Patented Dec. 10, 1929 UNITED STATES P TENT OFF/ICE ELMER J. s. swANsoN, or ERIE, PENNSYLVANIAQASSIGNQR TO ERIE M LLEA LE IRON COMPANY, or ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION, or PEN SYLVANIA ATTACHING DEVICE FOR OUTLET BOXES Application filed March 28, 1927. Serial No. 178,830.
Outlet boxes are provided with equipment which is directly attached to the box. The
present invention is directed to the attaching devices by which this is accomplished. Cerj tain kinds of such equipment extend into the box and where this is soit is necessary that the attaching device be so formed as to clear this equipment. The present invention is particularly designed to take care of this condition. Features and details of the invention will appear from the specification and claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a side elevation, partly broken away to better show construction.
Fig. 2 is a plan view. i
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of one of the attach ing plates.
Fig. 5 is a sideelevation of the same.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a companion attaching plate.
Fig.7 is a side elevation of the same.
1 marks an outlet box, and 2 conduits leading to the box, the conduits leading into conduit openings 3 in the ordinary manner. The box has an opening 4: at one side which is surrounded by an annular securing flange 5. The flange is provided with a radial slot 6 at one side. These parts are of ordinary construction.
Attaching plates 7 and 8 are attached to and extend under the flange 5/ The plate 8 has extensions 9 and 10 which are adapted to extend under the flange and are substantially in alinement with a U-bend formed with sides 11 and a bottom portion 12. An oft-set 13 is arranged midway in the bottom portion and this is provided with an opening 1 1. The late is also provided with a slot 15 which is in the bottom portion and this slot is extended and a similar slot 16 provided in the extension 9. Screw-threaded openings 17 are arranged at the opposite end of the bottom por tion and also a screw-threaded opening 18 in the extension 10. The companion plate 7 is provided with extensions 19 and 20 hav ing uprights 21 and a bottom portion 22. The
plate is adapted to extend through the opening 14 so that the plates are telescopically connected. The plate 7 has a slot 23 in the bottom portion and thisis continued and a similar slot124lis arranged in the extension 20. Screw1threads 25 are arranged in the bottom portionand at the opposite end from the slot 23 and a screw thread 26 in the extension 19. The screw threads with the parts assembled as shown in Fig. 3 aredirectly under the slots and the sliding connection permits otthese plates being movedjrelatively to each other. 1 Screws 2? are adapted to. extend through the equipment, or device which is to .beattached, this being shown in dash lines. These screws areladaptedto extend through the slots and into the screwthreaded openings under the slots.
What I claimas newjis V 1. In an attaching device for outlet boxes, the combination oi two telescopically connected plates, one end of each plate being superimposed by the other and superimposing the other plate at the opposite end, each plate having its superimposing end slotted and the end being superimposed provided with a screw-threaded opening, the screwthreaded openings being below the slots, said plates having their central parts in the form of U-bends and the ends having the slots and screw-threaded openings extending laterally from the U-bends.
2. In an attaching device for outlet boxes, the combination of two plates, one plate passing through the other, and one end of each plate being superimposed by the other and superimposing the other plate at the opposite end, each plate having its superimposing end Slotted and the end which is superimposed provided with a screw-threaded opening, the screw-threaded openings being below the slots, said plates having their central parts in the-form of U-bends and the ends having the slots and screw-threaded openings extending laterally from the U-bends.
3. In an attaching device for outlet boxes, the combination of two telescopically connected plates, one end of each plate being superimposed by the other and superimposing the other plate at the opposite end, each plate having its superimposing end slotted and the end being superimposed provided with a screw-threaded opening, the screwthreaded openings being below the slots, said plates having their central parts in the form of-U-bends and the ends having the slots and screw-threaded openings extending laterally from the U-bends, each plate having a superimposing portion at the bottom of the U and a superimposed portion at the bottom of the U, the superimposing portions of the plates at the bottom of the U being provided with slots and the superimposed portions of the plates at the bottom of the U being provided with screw threaded openings, the lastmentioned screw-threaded openings being below the slots in the plates at the bottom of the U.
4. The combination of an outlet box having an annular flange and an attaching device under the flange comprising two telescopically connected plates, one end of each plate being superimposed by the other and superimposing the other plate at the opposite end, each plate having its superimposing end slotted and the end being superimposed provided with a screw-threaded opening, the screwthreaded openings being below the slots, said plates having their central parts in the form of U-bends and the ends having the slots and screw-threaded openings extending laterally from the U-bends.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ELMER J. S. SWA'NSON.
