' PAPER BOX OR THE LIKE I Filed May 51, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Dec. 10, 1929 SAMUEL BElEt-GS'JUEIN, F MIDDLE'IOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOE TO THE INTERSTATE FOLDING- BOK CUMPANY, 0F JMIDDLETOVIII, OHIO rennin. BOX on THE LIKE Application filed May 31,
This invention relates to improvements in paper boxes, having particular reference to boxes adapted to be arranged for displaying their contents.
The inanufacturefis profit in paper boxes is generally so small that savings in the character and amount of raw material used, and in time and labor costs in manufacturing the boxes is vitally important. Any possible rofits can be made only by giving strict attention to these factors of production.
'lhe objects attained in the present invention consist in a. paper box of novel construction in which the amount of material required is reduced to the minimum without weakening the structure of the box; in which box board finished on one face only may be used without impairing the quality of the box for :uugearance; in which all printing for both .he lid and body of the box is on the same face of the paper, and in which the opposite sections are arranged in a novel manner one relative to the other for displaying the con ents of the box.
The novel construction consists in assembling the opposite sections of the box inverseiy one relative to the other, the finished side of the material. being turned inward in one section and outward in the other section, and the joints of the section that has the finished side of the material turned inward being formed outward and of the other section inward. this the box is arranged for displaying the contents, the section that is finished inward is placed telescopically in the section that is finished outward thus presenting finisaed faces both inward and outward, the inner section being adapted to be raised at one end and supported frictionally at an angle in the outer section for displaying the contents to better advantage.
ln the accompanying drawings which serve for illustrating the invention as practired with one type of box:
Figs. 1 and 2 are views of the blanks for the opposite sections of the box, illustrating the manner of cutting the blanks from the sheets for minimizing the waste of material;
3 is a sectional view of the outer sec tion of the box;
1928. Serial No. 282,018.
Fig. 4: is a sectional View of the inner section of the box;
Fig. 5 is a view of the box assembled one section with the other;
Fig. 6 is a view of the box arranged telescopically one section with the other for displaying the contents.
The box blank as shown in Fig. 1 for the outer section of the box consists of the top portion 1, sides 2, ends 3, end corner flaps l, and reinforcing scaling flaps 5, and corner reinforcing sealing flaps 6.
The bianlr for the inner section of the box consists of the bottom portion 7, sides 8, ends 9, end corner flaps l0, corner reinforcing sealflaps 11 and advertisement tab 12.
As shown in 3 the outer section of the box has the finished side of the material turned outward, the section being formed by folding the sealing strips 5 over the upper edges of the end flaps 4L and securing the same adhesively to the inner face of flaps a, the flaps 6 being joined in like manner to the inner faces of the side walls 2, thus serving to reinforce the end and corner constructions.
The inner section of the box, as shown in Fig. 4 has the finished side of the material turned inward, the section being formed by joining the end corner flaps 10 outwardly over the end walls 9, the corner reinforcing fiaps 11 being joined to the inner faces of the side walls 8 thus serving to reinforce the corners. lVhen the box sections are assen'ibled one with the other, the advertisement tab 12 is extended fiat over the contents of the box, the flap being self-sustaining in raised position as the box is arranged for displaying the contents.
It will be apparent that the box arranged for displaying the contents, as shown in Fig. 6, will present the finished side of the paper on all exposed inward and outward faces, except the small portion of the inner section raised above the upper edge of the outer section; also that the faces of both sections broken by seams or joints will not be exposed, thus having the eifeet'in a cheaply constructed box of presenting only finished unmarred surfaces on all exposed faces, the improved box being equal, even superior in 5 ture.
this respect to boxes made of box board finished on both faces and of more costly construction. All printing also will be on one side only of the material for both sections of the box. Any printing on the face 1 of the outer section of the box will apply to the box or contents as the box is closed with face 1 turnedupward. As the box is ar ranged for displaying its contents, face 1 will be at the bottom of the box.
It-will be apparent that variously constructed boxes can be constructed and arranged in the manner herein described havv material inside and outside the box with r ing particular reference .to the inverse arrangement of the finished side of the paper 1n the opposite sections of the box, and the inverse formation of the joints in one section of the box for the purposes herein set forth to which the invention relates irrespective ofother structural features of the box.
I claim as my invention: 1; Apaper box consisting ofopposite sections arranged telescopically one of the other, eachconstructed of material finished on one side only, the outer section having the finished side of the material turned outward, the inner section having the finished side of the material'turned inward, and the inner section having its joints formed out- Wardly, 1nverse to the formation of the ,joints of the outer section thereby presenting unbroken sinner faces ofsaid section, said sections being adapted as the box is arranged for displaying its contents for placing the inner section into the outer section for presenting the finished side of the faces of both sections broken by joints unexposed.
2, 'A paper boxconsisting of opposite sections arranged telescopically one of the other, each constructed of material finished on one side only, one of said sections having the finished and printed side of the material.
turned outward and the other section having the finished side turned inward, said sections] being adapted as the box is arranged .for displaying its contents'for placing one section? into the other section thus present- V ingfinished faces'of the material inwardly 'and outwardly with the unfinished faces of tlieinaterial disposed oppositely one of another and concealed.
ln testiinony whereof, I affix my signa- SAMUEL BERGSTEIN. V v
