This invention relates to improvements in pulley constructions,and has more particular reference with respect to an improved sheave block and head. p
The primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved sheave block or head adapted to be used upon masts, or other locations, in connection with oil well operating apparatus, and including improved means for compactly assembling a pulley or sheave in a detachable relation in a housing, which is connected in a novel relation so as to permit access to all parts.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved sheave block or housing, having means cooperating in a detachable relation with a sheave or pulley to insure that the cable will be retained upon the sheave or pulley in an eflicient relation.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved sheave block or head which is used in a novel relation upon a mast, derrick construction, or in connection with a swivel attachment.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description. I

The pulley or sheave B preferably includes a hub portion 15 having axially projecting shaft extensions 16 and 17 at opposite sides thereof. The pulley has a rim 18 connected by a web or spokes 19 with hub 15. This rim has-a'cable' receiving groove 20 with opposite sides 21 diverging towards the outer peripheral edges of the pulley B.
The housing C is of novel construction, including the interchangeable and complementary plates or sections 25 and 26, each of which includes a hub portion 27, which at the inner side of the disc is provided with a socket 29 for receiving details of anti'-friction, preferably ball bearing rings to be subsequently described.
Each of the housing sections 25' and 26 adjacent the outer periphery thereof has a laterally extending annular vflange35,the inner periphery 36 of which is adapted to Figure 11 1s a vlew showing the attachoverlie the outer periphery at one side of the pulley or sheave B, it being noted from Figure 2 of the drawings that each flange 35 has a sloping or convex surface 37 which lies contiguous with the side surface 21 of the pulley wheel, when the latter is placed between the sections of the housing; the surfaces 37 of the sections 25 and 26 being divergent away from the pulley, as-is illustrated in Figure 2 all of which tends to seat and maintain the cable of the pulley in position. The sections 25 and 26 are of platelike metal formation, and thereon are each provided with an attaching lug 40, apertured at 41, and radially extending from the flange 35. Diametrically opposed from the attaching lug 40, each housing section 25 and 26 is provided with a radially extending half-cylindrical shaped attaching portion 42, having a flat face 43 at the inside thereof, con tiguous with the plane of the inside surface of the flange 35; each flat face 43 having a recess 44 therein, and the half-sleeve like member portion 42 at the lower end thereof being provided with a preferably 180 segment flange 45 provided with a recess 46 aligning with the recess 44, and which is shallower than therecess 44. At the outer surface the portion 42 is provided with screw threads 47.
In assemblage, the sheave B is placed between the sections 25 and 26, with the opposed shaft extensions 16 and 17 axially extending into the sockets 29 at the insides of the sections 25 and 26; the anti-friction devices 30 being placed between the extensions 16 and 17 and the inner peripheries of the flanges 28 of the sections 25 and 26. The anti-friction devices 30. preferably consist of inner and outer races with ball bearings therebetween; the inner races being adapted to bear on the shafts 16 and 17 and the outer races in engagement against the inner peripheries of the flanges 28, as illustrated in Figure 2. The hub portion 15 at the sides thereof preferably lies in close conformity with the inside surfaces of the flanges 28, to retain the antifriction devices 30 in a dust-proof relation. The hubs 27 of the housing plates 25 and 26 are provided with screw threaded openings into which lubricating devices or accessories 48'may be attached, as a means of supplying lubricant to the said anti-friction bearings.
When assembled in the above relation the attaching lugs 40 of the sections 25 and 26 are in a facing relation with the apertures 41 thereof aligning, so that an attaching bolt 49 maybe detachably extended through the apertures 41, the lugs 40 being spaced-by a spacing sleeve 50 about the bolt 49; it being understood that a head of the bolt 49 engages the outer side of one of the lugs 40, and that the nut thereof engages at the outer side of the other lug, to clamp the attaching lugs 40 together in a spaced relation according to the length of the sleeve 50 as illustrated in Figure 2.
