Description

J. F. FIELD MIXING MACHINE Dec. l0, 1929.
Filed NOV. 1, 1928 lllllllll -AIU Wr r m- -5 I n I k I I I @gli I I V m FPTOR" BY( MMM Patented Dec. 10, 1929 PATENT ortica JOI-IN F. IFIEHQD,` OF OVOSSO, MICHIGAN MIXING Mach-Ime Application filed November This invention is an improvement'in mixing machines, andthe principal object thereof is to provide a simple, novel, and efficient machine for mixing together various ingredients, whereby the ingredients will be thoroughly diffused, said machine being particularly adapted for mixing balanced rations for stock feed; also for mixing cement, fertilizers, and in fact any other materials which must be aerated, dried, mixed in batches, or in proportions by a formula, said machines embodying certain novel features of arrange ment and construction as hereinafter set forth.
I will explain the invention with reference to the accompanying drawing` which illustrates one practical embodiment thereof to enable othersito adopt and use the same, and will summarize in the claims the novel features of construction, and novel combinations of parts, forwhich protection is desired.
In said drawing :h
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the mill, partly broken away.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof, from the hopper end.
Fig. Ll; is an end elevation thereof, from 'the opposite end.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section through the driving mechanism, and the adjacent end of the drum.
Fig. 6 is a. detail. My novel mill preferably comprises a revoluble drum l, having its ends closed by means of castings 5 and 50 bolted thereto as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, said castings being provided with axially'4 disposed hub portions 5, 50a respectively journaled in bearings 3, secured to supporting frames 4 at each end` of the drum. The periphery of casting 5 is provided with gear teeth 5b coaxial with drum 1, said gear teeth meshing with a p-inion 6, provided on one side with a hub extension 6a, the hub extensions being journaled in a bearing 8, attached to the adjacent frame 4. A sprocket 7 is keyed to the outer end of extension 6a.
Shaft 2 extends axially through drum 1 and castings 5 and 50 said shaft being journaled 1, 192s. serial No. 316,386.
in thelhubi of casting 5 as shown. On the end of shaft 2 extension to drum 1 and adjacent casting 5 are located the driving pul leys 9 and 10 to be rotated by belts not shown in opposite directions, both of said pulleys 55 being loosely mounted on a sleeve 11, (Fig. 5) which is keyed or otherwise secured to shaft`2 and revolves therewith. ,On the inner ends of the hubs of pulleys 9 and 10 are formed clutch jaws 9, 10, and between the pulleys is a sliding clutch 12 which is feath-V ered tothe sleeve 11 and movable longitudinally ,thereof by means of a hand lever 13 pivoted to a `member il@L of frame 1l. On the outer end of the sleeve 11 is placed a set collar Any other means, however, for versmg the rotation of the shaft 2 may be used. Between pulley 9 and bearing` 3 on shaft 2 is keyed a sprocket 15 which drives i the sprocket 7 by means of a chain 16 to ro- 7U tate the drum 1.
Extending into the drum 1, from the opposite end thereof is a fixed open trough 22 coaxial with shaft 2 in which trough a conveyor screw 18, mounted on shaft 2, rotates while drum l revolves. As shown in Fig. 6, trough 22 extends through the hub of casting` 50, and through the adjacent bearing 3, whereby a continuous,unbroken, passageway is provided into and out permitting the drum 1 to rotate around the fixed trougl1122 while shaft 2 is likewise rotating. Within the drum 1, are four longitudinally and radially disposed plates 23 ati `i tached to the drum at the ends and inner side C.; of the drum, and to each side of which plates j are secured a plurality of parallel vanes 24 disposed at an angle to the` transverse axis of drum 1, as shown in the drawing, and j slanting preferably towards the `end cast tu ing of'thedrum. .j `At theendfof drum 1 adjacent casting 50 is located a hopper 17 into which the trough 22 and the shaft 2, carrying the conveyor' screw 18, extendswhereby the material may ibe moved in trough 22 by conveyor screw 181 into or out of thedrum `Preferably the hopperlfis an integralpart of trough 22', but may `be made separately, desired,` and j arrangedtow forni a continuation of said of the drum 1, while i? i ofi trough. In the outer end of hopper 17 is a bearing forthe shaft 2. The'hopper is provided with an outlet spout 19 in its bottom,
' .which spout may be opened and closed by operating the slidable plate 20. The lower end of spout 19 is provided with a flange to Vwhich a bag B may be secured to receive the n'iateral discharged from spout 19.V A wire screen, 21 is placed in the hopper 17 over Y vthe conveyor screw 18 to prevent refuse from entering the container when material is being fed into same.
The operation of the mixer is as follows The pulleys 9 and 10 are connected to a suitable source of power by meansfof belts, one being a cross beltto rotate shaft 2 in opposite directions. IVhen the operator throws the clutch 12-into contact with the hub of one pulley,; the shaft 2 and screw 18 revolve in the same direct-ionl as that pulley, and the material to be mixed is fed into the d rum 1, through the hopper 17, the drum 1 being revolved in the opposite direction by means of sprocket 15, chain 16, sprocket 7, spur pinion 6,7andgear 5. As the screw 18 feeds the material into the drum 1, the same overows trough 22 and falls into the interior of the drum and is picked up and mixed by the plates 23, the vanes 24'feeding the material toward the hopper end of the container. Whenthe mixing is completed, the clutch 12 is thrown to lock against the hub of the other pulleyand the rotation of shaft 2 and drum 1 is reversed, and the mixed material in trough 22 is then fed towar-d the hopper end,
p and out through .the hopper -discharge spout scopeof the claims.
I claim l i 1. A mixing machine comprlsmg a trough;
Y a conveyor screw in said trough; a rotatable drum coaxial with and enclosing the trough; a plurality oflongitudinal plates in the 'drum exterior to the trough, said platesbeing disposed radially of the drum; angularly dis- Y l vposed vanes on said plates; andclutch means for rotating the drum and screw in opposite directions. l
` 2..In a'machine as set forth in claim 1, a hopper at one endrof the drum; and said conveyor 1 screw extending into the hopper;
Y a discharge spout at the bottom ofthe hopper`;.and meansat-the end of said lspout for f attaching a receptacle thereto.
l 3. A mixing machine comprising an open means for rotating the shaft in opposite directions; and means on the shaft for rotating the drum.
4. In a machine as set forth in claim 3, a hopper at one end of the drum; said conveyor screw extending into the hopper; a discharge spout at the bottom of the hopper; means at the end of said spout for attaching a receptacle thereto; and a slidable plate for closing the spout.
5. A mixing machine comprising a frame; a shaftjournaled on the frame; a conveyor screw on said shaft; an open trough for said screw; a rotatable drum journaled on said shaft and enclosing the trough; a plurality of longitudinal plates in the drum exterior to the trough, said plates being disposed radially ofthe drum; angularly disposed parallel vanes on said plates slantng towards one end of the drum; means on the shaft for rotating the drum in the opposite direction to the shaft; and clutch means for rotating thc shaft in opposite directions.
6. In a machine as set forth in claim 5, a hopper at one end of the drum; said conveyor screw extending into thehopper; a screen in the hopper above the conveyor screw; a discharge spout in the bottom of the hopper; means at the end of said spout for attaching a receptacle thereto; and a slidable plate for closing the spout.
