Description

1929. e. VANDERHOOF 1 ,739,336
- KNIFE HEAD HOLDER Filed July 5. 1928 V ////A I INVENT ,3 1 V nck'rhoof A TTORNE Y.
l atented Dec. 10, 1929 UNITED STATES GEORGE E. VANDERHOOF, OF KARVAL, COLORADO KNIFE-HEAD HOLDER Application filed. July 5, 1928.
The object of the invention is to provide a device for application to the knife head of a sickle on a mower, grain binder, header, or other machine provided with a sickle, so as to effectively prevent the knife head leaving its place between the knife head guide and knife guard in the event of wear which very quickly follows the use of such a machine when used on sandy ground; and to provide a simple device which may be readily applied to the mowing or cutting elements of a conventional machine without any modification of the structure thereof, the device being of simple form and therefore susceptible of cheap manufacture and low marketing cost.
lVith this object in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is aplan view of that portion of a mowing machine with which the invention is directly associated.
* igure 2 is a sectional view on the plane innicated by the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the knife edge.
The invention consists of a yoke 1 disposed in spanning relation to the knife head 2 with which the pitman 3 operating the knife head is pivotally connected, the knife head being carried on the sickle l for the operation of the latter when the pitman is reciprocated.
The yoke is of arcuate form and made preferably of fiat metal, the curved portion 5 being disposed at right angles to the terminal portions 6 and 7 The yoke is secured in place by the bolts 8, 9 and 10, these bolts serving not only to hold the yoke but to hold the knife head guide 11 and knife guard 12 in place, replacing the bolts originally used for this purpose. The under edge of the curved portion of the yoke serves to prevent the knife head raising and thus leaving its position between the knife head guide and knife guard and thus prevents many broken sickles with the consequent delay in making repairs. Being of such extremely simple form, it may be manufactured at small expense and applied with practically no difficulty. The guard be- Serial No. 290,453.
ing disposed so that the curved portion is directed away from the end of the pitman, interference between the latter and the guard is prevented.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
In combination with a sickle element of an agricultural machine, the same having a knife head and knife head guide and knife guard between which the knife head moves, a guard yoke having a curved or arcuate portion spanning the knife head and terminals disposed respectively upon the knife head guide and knife guard, and bolts extending through the terminals of the guard yoke and through the knife head guide and knife guard respectively and retaining said parts in position, said guard yoke being formed of flat metal twisted to dispose the curved or arcuate portion at substantially right angles to the terminal portions.
In test mony whereof he aflixes his signature.
GEORGE E. VANDERHOOF.
