Our invention relates to means for supporting the hangers for the brakes of railroad cars in such manner-that the hangers or links are pendently supported in place on the truck side frames. 1 j j Brake hangers are usually supported from an integral portion of the truck side frame which in our construction consists of projec tions or lugs cast integral with the steel side frame. These portions or lugs project from the side frame a sufficient distance and in a direction transversely of the wheelsof the truck; while the hangers or suspending elements are usually in the nature of U-shaped links as illustrated in the drawing or they may be of the loop or continuous link type.
Our invention contemplates a construction which will permit the use of eithertypes of links or hangers so'that the substitution of the one for the other maybe readily made without alteration or'change in the projecting portions or lugs on the side frame or in the keeper or retainerelement employed.
Our invention contemplates means where-' by a three point upward thrust receiving element or member is provided which at the same time acts as a keeper-or'retainer for the hanger or suspending element'and which is of such construction that it may be "inserted into place after the hangers or supporting means have been properly placed on the -projections or lugs of the side'frame and which therefore may be independently removed when occasion requires. Our construction therefore permits assembly of the parts and be readily accom- I hangers 1n order that the hanger may stradsuspension of the braketo plished.
The'objects' and advantages of our inven tion will be readily apparent from the detailed description of-the accompanying drawing, whereina I v Figure 1 s anelevationof a portlon of a truck side .frame and portions of the suspending hanger or link with our improved retainer element or keeper means'shown applied.

In the particular exemplification of the invention as disclosed in the drawing, a portion of the truck side frame is shown at 10 provided withthe projection 11 formed integral with the truck side frame and reenforced by the web portion 12. The projection 11 is disposed in a transverse direction relative to the truck side frame and the wheels and the projection is slotted. longitudinally to provide the top and bottom portions or bifurcations 13 and 14 on the wheel side thereof. The bifurcations or portions 13' and 14 at an intermediate point are each shown provided with a corresponding lip 15 arranged parallel in vertical spaced relation as more clearly shown in Figure 2 and each li apertured at 16 to receive a headed pin 1 which is 'inserted after the brake hanger and the keeper element have been put into place.

lihe keeper or retainer element 26 is of a thickness corresponding substantially with the vertical spacing between the bifurcations 13 and 1 1- in order that the keeper or retainer element may freely slide into place after the hanger or its supporting pin, as the case may be, has been inserted into position in the groove 18. The keeper *or retainer element 26 comprises a metallic plate which is slotted transversely as shown at 27, 27 at points adapted to correspond with the transverse slots 21, 21, in order to fit over and around the upper ends of the hangers, whether of the 'U- shape or loop type, and permit fnee'osoillatory movement thereof.

These lips-29amadapted to extend across'th'e end'softhe supporti-ng rod or headless pin-19 and thu's prev'ent longitudinal movement of the latter. As is apparent, these "depending lips 29, 29 will hold the supporting pin 19 against longitudinal movement and thus *obviates the-necessity of pro.- viding any additional means for "locking the pin in place. It'will be understood that the retainer element or keeper plate 26 is therefore of length slightly'greater than the length of the lower projection 14: so thatthed'epending lips 29, 29 will be disposed slightly beyond the sides of the two outer portions or ends of the lower bifurcation 14. j
The keeper plate or retainer element 26 at what may be termed its outer side is shown apertured at 30 which is adapted to register Withthe apertures 16 in the upper'and lower bifurcations13 and 14 to receive-the retainingpin 17. The projection or'li'p 25 ofthe vkeeper plate or element 26, as previously stated, enters the socketor pocket 23 in the wall of the projection 11 and rests on the shoulder or ledge24c'and acts as a centering element which also prevents "lateral oscil la tory movement of the keeper ;'plate or element j l With, our improved structure the keeper plate or element, especially when employed in connection with the U-typehanger, provides a three point'surface adapte'd to receive the upward thrust of the hanger orits suspending pin and thus relieves the upper bifurcation 13 of the integral side frame projection 11 of all wear.
In the application of the brakes, one set of brakes, namely the set on the side of the wheels toward which they are turning, causes a downward pull on the hanger, while the other set of brakes, namely the setof brakes on the rear side relative to the direction in which the wheels are turning, causes an upward thrust on the hanger during each application of the brakes. It has been found in practice that this constant upward thrust causes considerable wear on the supporting lugs or projections of the side frames, in ducing a considerable amount of chatter in the supporting elements, especially after a slight wear has been encountered. This soon results in an increase in wear and undue play to such an extent that proper application of the brakes is affected. As this wear, without our keeper plate, ison an integral part of the side frame where it cannot be renewed or repaired,'it-soon necessitates discarding the side fram'esof the truck before their usefulness otherwise is impaired, thus entailing considenable loss in time and expense.
The exemplification of the invention as disc losed'in'th'e drawing is believed to be the best embodiment of the invention, the description whereof is made in terms G11'113l0 V0(l merely to describe thestructure which may be modified in certain respects without, however, departing, fromthe spirit of our invention.
What we claim is:
1. In a'brake hanger support, a truck side frame provided with a projection slotted longitudinally to provide vertically spaced bifurcations with the lower bifurcation slotted transversely and grooved longitudinally, a keeper plate adapted to fit intermediateofjthebifureations and having its lower face dished at a point coincident with the longitudinal groove in the lower 'bifurcati on.

