This invention is an improvement on the apparatus of my Patent l lo. l.,6l3,(359, issued January 11, 199.7, tor dental apparatus.
The objects of the invention are,
First, to improve the head gear and ear plate structure.
Second, to provide the apparatus with iinproved adjusting means.
Third, to provide an improved chin rest structure.
Fourth, to provide improved take-up means and gauge for the side straps.
lFi'lEth to provide improved gauge means for checking the position of the jaws with the nose.
Objects relating to details of construction will appear from the detailed description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims. A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is detail perspective view of my apparatus, the position of the human head and tace being indicated in dotted lines with the jaws in open position and the nose gauge thrown down out oi use.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the jaws in closed position and the nose gauge in place.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan of the structure when resting on a table, one take-up structure and case bein in section on line 33 of Fig.
Fig. 4t is an enlarged detail sectional view on line l l of Figs. 3 and 5, through one ot the take-up structures.
5 is a detail plan view of the under side one of the take-up spring cases, the knob being partially broken away showing details of the escapement structure.
The parts of the drawin will be identified by numerals of reference which are the same in all views.
1 is one of the pair of ear plates which are symmetrical duplicates on each side of the head. These ear plates are connected by top head strap 2 pivoted at 21 to the ear plates at each side. and by a bottom head strap 3 secured to the ear plates at pivot 31 at the back of the ear plates. 8 is the chin rest hollowed at 81 to con torm to the shape of the average chin. The takeup spring cases pivotally support the chin rest between them by the shouldered screws 812 (see Fig. 3). On the chin rest is a forwaroly-projeating lug 83 on which is pivoted the nose gauge structure comprising; the adjustable arm Site which is pivoted the ad- 'ustable gauge finger 91 with small lznob at the end. This is central of the chin and can be swung to a position under the nose r in dicated in Fig. 2, when the bite check has been properly adjusted.
To use my in'u iroved bite check apparatus, it is adjusted on the head ol the patient by proper adjustment the head straps 2 and 8, so that the pivot 41 is located as nearly opposite the pivot point of the mandibular joint as possible. The chin rest is then brought up to the chin and linal adjustment is accomplished by manipulation of the escapement dog 7 by the projecting linger 71. The patient works his jaw against the tension and is allowed to come to res. T e slides 4-2 of the strap l yield and eventually when the patient has come to rest are adjusted against the spring ease and the sprir locked. The nose gauge is then properly justed, and the operat hnows S'dlit antial the correct position of bite.

Of course the apparatus will operate fairly well without the nose gauge, but it is advantageous to have it. The apparatus might be operated Without the swivels on the chin rest but much more perfect work is accomplished with those means. Relative adjustment secured by manipulation of the escape-c ment dogs is highly desirable in securing most perfect and even adjustment of the instrument, but of course the escapement can be omitted, losing this advantage.
I desire to claim the invention specifically as illustrated as well as broadly and also generally as to its separate features, as pointed out in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' 1. In adentists bite check apparatus, the combination of a head gear comprising adjustable top and back head straps, hookshaped ear plates with a pivot capable of adjustment to positions opposite the mandibular joint, straps and spring take-up devices at each side connected at the pivots to said ear plates, a chin rest with swivel connections to the said take-up devices at each side, sliding gauge devices on the take-up straps, a screw to set the take-up spring devices, escapement dogs to adjust the tension of the spring and regulate the take-up device, and a nose gauge comprising pivoted arms pivoted centrally to the chin rest and adjustable frictionally to proper relation with the nose, all coacting as described.

In a dentists bite check apparatus, the combination of a head gear comprising adjustable top and back head straps, hookshaped ear plates with a pivot capable of adjustment to positions opposite the mandibular joint, straps and spring take-up devices at each side connected at the pivots to said ear plates, a chin rest with connection to the said take-up devices at each side, and means to set the take-up spring devices, as specified.
