My present invention relates to a joint for metallic members which is particularly adapted for'locking together metal sheets in the formation of a tin or metal roof.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a joint of the type described which will be water-tight, Which will permit of the sheets being secured to the wooden roof sheathing without the securing means passing through the sheets themselves, and which provides a'lock for the abutting parts.
Other important objects of the invention are the provision of a construction which will permit ready separation of the parts should 5 the same be necessary without mutilation of the metal strips so that they may be used again.
To this end the invention contemplates a metal joint comprising two longitudinally extending elements such as the metal sheets )commonly used in theformation of a tin or metal roof. One of these elements isa wall portion upstanding from its main body, the wall port-ion having its marginal extremity bent or returned toward the body portion. 5 This bend may be either sharp or arcuate. Lying adjacent the first mentioned element is a second element of like character also having an upstanding wall lying adjacent the upstanding wall of the first mentioned ele- 3 ment and having its marginal portion bent over the margin of the first mentioned element. An ofiset lock is provided in the marginal portion of the second element which resiliently engages the raw or actual edge 5 of the underlying margin. Underlying the main body of the second mentioned element is a cleat or fastening means adapted to be nailed to the wooden sheathing of the roof, which cleat has a bent portion overlying the i margin of the first mentioned element, thus securing this member to the roof. The fact that the second mentioned element is locked to the first element thus fastens both elements to the roof without any securing means pene- 3 trating either of the elements- The invention further consists in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a device embodying the preferred form of my invention.

Fig. 4 is an end view of a modification of Fig. 1.
Referring now with particularity to the drawings, 1 have shown a metallic element A of elongated form which consists of a main body 1 and a wall 2 upstanding therefrom. The top of the wall 2 is provided with a marginal portion 3 bent or returned toward the main body. The body 1 is adapted to lie upon the ordinary roof sheathing. A cleat conv sisting of a fiat portion 5 with a wall 6 and hook shaped portion 7 is provided, the hook overlying the bend between margin and upstanding wall of the element A, the fiatbase 5 of the cleat being adapted to be nailed to the roof sheathing as by nail 8, thussecuring the element A to the roof. Between the extreme edge of the portion 11 and the bend at the top of the wall 10 an offset lock 12 is provided which when the element B is pressed down over the mar- V ginal portion 3 snaps beneath the raw or extreme edge 13 of the margin 3. In this Way the element A is secured to the roof by means of the fastening means passing through the cleat and the element B is then secured to the element A so that both members are held tions corresponding to the wall and margin 10 and 11 atits opposite lateral'edge.
This invention is not limited to the form of joint herein shown, in which the covering wall is formedas a part of one of the sections which said is in the form of a cap, the application upon patent issued being a divis on or the present application.
