Description

Dec. 10, 1929. w. c. HENRY 1,738,900
BELT BUCKLE Filed May 9, 1929 ZJ I7 3f 23 Il ATTORNEYS.
Patented Dec. 10, 1929 PAT WILLIAM C. HENRY, F BELLEFONTE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB, OF ONE-I-IALF `lO WILLIAM JOHNSON, OF BELLEEONTE, IJEJ'NSYL'VANIA BELT :BUCKLE Application filed May 9,
rlhis invention appertains to wearing apparel and more particularly to novel buckle for connecting the terminals of a belt t0- gether.
@ne of the primary objects of my inven- 'ion is to provide a belt buckle in which the opposite ends of the belt can be folded back on each side of the belt buckle to provide a neat appearing belt. s
Another important object of my invention is the provision of a belt buckle having a pair of friction rollers at the ends thereof around which the terminals of the belt are folded, with novel locking levers pivoted to the transverse center of the buckle body for holding the folded portions of the belt against said rollers and thereby prevent the accidental disengagement of the belt ends from the buckle.
A further salient object of my invention is the provision of loops carried by the body portion of the belt for receiving the ends of the belt after the same have been folded over the body portion of the belt and aroundthe rollers, the entire belt forming an exceptionally simple and attractive appearance.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved belt buckle of the above cl'iaracter, which will be durable and efficient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
l/With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a belt showing my improved belt buckle;
`Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the belt showing my improved buckle in use;
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of a fragment of the belt showing my improved belt buckle;
Figure l is a longitudinal section taken on the line lr-1l of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail section taken through one end of the belt buckle showing one of the locking levers in locked position for engaging a belt end and for holding the same in locking engagement with the serrated roller, and
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of the improved buckle removed from the belt, showing the rear thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicL tes my iniproved belt buckle and B a belt with which the same can be associated.
The belt B is of substantially conventional construction and is formed of flexible or pliable material such as light leather, canvas or the like, and has adjacent to each end thereof loops 10 and 11 which encircle the belt transversely. These loops are confined against longitudinal movement on the belt by retaining straps 12 which can be riveted as at 13 to the body of the belt or otherwise secured thereto.
My improved buckle A comprises a body 15 including a front iniperforate plate 16 and top and bottom inwardly directed lateral side walls or flanges 17 andy 18. The body portion 15 of the belt buckle can be made of precious metal if so desired and can be ornamented in any preferred way. Adjacent to the opposite ends of the belt buckle and in rear of the front plate 16 I arrange rollers lil and 20. These rollers have their outer faces serrated, and extend transversely of the front plate 16 in slightly spaced relation thereto and have their terminals provided with pinties which are extendedthrough suitable openings in the top and bottom flanges 17 and 18. These pintles can be offset as at 2l in order to prevent displacement of the rollers from the body of the belt buckle. Arranged at the transverse center of the belt buckle body and between the rollers 19 and 20, I provide a hinge pin 22 which also has its terminals eirtended through the flanges 17 and 18 and olf-- set as at 23 to prevent displacement thereof from the body. This pivot pin 22 forms means for supporting the hinged locking levers 2d and 25, the inner ends of which are provided with hinge barrels 26 for receiving the said pivot pin. The locking levers 2li and terminals of the belt B are threaded between the rear face of the plate 16 and the rollers 19 and 2O and over the rollers, after which the i terminals are brought over the belt and inserted between the loops and 11. The locking levers 24 and 25 are now swung on the pivot. pin 22 against the belt and the 'front face of the belt buckle, bringing the locking jaws 27 into biting vContact with the belt and locking the belt between the levers and `the serrated rollers 19 and 20.
This forms an ellicient means for holding the belt terminals in place and movement of the belt relative to the buckle is precluded.
Y Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention. Y
The leather is to be dressed and linisbed on both sides, so that when the ends of the belt are looped over or around 19 and 20, the
^ inner side of the leather will correspond with the outer side.,
VVhatIA claim as new is:
Y 1. A belt buckle comprising a body includingv a front plate and longitudinally extending upper and lower flanges, serrated rollers arranged between the flanges-in the rear of vthe front. plate and adjacent to the terminals thereof, a transversely extending centrally disposed pivot pin carriedK by the flanges in rear of said. frontplate,and` locking .levers hingedly carried by said pivot pin and provided with oli'set lockingjaws for .confining the terminals of a belt between the same and v 'Y '2. A belt buckle comprising a body including a front plate and inwardly directed upper and lower longitudinal flanges formed on the Y vsaidfront plate, serrated rollers carried by the `flanges and arranged in the rear of. the front plate adjacent to the opposite ends thereof, `a transversely extending pivot pin secured to the flanges at a point'. equifdistant from said rollers, locking rlevers rockably mounted. on sa1d'p1n including manipulating y handles an oli'set jaw facesysaid facesbeing' serrated Vfor engagement with the terminals ofthe belt trained. oversaidv rollers, `the han dles'being oppositely inclined for. engaging the belt on each'side ol said rollers.
3. A belt bucklecomprisinga front plate and rearwardly directed upper and lower A flanges, belt strapterminalf receiving rollers carriedby .sadz flanges in. rear ofv the front vplateadjacent tothe opposite ends thereof,
and locking levers hinged at the transverse center in the rear of the liront plate for lock ing engagement with the belt strap terminals at the portions thereof trained over said rollers.
In testimony whereoiV I allix my signature.
WILLIAM C. HENRY.
