LEVEQUE, OF WENHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSI G-NOR TO UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, OF IPATERSON, NEW JERSEY, CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY FEED MECHANISM FOR SEWING MACHINES Original application filed February 2, 1924, Serial No. 690,285. Divided and this application filed October The present invention relates to shoe sewing machines and is herein shown as embodied in a sole sewing machine of the socalled McKay type, the stitch forming devices of which comprise a straight hook needle and the work support of which consists of a rotatable horn arranged to extend within the shoe, and provided at its tip with a needle threading device or Whirl for laying the thread in the hook of the needle.
In addition, such machines include a shoe feeding device, and a presser foot which is movable relatively to the horn to clamp the Work and release it so that it may be fed.
The object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and operation of a feed mechanism suitable for a machine of the McKay type and thereby contribute to the production of a machine which will run smoothly and quietly as compared with machines of this type heretofore devised, and which can be operated at a much higher speed than prior machines.
l/Vith these objects in View, the invention consists in the devices, combinations, and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The several features of the present invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate the several features of the invention as embodied in a McKay sewing machine.
Fig. 1 is a detail view illustrating in front elevation certain portions of the presser foot lifting mechanism, the mechanism for varying the throw of the needle, and the feeding mechanism; Fig. 2 is a detail view, looking from therear, of the presser foot, the feed point and feed carrier; and Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of' the parts in Fig. 2.
For a detailed description of the complete machine to which the present invention has been applied, reference may be had to the applicants pending application Serial No. 690,265, filed February 2, 1924, of which the present application is a division.

The feeding mechanism of the machine comprises a feed point 44 secured in a holder to be located in the desired position transversely of the direction of feed the feed point holder is made in two parts having an adjustable tongue and groove connection and secured togther by a locking screw 52. A spring 54 coiled around the pivot pin 48 is secured at one end to a collar fast on the pin and at the other end to the feed point holder and tends to swing the holder in a direction to bring it into contact with the end of the feed point carrier 50. The feed point carrier is mounted upon the block 36 at the lower end of the presser foot bar by means of pins 56 which projects rearwardly from the block through slots 58 formed in the feed point carrier. These slots have parallel inclined portions and horizontal portions which are in line with each other, the horizontal portions extending in the direction of feed and the inclined portions extending obliquely to the direction of feed. The feed point carrier 50 is actuated by mechanism hereinafter described'and, as a result of the pin and slot connections with the block 36, the carrier moves back and forth in the line of feed and also towards and from the work and maintains an unvaried angular position during these movements. The movements of the feed point carrier cause the feed point to engage and feed the work and the pivotal connection between the feed point holder and the carrier permits the feed point to drag over the work during the retracting movement of the carrier. During the latter portion of the backward or retracting movement of the feed point carrier the feed point engages the presser foot 8 and slides up its grooved inclined leading surface. The presser foot 8 is adjustably secured in a groove in a downward projection of the block 36.
The feed point carrier is moved back and forth in the line of feed by a lever 60, the lower end of which is connected by a link 62 to the feed point carrier. The upper end of the lever 60 is provided with a cam slot 6 '5' which is engaged by a roll 66 mounted on the lever of the needle actuating mechanism. The lever 60 is acted upon by a spring which moves the lever in a direction to hold the left hand side of the cam slot 64 in engagement 10 with the roll 66. 1. A shoe sewing machine having, in combination, stitch forming devices including a g) straight; hook needle, a shoe supporting horn arranged to extend within the shoe, needle threadingmechanism located in the horn, a feed point, a presser foot, a feed point carrier, means for moving the carrier forward and 3 1 backwardin the line of feed, a plurality of pin and slot connections between the presser foot and carrier arranged to allow a bodily sliding movement of the carrier in the line of feed and to move the carrier towards and from the work, and a pivotal connection between the feed-point and carrier to permit the feed point to swing on its pivot with relation to the carrier and drag over the work during the backward movement of the carrier. 3 2.
