DEVICE FOR ELIMINATING THE PRINTING OF IMPRESfiIONs ON IMPRESSION CYLINDER PA CKINGS Filed Oct. 26. 1928 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 INVENTOR %MVM ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HOWARD M. BARBER, OF PAWCATUCK, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO C. B. 'COTTRELL & SONS COMPANY, OF WESTERLY, RHODE ISLAND, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE DEVICE FOR ELIMINATING THE PRINTING OF IMPRESSIONS ON IMPRESSION-CYLINDER PACKINGS Application filed October 26, 1928.
One feature of my invention is directed to an improvement in the means for automatically causing the impression cylinder of a rotary printing press to retain the sheet thereon beyond its point of delivery, upon the failure of the sheet feeder to feed a succeeding sheet, thus causing the sheet on the impression cylinder to receive a second impression as it is carried through the press and thereby protect the impression cylinder packing from-receiving said last named impression.
Another feature of my invention consists in means for automatically holding the feeding cylinder grippers closed at their point of transfer to the impression cylinder grippers whenever the sheet on the. impression cylinder is carried a second timethrough the press because of the failure of the sheet feeder to present a sheet to the feeding cylinder grippers, thereby preventing the feeding cylinder grippers from tearing or otherwise mutilating the leading edge of the sheet carried by the impression cylinder grippers as it passes by the transfer point and thus preventing the sheet from being properly transferred to the delivery cylinder grippers on the resumption of the operation of the press.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents in detail side elevation so much of a rotary printing press as well give a clear understanding of my invention, the parts being in their normal operating positions.
Fig. 2 represents a similar view with the parts in the positions they assume when the feeder has failed to feed a sheet to the feed ing cylinder.
Fig. 3 represents a fragmentary view showing the feeding cylinder grippers closed instead of open as they pass the transfer-point to the impression cylinder grippers.
Fig. 4 represents a detail end elevation of the parts in the positions shown in Fig. 1.
The impression cylinder of the rotary printing press is denoted by 1,. its shaft by 2 and its grippers by 3. The sheet feeding cylinder is denoted by 4;, its shaft by 5 and itstgripplers by 6- The sheet delivery cyl- Serial no. 315,304.
inder is denoted by 7, its shaft by t5 and its grippers by 9.
A cam 10 is pivoted at 11 so it may be swung radially out of its normal operative position in the path of the spring pressed gripper operating lever 12 for controlling the operation of the impression cylinder grippers 3, both at their transfer or receiving point from the sheet feeding cylinder grippers 6 and also at their transfer or delivery point to the delivery cylinder grippers 9. p
A cam 13 is pivoted at 14; so it may be swung radially out of its normal operative position in the path of the spring pressed gripper operating lever 15 for controlling the operation of the delivery cylinder grippers 9 at their transfer or receiving point from the impression cylinder grippers 3.
These radially movable gripper controlling cams 10 and 13 are connected through the two armed rock lever 16, 17 and rods 18, 19, to move together into and out of their operative positions.
The spring pressed tumbler cam 20, carried by the grippers 6 of the sheet feeding cylinder 4 is operated by the usual tumbler operating pin 21 to close the grippers on a sheet as it is fed in by an automatic sheet feeder of any well known or approved form, the fragments which are shown in the accompanying drawings being denoted by 22. This tumbler cam is normally operated at the transfer point from the feeding cylinder to the impression cylinder by an endwise movable tumbler operating pin 23 to open the feeding cylinder grippers 6 for permitting the sheet to be transferred therefrom to the impression cylinder grippers 3. The grippers 6 normally remain open until they are again closed on the next succeeding sheet fed from the feeder.
A second endiwse movable tumbler operating pin 2 1 is arranged in position to be moved intothe path of the tumbler cam 20 as the pin 23 is moved out of the said path in the case where the feeder has failed to present a sheet to the feeding cylinder. thereby holding the grippers closed until they have passed their transfer point to the impression cylinder g pp The dev ce f r m v g pins 23, 24 endwise simultaneously in opposite directions comprises a pin controlling cam lever pivoted at 25 and having acam 26 engaging the pin 23 and a second cam 27 engagingthe pin 24 the cams being soinclined that as one of the pins is Withdrawn from the path "of the tumbler cam 20, the other pin will be projected into said path. This pin cont-rolling cam lever is operated by and from the impression cylinder gripper controlling cam 10, hereinbefore described, through a connecting rod 28 secnred at one end to an arm 29 of the pin controlling lever and at its other end to the cam 10 at the point 30. W The means which I have shown for controlling theoperat-ion of the feeding, impression a'iid deli'yery cylinder grippers is asfollows A two armed cam controlling'leyer 3-1, 82 any, the rock Sim-a has as arinbl connected by a swingi g link to the cam '10, to form ti tqgglejtjillt COflliQtlQli there With. Tlieot lier 32 of le ver not ii'ially engaged by one arm 35 of alatch lever pivoted at 36, the other arm 87 of which lever is connected by arod 3 S to the rocking arm 39 of an automatic throw-off mechanism of any well known or roved form, operating in the usual manner to stop' the feeder and press when the feeder fails to present a sheet to the feeding cylinder,
A spring 40 tends to hold the latch lever in position to engage the arm 32 of the cam controlling lever and aspi-in'g 4;1 exerts pressure on the arm 31 of the cam controlling lever for breaking the toggle joint connection between it and the cam 19 when the latch lever is releasedby the operation of the throWoff mechanism for sivingi 'i'g the interconnected cams 10 and 13 radially out of their normal operative positions. A handle 42, carried by the shaft gdmay be used for resetting the cam controlling lever.
In operation :lVhen, froi'n any cause thefeeder fails to present a sheet to the sheet feeding cylinder the automatic throw-off mechanism is operated in the usual manner to stop the feeder and press, The rockin of the arm 39ofthe throw-off mechanism Will cause the lat ch lever to rock and "swing arm 35 out ofeijigagemen't with the 3.!11132 of "the cam controlling 1ever, ;the1r eby perinit'ting the "spring 41 to break the toggle joint connection between the cam controlling lever cam 1Q and canfse thec'ain 10 and connected caln swing radially out of their normal operative pos tions in the Pat of. e impre ion .an jide iv i cy inder vg pper leve s-12 t s a o in t e mp s n a d l y cyl ndegrippers to n closed as they pa'ss their I tai'nfth' sheet on the cylinder and I) sent it in f te'c't tlie impr ping and thereby inder blanket from receiving such impression. At the same time the movement of the impression cylinder gripper controlling cam 10 Will move the tumbler pin controlling lever to cause it to move the tumbler pin 23- endrvise out of the path of the feeding cylinder gripper tumbler cam 20 and the tumbler pin 24 endwise into the said path so that the feeding cylinder grippers will not be opened until they have passed their transfer ointto the impression cylinder grippers, tilier'eby protecting the advance edge of the sheet'held on the impression cylinder from becoming so torn or otherwise mutilated as to prevent it from being subsequently transferred properly to the delivery cylinder grippers When the press is a ain started.
It is evident that various hanges may be resorted to in the construction form and arrangement of p the several departing fro mth e spirit an scope of my invention hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shotvn and described, but