'll ncombination with a truck side frame provided with a bifurcated extension disposed in a "transverse direction, the lower bifurcation being grooved longitudinally and slotted transversely at horizontally spaced points, with said slots extending beyond and intersecting said groove, a keeper plate insertible between said bifurcations and extendingthroughout the'length of-the lower bi fu rcation-,th'e'lowerface at the inner end of sai d plat-e being disheaand means for removably securing the keeper plate in place.
3. In a brake hanger support, a keeper plate "for holding the hanger in place co1nprising a plate dished on its lower side adjacent to the inner longitudinal edge, withthe dishing terminating short of the ends ofthe plate to provide endwalls at opposite ends of the dished portion.
4. In a brake hanger support, a keeper Ill) plate for holding the hanger in place comprising a plate dished on its lower surface lengthwise of one of its longitudinal edges with the dishing terminating short of the ends of the plate to provide abutting shoulders at opposite ends, the plate being slotted transversely of the dished portion.
5. In combination with a truck side frame having a longitudinally slotted projection and a pair of slots in the projection disposed transversely of the longitudinal slot and provided with a socket at the inner side of the longitudinal slot, intermediate of the transverse slots, a keeper plate adapted to fit into said longitudinal slot, the inner longitudinal side of the plate being dished on its lower face, said plate being slotted transversely at points adapted to register with the transverse slots in the side frame, a projection on the keeper plate adapted to fit into said socket.
6. The combination with a brake hanger and a truck side frame slotted longitudinally to provide upper and lower bifurcations, the lower bifurcation being grooved longitudinally to receive a brake-hanger or hanger pin, the lower bifurcation being transversely slotted for passage of the sides of the hanger, both bifurcations being provided with registering apertures, of a keeper plate adapted to fit between the bifurcations, said plate being transversely slotted at points registering with the transverse slots in the lower bifurcation, the lower face of the plate at its inner longitudinally side being dished, the ends of the plate being formed to depend across the ends of the grooves in the lower bifurcation, while the outer longitudinal side of the plate is apertured at a point registering with the apertures in the bifurcations.
7 In combination with a truck side frame provided with projections arranged parallel in vertically spaced relation, the lower projection being longitudinally grooved and transversely slotted, a keeper plate adapted to fit between said projections and to extend beyond the transverse slots of the lower projection, the lower face of the plate being dished at a point corresponding with the groove in the lower projection, the ends of the plate being disposed across the ends of the groove in the lower projection, and means for removably securing the, plate between said projections.
8. In combination with a truck frame provided with vertically spaced projections formed to provide a longitudinal groove therebetween, a keeper plate insertible between said projections and having a dished face, said dishing terminating short of the ends of the plate to provide abutting shoulders at opposite ends, and means whereby the plate is removably secured between said projections.
9. In combination with a truck frame provided with a laterally extending arm slotted longitudinally from one side intermediate of the top and bottom of the arm so as to provide vertically spaced portions on one side of the arm, the lower ortion on its upper surface and removed rom the outer longitudinal edge being grooved, both of said portions being formed to provide lips having registering openings therethrough, a keeper plate insertible between said vertically spaced portions and having a dished face, the outer longitudinal side of the plate having an apertured portion adapted to register with the openings in said lips, and means adapted to a pass through the registering openings in said lips and in said plate whereby the plate is movably secured in place.
