Patented Dec. 3, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE J'OSEYH E. BATIE, OI DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO KELSEY-HAYES WHEEL CORPORATION, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK METHOD OF FORMING BRAKE DRUMS Application filed October 5, 1925. Serial No. 60,571.
The invention relates to brake drums and has particular reference .to brake drums which are designed to be formed from steel having high carbon percentage. The invention has for its main object the improved manufacture of a brake drum by means of which material drawing of the metal is avoided. Other objects of the invention reside in the novel features and sequence of steps as more fully hereinafter set forth.

As shown in Figure 1, 1 is a blank preferably formed of sheet steel having a high carbon percentage, this blank being of indeterminate length. The first step in the operation of forming the brake drum consists in fashioning this blank to form the transversely extending flanges 2 and 3, as shown in Figures 2 and 3. The fashioned blank is then sheared to substantially predetermined length and hooped, as shown in Figure 4, to make from the flanges 2 and 3 respectively, the cylindrical brake flange and the web. As shown in Figure 5, the adjacent ends of the hooped blank are then welded at 4 after which the weld flash is suitably trimmed and the hooped and welded blank then sized to predetermined diameter. This sizing step is preferably accomplished by expanding, by means of which the strength of the Weld is decided. The fol lowing step consists in punching the web of the brake drum to form the angularly spaced holes 5 through which the means for securing the brake drum to the wheel body or a disk separate from the wheel body may pass.
If desired the brake drum can be secured to the disk 6 as shown in Figure 7, this disk being separate from the vehicle wheel body and having the central opening 7 for sleeving over the wheel hub. The disk 6 in this instance is preferabl provided with a concentric annular shou der 8 for engagement with the inner edge of the brake drum web to thereby position the brake drum.
