My invention relates to new and useful improvements in spotlights and more p articularly to a mounting for the operating rod of a spotlight similar to that disclosed in my copending application filed October 6, 1925, Serial No. 60,857 in which t-he light is adapted to be swung horizontally or vertically by means of a single operating or co-ntrol rod.
The principal object of the invention resides in t-he provision of a mounting` for the operating rod in which the rod may be both slidably and rotatably supported.
Another object ot the invention consists 1n forming the mounting in such a manner that the operating rod may be made up of a plurality of sections which may be adjusted at various angles one with respect to the other.
Vith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, as they now appear to me, it will be understood that such changes may be J0 made as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawings 1 indicates the chassis, of an automobile, supported by the wheels 2, 3 indicates the engine of ordinary or wellknown construction, 4t the water jacket, 5 the dash, and 6 the instrument board. 'Ihe spotlight shown at 7 is secured to the thimble 8 around the filling opening of the water jacket by means of the clamps 9.
The light is mounted for both horizontal and vertical swinging movement as disclosed in my copending application above identiiied and is operated through means of a rod which extends from the light to a position within Serial No. 145,826.

The operating rod is formed of a plurality of sections and the sections are connected by means of universal joints whereby they may be angularly adjusted yone with respect to the other. At'10 I have shown a relatively short section of rod connected at one vend to the light and at its o-pposite end is connected by means of the universal joint 11 to the rod section 12. The section 10 is preferably arranged horizontally inl front of the water jacket or radiator and the section 12 extends through the space between the top ot the water jacket and the radiator and preferably is positioned as near horizontally as possible. Secured to the radiator shell flange 13 by means Vof the screws 14 or other suitable fastenings is the plate 15 having a socket formed adjacent its upper end and supporting the ball 16 having a passage therein and through which the rod section 12 extends. The plate 15 has the ears 17 formed on its side edges and through which the fastenings 14 are passed.
Secured to the dash 5 by means of the bolts 18 or other suitable fastenings is a plate 19 formed with a socket to receive the ball 20 having a passage therethrough. Secured to the instrument board 6 by means of the bolts 21 or other suitable fastenings is a plate 22 .having a socket formed therein for the reception ot' the ball 23 which has a passage therethrough. A rod section 24 extends through the passages kin the balls 20 and 23. Secured to the outer end of this rod section 24 is a handhold 25 within easy reach of the operator of the vehicle. A rod section 26 1s connected to the inner end of the section 24 by means oi the universal joint 27 and at the opposite end is connected to the rod section 12 by means of the universal joint 28.
From the above detail description it will be noted that I have provided a novel form of mounting for the sections ofthe operating rod of the spotlight. The rod sections are supported or mounted in the ball and socket bearings so that one section may be arranged at an angle relative to the other and at the same time the sections are mounted for either slidable or rotatable movement for swinging the spotlight either in a horizontal or a vertical direction as may be desired. It can be appreciated that in various types or makes of automobiles that the rod sections will have to be mounted in slightly different positions or at various angles to get around theoperating mechanism of the engine, etc. In'the drawings the rod section l2 is shown arranged at a slight angle and the ball^16 may be adjusted in the socket of the plate l5 to accommodate for this angle. The bearings or mountings shown connected to the'dashw and to the instrument board may be either in a direct longitudinal line .or atan angle one with respect to the other so that the rod section A24 :may either `extend perfectly straight or at an angle. It will alsobeapprecia-ted fthat when 4 the sections ane 4slid longitudinally inthe bearings that they will assume slightly different angles andthe ball Vand socket bearings accommodate ythese different angles.
