ELIZABETH S.v WELDON.
. BREAST-PAD. l No. 173.698. Patented Feb. 15, 1876.
N-FEI'ERS. FNDTdUTROGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D. C-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ELIZABETH S. WELDON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREAST-PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l'73,698, dated February 15, 1876 application filed October 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH STOWELL WELDON, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J aconet Pads for Ladies, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to certain improvements in jaconet pads, or pads for the bust or breasts of ladies; and its object is to provide a pad in which the filling or packing may be readily and conveniently removed, for the purpose of cleaning or rearranging the same, without ripping the pockets or sacks which hold it. I
In all pads of this class, as heretofore constructed, a great objection has been experienced, owing to the fact that the packing or filling after a while becomes impaired, and after the pad has been used for some time becomes entirely useless, owing to. the absorption of perspiration, and the matting or packing together of the filling, which settles into the lower corners of the pockets or sacks, forming a hard lump or knot, which is so extremely uncomfortable to the wearer that the pad has to be discarded, or entirely made over.
My invention is designed to obviate all these objections, and furnish a pad in which the packing maybe readily removed, for washing or for rearranging the same, without ripping or otherwise injuring the pockets or sacks which contain it; and it consists in constructing the pockets or sacks with an opening in front, covered and secured by a flap or wing, secured by means of a button or other equivalent device, as will be hereinafter fully de scribed. V
The drawing shows my improved pad in po sition upon the human figure.
AA represent the pockets or sacks, made of linen or other suitable textile fabric, of such convenient-shape as may be desirable, and provided with tapes B B, to be passed over the arms for the purpose of securing the same to the body, in the usual manner. Said pockets or sacks are provided with openings a in front, which are covered by flaps b, secured ever the same by means of a button, hook, or other suitable device, and are joined or secured together in any suitable manner, so as to fall in proper position over the bust or breasts.
In the drawing I have shown the two pockets formed of one piece of linen or textile fabric, so stitched or sewed that each pocket will fall in its proper place over the breast, leaving a connecting portion, 0, between the two, which will fall into the space between the breasts, as shown. To the lower part of this connecting-piece I attach a loop or eye, D, for the purpose of fastening the pad to the corset or other portion of the dress, to hold it in the proper position upon the figure.
In order that the connecting-piece C may properly set into the space between the breasts and take to the configuration of the person wearing the pad, I secure a whalebone or slip, E, therein, as shown.
It is obvious that my invention may be applied to all pads which are to be filled with any kind of fibrous material, such as curled hair, 850., and that it can be made in any of the styles, as may be dictated by fashion, and that it can be made not only of linen, but of any other textile fabric, such as hair-cloth, &c., the essence of my invention being to so construct the pads that thefilling may be readily and conveniently removed, as above stated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A breast-pad consisting of the pockets A, provided with openings a in front, and flaps b for closing the same, and joined by acounecting-piece, G, provided with the whalebone strip E, to adapt the whole to conform to the breast and shoulder B, and loop E, for attaching the article to the person of the wearer, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
ELIZABETH STOWELL WELDON.
