tension members between the bolster guide columns, a spring cap supported on said springs andl formed with flanges interlocked with said bolster guide columns for retaining said cap in place, the

In a railway truck, in combination a side frame comprising a compression member, a tension member, bolster guide columns interposed therebetween and spaced to leave a window opening, the construction adjacent the bolster guide columns and tension member being reinforced by auxiliary diagonal tension members which cut across the lower corners of the bolster opening, a'spring plank resting on said tension member beneath the bolster opening and inter-locked with respect to said auxiliary tension members, spring means supported on said spring plank, a. spring cap supported on said spring means and formed with anges embracing the adjacent portions of the bolster guide coli umns for retaining said cap in place, said anges disposed inwardly thereof being reduced' in height to facilitate insertion and withdrawal over the auxiliary tension members, and a bolster formed with an end casting supported on said spring cap and interlocked with respect thereto.

A railway truck having a side frame formed with a bolster opening, a spring plank supported in said opening, bolster springs supported on said spring plank, a spring cap supported on said springs and formed with interlocking flanges engaging the frame at the sides of said opening, a bolster supported on said spring cap and interlocked with respect thereto to limit transverse movement thereof, the engaging surface between said bolster and spring cap being shaped to permit longitudinal rocking between `the parts.
15. A railway truck having a side frame formed with compression and tension members, bolster guide columns connecting intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and spaced to leave a bolster opening, a spring plank supported on said tension member beneath the bolster opening, bolster springs supported on saidl spring plank, a spring cap supported on said springs and interlocked with respect to the 'guide columns, a bolster supported on said cap and formed with notches in the engaging surface for receiving corresponding projections onsaid cap for interlocking said bolster and cap longitudinally and transversely, one of the engaging surfaces between said bolster and cap being curved to permit relative rollingtherebetween.
16. A built up bolster comprising an angular compression member,- a flat tension member and en d castings, said compression and tensionl members being connected together and to the end castings by common rivets, said end castings being formed with their under surfaces notched for interlocking with associated side frames.
17. A bolster formed with notches in the lower surfaces of the ends thereof adapted to interlock with associated spring caps, said notches extending longitudinally and trans'- versely for interlocking said bolster in both directions and formed of approximately the same depth at the point of intersection.
18. A built-up,A bolster comprising a channel compression member, a Hat tension member, the ends of said tension member being received against the web of the channel member and'between the flanges thereof, and end castings, said compression and tension mem'- bers andpend castings being connected t0- gether by common rivets passing through the web of the compression member, said end castings having L, their under surfaces formed with intersecting notches for interlocking said bolster both longitudinally and transversely with respect to associated side frames.