Atv diametrically opposed locations from the attaching lugs 40, the complementary half-cylindrical portions 42 are arranged in a cylindrical relation, with the recesses 44 thereof facing, and the recesses 46 facing; the segments 45 providing an annular contiguous flange, which obstructs access to the enlarged recess 44 except through the opening defined by the recesses 46, as illustrated in Figure 2.
In this position the complementary half portions 42 have the outer surfaces thereof in conformity, with the threads thereof providing external screw threads to receive a detachable clamping sleeve 60, as in case the device A is to be used upon a mast D, or to receive a detachable attaching sleeve 61 of a smaller type, in case the device A is to be used with a swivel E, F, or G.
In case the improved pulley block is to be used as a mast head at the top of the mast D, the connecting sleeve 60 is used for connecting the externally screw threaded portions 42 of the housing sections 25 and 26. This sleeve 60 is threaded onto the externally threaded cylindrical half portions 42 the screw threaded socket-.62 only being'part-ially filled by the portions 42, and in order to detachably receive the upper screw threaded end 63 of the mast D therein, to support the device A upon the mast D in the relation illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The sleeve 60, if desired, may be provided with approved apertured attaching lugs 64 by means of which guy Wires or cables 65 may be attached thereto.
Under some circumstances it may be desirable to use the device A in a depending relation, supported by a swivel. In this case the swivel E maybe suitably attached to the top'of a derrick or in other similar location, and the swivel E includes the body portion 7 O with a reduced shank 71 having an enlarged head 72 thereon. The clamping sleeve 61 for the sections of the housing is shorter than the sleeve 60 above described, and the same is internally screw threadedat 74 for screw threading onto the external screw threads of the'attaching portions 42 of the housing parts 25 and 26; the sleeve 61 when fully assembled having the outer edge thereof flush with the end edges of the portions 42, as is well illustrated in Figures 8 and 9 of the drawings. Prior to the assemblage of the housing parts 25 and 26, however, the swivel member E is assembled with the head 72 in the pocket provided by the facing recesses 44, and the annular flange provided by the segments 45 provides the opening thru which the shank 71 extends, it being impossible to move the head 72 thru the opening defined thru the flanges 45, but the shank 71 is of such a nature as to revolve in the opening formed by the recesses 46. In such manner the swivel E rotatably receives the device A thereon. The swivels E and G merely difier in form the swivel shaft E being used for rigid attachment to any approved support; the swivel F having an open hook head thereon, and the swivel G including an eye 81. All of the swivels E, F and G have shanks 71 thereon of such a nature as to permit complete detachment of the sleeve 61 -from the portions 42 of the housing sections, While the head 72 is still assembled in the socket provided by the complementary facing portions 42.
In order to insure that the portions 42 will come to an aligning relation to be held in such position against transverse displace ment, it is preferred to longitudinally groove each of the portions 42 as at 90, at one side of the recess 44, and to provide a longitudinal V-shaped rib 91 at the opposite side parallel with the groove 90. The grooves and ribs 91 are straight, and the rib 91 of one of the portions 42 is received within the corresponding V-shaped groove 90 of the other portion 42, after the manner illustrated in the sectional view of Figure 7, and this tends to hold the portions 42 in a seated relation to form a true cylinder.
If desired the plates or sections 25 and 26 may be reduced in weight by transversely aperturing the same as at 95, and at the outer sides thereof between the axis of the pulley and the portions 42, reinforcing ribs or webs 99 may be provided.
From the foregoing description of this invention it is apparent that a novel type of sheave block and head has been provided, embodying a compact and eflicient construction which will permit of access by ready assemblage or disassemblage or" the parts; the parts being connected in an efficient relation to provide a durable construction which may be attached to masts, derricks, or used in connection with common swivels.
Various changes in the shape, size, and ar rangement of parts may be made in the forms of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim.
I claim:
As an article of manufacture a housing comprising a pair of plate-like sections having complementary cylinder providing segments thereon externally screw threaded, an internally screw threaded sleeve detachably assembled on said segments to hold them in cylinder relation for holding the plates in spaced assembled relation, said sleeve being longer than said cylinder formed by the seg-' ments to provide an internally screw threaded socket outwardly of the outer end of said cylinder.
