UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIHU R. PETIIT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELECTRO-M AGNETIC DENTAL- ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,864, dated February 22, 1876; application filed January22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELIEIU ROBERTS PETIIT, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Armature and Magnetic Engine Attachment to Dental Engines, of which the following is a specifica tion:
My invention consists of a simple contrivance for coupling a magnetic engine to a dental engine, for use instead ofthe footpower for driving it, using the armaturewheel of the magnetic engine in the place of the driving-wheel of the foot-power for running the band, and mounting the standard of the dental engine on the shaft of the armature for its support.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved magnetic and dental engine contrivance, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the crotched standard of the dental engine, which I cut in two 'ust below the bearings B, for the shaft 0 the driving-pulley, which is worked by the foot-trcadle, and fits on a shaft, (J, which I mount in bearings D of standards E, which I secure to the projecting ends of the armature-shaft F, with extensions G to the base, or nearly, connecting with spring H, or any other suitable contrivance to keep the standard upright, but at the same time allowing it to vibrate for swinging the top forward and backward, as may sometimes be required in the manipulation of the tools. This brings the shaft-pulley I directly over the armature-wheel J, so that it may serve for the band-wheel, for which I make V notches'in the armature for a round band, K, and flat bottomed notches for a flat band.
In making new machines for connection with a magnetic engine, the crotch L of the standardvwill be extended so as to serve for the standards E, and lit the bearings D on the' armature-shaft, thus dispensing with the shaft 0, which is only necessary in theconnection of dental engines made for foot-power.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The combination ofa magnetic engine with the standard of a dental engine, in the manner described, whereby the armature-wheel of the magnetic engine lines with the pulley of the dental engine, and at the same time the armature-shaft serves for the support of the dental engine standard, substantially as specitied.
2. Also, the armature-wheel of a magnetic engine, provided with a band-groove to utilize it for driving by a band running on it,
substantially as specified.
