Description

Dec. 10, 1929. w. s. FLEMING PROTECTIVE PLUG FOR DRAINAGE FIXTURES Filed March 18, 1929 Thar/775":
Patented Dec. 10, 1929 UNITED STATES WELLS S. FLEMING, F PORTLAND, OREGON PROTECTIVE PLUG FOR DRAINAGE FIXTURES Application filed March 18, 1929. Serial No. 348,045.
My invention relates to means for temporarily closing the bore of a drainage fixture or the like during its installation.
It is the usual practice to install roof and floor drains while the building is under construction and sometimes even without their refuse guards or grille-plates, the result of which is that waste material and refuse which accumulates during the construction work is 19 carried into the said drains and stops them up.
This requires that before the building is completed the drains and their fixtures must be thoroughly cleaned out. Further, the cleaning out is done hurriedly and often carelessly, or not at all, causing trouble later from clogged drains. Also, the drainage fixtures are sometimes installed before the drain pipes are connected to them and water collecting on the fioors and roofs from various causes drains through to the lower stores to the damage of the workbelow.
Therefore, the object of my invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means which may be conveniently inserted in the bore of the drainage fixture to close it temporarily and which may be easily removed and thrown away when it is desirable to open up the drainage system.
I attain my object in a protective plug for 39 drainage fixtures consisting of a cylindrical body of fibrous material closed at one end, said cylindrical body provided with an outer covering of easily rupturable material secured to said body on a longitudinal portion of relatively narrow dimensions, whereby said plug may be inserted in the bore of the drainage fixture and held therein by frictional engagement to temporarily close the same and when removed said outer covering will 40 tear away, breaking said frictional engagement with said bore.
The details of construction and mode of installation of my invention are hereinafter fully described with reference to the accom- .1.: panying drawings.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of my protective plug and illustrates the outer wrapper thereof and the narrow portion by which it is secured to the plug;
Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the drain body of a drainage fixture with my plug partly inserted therein;
Fig. 3 shows a drainage fixture completely installed with my protective plug; and
Fig. 4 shows a section taken on the line l4t of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the figures my protective plug comprises an inverted cup or a cylindrical section a closed at one end as at Z), and composed of heavy cardboard or the like, of such diameter as to fit into the drain section 2 of a drainage fixture 3.
The section a is provided about its circumference with an outer covering or wrapper 0 of paper or other easily torn material which is glued or otherwise fastened tothe section Ct along its edge and wrapped about it, the edge e overlapping and being similarly glued on the edge cl, so that the cover 0 is only fastened to the section a along a narrow longitudinal portion as at f, Fig. 1.
The use of my protective plug is as follows i When a drainage fixture as 3 is installed, either in a floor or roof and before the finished surface 10 of plastic material is laid, my plug will be inserted in the drain section 2 and then if' desirable the grille-plate 4 or other guard may be put on as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Then since the inverted cup or plug extencs downwardly to the bottom of the drain section 2, not only is the bore of thedrain section closed but also the seepage slots 7. This is especially important because the drainage fixtures are installed before the surface of plastic material 10 is laid and since the slots 7 would then be open, it is important that they be temporarily closed to prevent plastic material or accumulations of water or refuse from entering the drain.
Further, when the drainage system is com pletely installed and cemented and each fix ture is sealed with my plug, the system may then be tested in the usual manner as by introducing a gas under pressure into the system.
Finally, when the drain is to be opened my plug may be conveniently removed since as it is withdrawn if the plug tends to stick to the sides of the drain section, the paper cover 0 will tear permitting the withdrawal of the plug and the cover 0 may be easily disposed of.
I claim 1. The combination with a drainage fixture of an inverted cup, and adapted to be removably inserted in the bore of the drainage fixture and held therein by frictional engagement to temporarily close the same.
i 2. The combination with a drainage fixture of an inverted cup, said cup provided with an outer covering of easily rupturable material secured to said cup on a longitudinal portion of relatively narrow dimensions, whereby said cup may be inserted in the bore of the drainage fixture and heldtherein by frictional engagement to temporarily close the same and when removed said outer covering will tear away, breaking said frictional engagement with said bore. I
3. The combination with a drainage fixture of an, inverted fibrous cup, said cup provided with an outer covering of easily rupturable material secured to said cup on a longitudinal portion of relatively narrow dimensions, whereby said cup may be inserted in the bore of the drainage fixture and held therein by frictional engagement to temporarily close the same and when removed said outer covering will 'tearaway, breaking said frictional engagement with said bore.
4. Apro tective plug for drainage fixtures consisting of, acylindrical body closed at q one end, and adapted to be removably inserted in the bore of the drainage fixture and held therein byfrictional engagement to temporarily close thesame.
5. A protect-iveplug for drainage fixtures consisting of, a cylindrical body of fibrous material closed at one end, said cylindrical body provided with an outer covering of easily rupturable material secured to said body on a longitudinal portion of relatively narrow dimensions, whereby said plug may be inserted in the bore of the drainage fixture and held therein by frictional engagement to temporarily close the same.
6. A protective plug for drainage fixtures consisting of, a cylindrical body closed at one end, said cylindrical body provided with an outer covering of easily rupturable material secured to said body on a'longitudinal portion of relatively narrow dimensions, whereby said plug may be inserted in the bore of the drainage fixture and held therein by frictional engagement to temporarily close the same and when removed said outer covering will tear away, breaking said frictional engagement with said bore.
