This invention relates to multi-color rotary printing machines and is a division of an application filed Dec. 30, 1926, Ser. No. 158,052. a
The main object and feature of the invention is the production ofa machine, of the character indicated, in which many different products can be obtained in a variety of ways so that the full capacity of the machine may at all times be utilized, if desired. The ma chine can be'used both for regular newspaper printing and for tabloid printing or for a combination of the two. Fig. 11 is a diagrammatic side 'view of an adjustment of angle, bars whereby a web may be printed and claimed. This application is filed to cover specifically that grouping in which the cylinders are arranged end to end.
It would be a work of supererogation to point out in detail here the various web runs that maybe obtained in connection with the web or webs that pass from the couples of one set to the couples of the other set, as this is fully described in the said prior application. I shall therefore primarily deal with the grouping of printing couples into two sets plus additional'printing couples which latter may be arranged in one or two sets. In other words: I shall describe the relation of two groups of sets and shall treat of the re lation between the two sets of printing couples only so far as it may be necessary to clearly comprehend the invention claimed.
In ig. 1 is shown a plurality of printing couples, each couple including an impression and a design cylinder, said-couplesarranged in two sets spaced, with a plurality of conples in each set. The character of the printc'ouples is immaterial, so long as they are rotary members, and thedesign cylinder may be a member that prints bythe ofiset method or an ordinary plate cylinder. The-two sets of printing couples are designated respective- 'ly-by Aand B, and they'are desi nated'as a group either by AA or BB (Fig.2 That is.
mg couples are arranged in two sets and one shown in Fig. 1 would be an exact duplicate of the latter, but it will be understood respectively vary. The impression cylinders of the cou- 'nection with any of the others.
ples in set A are denoted by a to a inclusive and the complementary design cylinders are indicated by a, a, a, a, a, and, a. The corresponding cylinders in set B are marked 7) and corresponding exponents.
' Suitable inking mechanism C is associated with each printing couple, and; in accordance with standard practlce, such lnkmg mechanism is movable toward and away from the design cylinders. In the present form shown the impression cylinders of both sets face in the same direction, a feature which is of advantage under certain conditions. Any suitable means may be used to drive the printing couples. The cylinders of each couple are geared together and power may be applied either to the design cylinderor to the impression cylinder and the other member of the couple driven from its companion cylinder. In either event the impression cylinders of one set are preferably driven in a direction oppositeto that of the impression cylinders of the other set. In the present instance the impression cylinders are driven direct from the two upright shafts D and D by means of suitable bevel gears d and d; and gears (Z may be slidable on the upright shafts in a manner well understood so as to disconnect any printing couple from the driving means without disturbing the driving con- Suitable means for reversing the direction of rotation of some of the couples, are rovided, this being accomplished by slida le gears (Z on shaft D. Shafts D and D are driven from any suitable source such as power shaft D by suitable means such as bevel gears d.
E is a stand for web rolls and F, with exponents, indicates folders of suitable character. G, with exponents, indicates web turner bars adjacent set A and the folders, and H,
with exponents, indicates web turner bars. adJacent some of the printing couples of set B. Slitter's are indicated at K and K. In addition, there are suitable 'uide bars etc. which need not bedescribed 1n detail. The cylinders of the machine are preferably double-width, that is to say: four ordinary newspaper pages wide; When used for tabloid printing the pages run lengthwise of the cylinders. It is of course possible to feed four half-width webs abreast, but preferably a double width web is fed which may be slitted before printing and again after printing but before folding.-
As previously indicated, the numerous web couples of the other set to be perfected in one or more colors. By variably adjusting angle bars H and controlling the direction of rotation of the printing couples of set B it is possible to reverse the web and to print it twice'by means of the same couple or by two couples of the same set in different colors or to print and perfect said web by the same couple or by different couples in. the same set. In other words, a web can be transferred from one end of a printing couple to another and variabl associated with the product from said 0t er end. So likewise, by means, of angle bars G the products from opposite sides of the machine can be variably associated For instance the turner bars (H) may be arranged as shown in Fig. 8 where a web (single width) after being printed at one end of the machine by one couple can be led around uide bar h, over turner bar h, over guide iiar h over turner bar h, over guide bar it, and then led to another printing couple at the same end of the machine to have its other side printed. Or, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, a-single width web coming from a roll would be led down between the cylinders, of a couple at the far end of the press and could then pass around guide bar It, angle bars h and h and guide bars h it and h thereby bringing the web to the near end of the machine with the same side up so that the same couple would print the web in two colors on one side. The web would thereafter be led to another couple and be perfected. In Figs. 11 and 12 a single width web is led from a roll down between the cylinders of a couple at the far end of the machine, thence to guide bar h, over angle bar it, guide bar h,
angle bar h and over guide bars h", h and k down between the cylinders of the same couple but at the near side of the machine and with the web inverted so that the same couple would both print and perfect the web.
Web turners G may be variously constructed and adjusted. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, each group of couples AA and BB is provided with four folders F, F F F and F F F and F and with three sets of angle bars, each set of angle bars consisting of three bars 9 g and 9. By means of these angle bars and suitable guide bars any web can be given a quarter turn and be brought in line with any folder so that the products of the sets of each group can be variably associated, and the products of the two groups can be delivered separately or together or can be combined into assemblies of the two groups are shown as facing in the opposite direction; it will be observed that in Fig. 4 a double width web is shown as being turned over angle bar 9 in which case it would be .slitted as is customary before reaching a set of folders.
The two folders comprising a set need not be close together as in Figs. 2 and 4 but may be spaced apart as shown in Figs. 4, 6 and 7, but in that event the arrangement of the angle bars would be slightly different in that there would preferably be four short angle bars 9 g, g -and in each of the three sets. In Fig. 7 there is further indicated conventional means as guide bars 9 for cross-associating the products of various folders so that the webs can be associated before or after folding. vSo far as the Web path through the two sets of a group are concerned it will be seen that each of the superposed webs travels in a substantially U-shape path, that each web crosses but once between sets l8 and A and that one or more superposed webs can be printed and perfected in one or more colors without reversal of the web or-webs between sets. The result is to make the space between A and B less crowded and therefore more accessible than is the case where a web is caused to travel back and forth a number of times between the sets. It will (be found that these features are characteristic of all the web runs, though it is not thereby intended to convey that the invention is necessarily limited thereto.
