Description

Dec. 10, 1929.
H. J. FIDDELKE REPRODUCING NEEDLE FOR TALKING MACHINES, PHQNOGRAPHS, AND SIMILAR INSTRUMENTS Filed Jan. 25, 1926 Patented Dec. 10, 1929 HARRY J. FIDDELKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T HALL .MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS REPBODUONG- NEEDLE FOR- TALKING MACHINES, PHONOGRAPHS, AND SIMILAR IN- STRUMENTS Application filed January 25, 1926.
My invention relates to reproducing needles for talking machines, phonographs, and similar instruments.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a practical and eflicient form of needle of this general class.
Another object of the invention is to permit a needle of the class specified having a general angular shape or configuration to be advantageously held in a holder for non-an gular needles; and more especially in this con nection to arrange for the advantageous holding of a needle of general triangular cross section, such for example, as the. usual form of fibre or bambo needle, to be held in a holder particularly adapted and constructed for holding cylindric shaped needles.
Another object of the invention is to arranged for the advantageous holding of needles whose point end or portion is of substantial size to be held in a holder particularly adapted for needles of smaller size. Further objects of the invention are to se cure the foregoing and other desirable results in a simple and expeditious manner.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a needle of the class specitied embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of said needle on a much enlarged scale for convenience of illustration;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a needle shown in Fig. 2; and
Figs. 4 and 5 are end elevations of modified forms.
Referring to the drawings, and especially to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, I show a needle comprising a point portion 1 and a holder portion 2, the
former being provided with a point 3 which 40 is adapted to be placed on the record in connection with which the needle is to be used.
The point portion 1 is shown as substantially triangular in cross section, as best illustrated in Fig. 3, as for example, substantially the triangular shape of a fibre or bamboo desirable and Serial No. 83,434.
needle in common use at the resent time. The holder portion 2 is shown 0 more or less rounded or curved shape, being preferably cylindric, as shown in Fig. 3. This portion 2 is also preferably smaller than portion 1, preferred arrangement being to give portion 2 a cylindrical shape, such that its cross section will be a circle inscribed in the triangular cross sectional area of point portion 1.
By this arrangement it will be seen that a needle of substantially triangular general shape in so far as the point portion is concerned, may be used, such for example as a fibre or bamboo needle of the present day, giving all the desirable qualities of such a needle, and at the same time this needle may be readily mounted in a holder particularly adapted for holding a cylindric needle and especially a cylindricneedle smaller than the usual fibre or bamboo needle. In this way fibre or bamboo needles may be used on phonographs, talking machines and the like, where they could not be used now without some change in the holder. In other words, the reduced cylindric end portion 2 may be inserted in a small cylindric socket of a needle holder which could not take the triangular end portion 1. In this way the desirable qualities of the bamboo or fibre needle may be obtained in machines where they cannot be obtained at the present time.
It will also be seen that the arrangement permits generally the use of a needle having a relatively large point portion to be used where such point portion is too large for the available needle holding device.
In Fig. 3 I show one side 4 of the point portion 1, provided with the cortex or skin of the bamboo, and another side 5, of some what concave shape. I
In Fig. 4 I show both sides 5 and 6 of concave formation. In Fig. 5 I show all the sides of the point portion fiat and straight.
It will be undeistood that both point portion 1 and holder portion 2 may be of difierent shape and configuration from that herein shown, and that other changes and modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
A needle of the class specified comprising a point portion having a triangular cross section and a holder portion having a circular cross section, the circle of said holder portion being substantially a circle inscribed in the triangular cross section of the point portion.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 16th day of January, A. D.,
HARRY J. FIDDELKE.
