Description
A. W. MoRToN,
GAS-STOVE.
N. PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
I 365275605659 jb@ ya A UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
. ALBANUs w. MoEToN, or EAHWAY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-STQVES.'
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,985, dated February'22, 1876; application filed January 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALBANUs W. MoRToN, of Rahway, in the county of Union and State of N ew Jersey, have invented a newr and useful Improvement in Gras-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of gasstoves designed more particularly for heating apartments in dwellings. It consists in a novel construction and arrangement of iiues and a heating-drum, said ilues and heating-drum being arranged in relation with an annular burner, whereby a constant circulation of the air, in an apartment heated by said stove, is
. maintained through said drum and ues, and
'interior of the lower part of the shell S' are riveted or otherwise attached brackets bz, up- 011 which the annulus a, attached to the lower edge of the outer wall w1 of the drum D,rests, the entire drum D being supported by the said brackets bz. The said drum D consists of the walls w, w1, and wz. The interior wall w is conoid or pyramidal in form, the conoid form being preferred. The upper edge of the said wall w is joined, by riveting or other suitable means, to the upper edge of the .wall w1, and it is provided with openings near the top, as shown at o, which allows air to pass freely through them. The bottom wall wz is united to the bottom edge of the wall w by riveting or other suitable means. The wallsw -and w1 inclose the ascending annular flue f,
contracted toward the top, and the wall w1 and the shell S inclose the descending annular ue f1. This descending flue fl communicates with the external air through openings 0, arranged either in one group at the bottom, or at intervals around the bottom of the shell S', a greater or less number of openings being used, according to the size of the stove. out to leave an ample and free ingress for the air to be heated when the stove is in operation. v
I prefer to place in the shell S the deflector or chute, which extends backward and upward, as shown in Fig. 2, and which directs the entering air upward, and I also prefer to make the front side of said chute or deiiector polished, to reliect cheerful light and heat into the apartment, as indicated by rays r; but said chute or deiiector forms no part of my invention.
Gas is admitted through a suitable pipe, P, which leads to an annular burner, b, said annular burner b being provided with apertures, preferably on the outer side, to permit the escape of the gas in an outward direction. This annular burner is concentric with the drum D, and has about the `same circumference as the bottom w2 ot' the drum D. It is supported by the pipe p, of which it, preferably, forms a continuation.
Upon the top of the shell S is either formed, or, being separately formed, is supported, a cornice, c, forming a support for the upper wall of the line f1, the space in which Hue is continuous with the space iuclosed by the drum-walls w and wz. rIhe said cover. C, when placed in position, as shown in Fig. l, forms the top wall of the flue f1, and it renders the chamber inclosed by the drum-walls w, w1, and wz available for heating articles needed in nurseries and sick-rooms, said articles being rested uponthe bottom wall wz of the drum D.
When the gas flows through the pipe P,and is lighted at the burner b, the ame jets outward into the air at the bottom of the iiue f. The air, being heated, rises, by virtue of its diminished specilic gravity, and passes into the flue f, thence it issues through the aperture o into the heated space inclosed between the walls w and wz; but as it cannot descend into this space it passes upward, and is deiiected by the cover Cinto the annular flue fz, down which it is pressed by the air behind it The front part of the shell S is cut y till, being intercepted by the annulus a, it issues heated into the apartment. I claiml. The drum D7 consisting of external and internal Walls w1 and w, inclosing. an upwardly-contracted ascending line, f, with openings o at the top for the passage of heated air, in combination with the external descending flue f1, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the drum D and the ascending fine f, of the annular burner b, arranged conoentrically With said drum and flue, substantially as described.
3. The cover C, forming the upper wall of the flue f1,in combination with the drum D and the outer shell S', substantially as described.
