This invention relates toanti-skid devices and has for an object the provision of a safety calk web-formed of iiexible material which will easily conform to the contour of a a Vehicle tire and which may be easily and quickly secured thereto.
Another object, is to provide reinforcing means for the flexible web which will materially lengthen the life of the device.
Still another object is to provide calks upon the web which are so arranged as to provide sufficient traction and at the same time prevent sliding or skidding of the vehicle in either a sidewise or straight forward and backward direction. l
With these and other obj ects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more full described and particularly pointed out in t e appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates generally an anti-skid de.-

preferably of rubber which is adapted to encircle the tire of a vehicle wheel and to be secured thereto in any suitable manner. This web is composed of a plurality of web sections 12, each section being of substantially X formation and having its end portions overlapping and secured to t-he end portions of adjacent sections.
Each section 12 has embedded therein a reinforcing wire 13 which is also in the form of an X and which is provided at predetermined points with loop portions forming eyes 14. During the molding of each section, provision is made whereby the space within each eye is kept clear so that when the finished product is completed, there will be holes or openings through the section at ythe points where the loops are located. This .is to provide openings for receiving the fastening means for securing the web sections together.
As shown in Figure 5, three of these eyes are formed at each corner of the X, while four eyes are formed at the central inner portion of the X. Preferably the four end portions of each section are formed into tongues 15, each having a thickness of substantially half of that of the rest of the section. The tongues of one section are so formed as to cooperate with those of its adjacent sections and to dove tail therewith to form a neat joint.
As will be noted, two of the three eyes of each end portion of a section, are positioned in each tongue 15 and the arrangement is such that when cooperating tongues are placed together the eyes of one ton ue will be superposed upon those of the ot er tongue so that aligned openings will be formed for the rece tion of suitable fastening means 16.
}l`or' affording suiicient traction, a plul rality of pairs of spaced calks 17 are provided and are adapted to be positioned directly oposite each other at the points of connection between adjacent stations. Each calk is adapted to rest directly upon a plate 18 and both the plate and calk are provided with apertures 19 and 20 respectively which are adapted to align with each other and also with the aligned openings in the tongue portions previously referred to. When the several elements are assembled with the openings so aligned, the fastening means 16 may be applied and all of the parts securely fastened together. With this arrangement the same fastening means are provided for securingone section to another and also the calks and their supporting plates to the sections. With this arrangement each calk 1s not only adequately secured in place but the provision of the supporting plate therefor also contributes to the effecting of a strong joint between the end portions of each section.
Each pair of calks is provided with aligned studs 21 extending transversely of the web and having inwardly and downwardly inclined faces 22. As clearly shown in Figure 6 when the web is applied to a tire 23, the web will conform to the shape of the tire, the plates 18 being slightly curved so that they will also conform to the shape of the tire. In this position the faces 22 of opposite studs will lie in substantially the same straight plane; however as each pair of calks is moved to the position where they receive the full i weight of the vehicle, the tire 23 will flatten out as designated in Figure 7 and this will effect a slight movement of the calks causing the cooperating faces of the studs to be inclined inwardly to each other so that the outer end 24 of each face will constitute a point and dig into the surface over which the vehicle is moving and afford suflicient traction therefor.
In order to prevent any sidewise skidding each web section is provided with a centrally positioned calk 25, this calk being provided with a stud 26 which is positioned longitudinally of the web. This calk is also provided with suitable apertures 27 which are adapted to align with the centrally located eyes of the reinforcing wire of the section and to be secured to the section by the usual fastening means 16 passing through both the eyes and apertures 27 in a manner similar to that described above.
Preferably each plate 18 is provided with ears 28 to which are suitably secured the end portions of a hook member 29, this member being connected with others of its kind to one of a pair of cables 30 for securing the web to the tire 28.
It will be noted that each plate 18 is provided with suitable apertures, each of which is adapted to align with one of the eyes adjacent one ofthe end portions of each section. The usual fastening means are adapted to engage in these openings and to additionally secure the plate to each of the sections. A s
shown, each of the eyes which are adapted to align with the openings in the calks are provided with double loops so as to insure a strong connection at these points.
With the construction as thus described, it will be apparent that by providing the reinforcing wires in the sections and forming loops in these wires through which the fastening means are passed, that stresses and strains will be taken up by the reinforcing wires ratherv than by the flexible sections themselves and the life of the web will thereby be materially increased. It is furthermore apparent that a strong connection is provided between the end portions of each web section and that the calks are so arranged on the web as to obtain the best results and to provide against skidding in different directions.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In an anti-skid device, a flexible web comprising overlapping sections, calks positioned on the web at the point of connection of adjacent sections, and a common securing means for said sections and calks.
2. In an anti-skid device, a ieXible web comprising overlapping sections, metallic reinforcing means for said web embedded in said sections and having eyes, and means for securing said sections together including fasteners projecting through said eyes.
3. In an anti-skid device, a flexible web comprising overlapping sections, reinforcing means for said web comprising wires embedded in said sections and provided with loop portions forming eyes, calks positioned on said web and having apertures aligned with said eyes, and a common securing means for Isaid sections and calks including fasteners projecting through said eyes and apertures.
4. In an anti-skid device, a flexible web comprising sections having` overlapping end portions, reinforcing means for said web comprising wires embedding in said sections and provided with loopportions forming eyes, the eyes in the end portion of one section lying in superposed relation to the eyes of the end portion of an adjacent section, calks positioned at the end portions of adjacent sections, Said calks having apertures aligned with the aforesaid superposed eyes, and a common securing means for said calls and sections including fastenersprojecting through said eyes and apertures.
5. In an anti-skid device, a web composed of a plurality of web sections of substantially X formation having overlapping portions icq provided with registering ogenngs, calks having attaching plates provi ed w1th openings in registratwn with the openings in said K we s, and means for securin one section to 5 another and for securing sald calks to said `sections including means engaging the registerin openings aforesaid.
