Description
M. FOEHNER.
PAD-LOCK. v No. 173,932. Patented Feb. 22,1876.
MARTIN FOEHNER, OF EWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND PATENT OFFICE ALBERT FELLER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PADLOCKS.
, Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,932, dated February 22, 1876; application filed January 31, 1876. v a
to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
This im'ention relates to that class of padlocks which are operated without tumblers or bolts, and in which the key-holes are hidden from sigh t.
The accompanying drawing fully illustrates the nature and character of my invention, in which- Figure l is a cross-section of a padlock combining my improvements, and constructed in accordance with the principles embodied in my invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the key adapted to lock and unlock the same.
To enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use my lock, I will proceed to describe its construction and'oporation.
My invention consists ill the peculiar form given to the look, as well as in the manner of its construction and mode of operation.
The form herein shown, as will be observed, is that of an ordinary key, the handle of which constitutes the bow of the lock and the barrel the key-hole.
The padlock, as shown in Fig. l of the drawing, is locked, the key removed, and the key- NVhen the pin a is unscrewed release the plug 0, the latter is withdrawn and of the keyA, the handle of which is conformed and adapted to fit the head a of said screwpin, which headconstitutes also a portion of the bit I), as-shown and indicated in Fig. 1. far enough to the key inserted in its place, with which another screw-pin, 0, is unscrewed until the bow D is released, allowing itto be withdrawn, which completes the operation.
It may be observed that the several parts, especially the head a of the screw-pin a and the plug" 0, should be fitted as neatly and snugly as possible, so that a person not informed would find it difficult, it not impossible, to discover its mode of operation.
The screw-pins a and 0 should also be fitted tightly, particularly the former, so that it cannot be turned by the thumb and fingers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A padlock of the form herein set forth and shown, and provided with the screw-pins a c and' plug G and a key, A, adapted to lock and unlock the same, all being constructed, combined, and arranged to operate substantially as set forth and described.-
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my own 1 hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN FOEHNER. Witnesses:
