Description

Nov. 26, 1929. F. DUWE 1,736,850
ROLLER WEIR Fi led Jan. 25, 1928 Y Inventor:
Patented Nov. 26, 1929 v .UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FRIEDRICH DU'WE, OF MAINZ, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR T MASCHINENFABRIK AUG-S- IBURG-NURNBERG A. G., OF NUREMBERG, GERMANY, A CORPORATION OF GER- MANY ROLLER WEIR Application filed January 25, 1928, Serial No. 249,321, and in Germany August 18, 1927.
My invention consists in additional improvements of the device described in my copending application Ser. No. 165,740 which relates to a device for opening and closing extension gates provided on the roller-bodies of roller-weirs by means of the winch which serves for lifting and lowering said rollerbody.
Heretofore in devices of this kind the roller-body could only be lifted and lowered with the extension gate in fully laid-down condition. My present invention consists in an improved construction, which permits the lifting and lowering of the roller-body independently of the condition of the latter, and more especially also where theextension gate is in its uppermost or in any intermediate position. For this purpose the device de scribed in my above-mentioned application is used, wherein the chain of the winch is slidingly guided upon an end bearing of the roller-body. Essentially my invention consists in this, that in addition to the stationary stops which limit the motion of the chain in condition of no-load, a stopping device is used for the respective part of the chain, said stop,- ping device being adapted to be engaged with each of the members of the chain passing said device and permitting a regulation of the motion of the chain in every condition of load between zero-load and maximum load which is determined by said stationary stops.
The drawing shows in Fig. 1 a side elevation of a drum weir and gate embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a section through one end of the weir-drum and Fig. 3 a top plan view of Fig. 1. I
The endless chain 1) is driven by means of the pinion a of the winch and carried around the drum-body d by means of guiding members 0 shown in Fig. 2. In the lowered position of the drum (1, the chain 6 is released from the load of the weir and may, therefore, slide upon the drum body between the guiding members 0. Co-axially to the weir drum 0? and the parts of the chain b passing around the drum there is arranged a two-arm lever 1 1 projecting through slots 2, 2", provided in the wall of the drum. The chain 6 in the lowered position of the drum will be in engagement with the arm 1 of said lever, which arm in this position of the weir is downwardly directed, while the other arm 1 is arranged so as to come into engagement with the chain 12 aft-er the laying down of the extension gate lc, or after the drum d has been turned to a certain angle, before the arm 1 is disengaged from chain 5. Another lever 4 is mounted upon the shaft 3 of the twoarm lever 1*, 1", and is connected with the movable extension gate is by a link 5 (Fig. 1). Chain 5 is further provided with a stop m at a point between the driving pinion, a of the winch and a guiding roller 7" provided in the rear of said winch, said stop co-operating with fixed abutments o and p. A suspension device 9 of well known kind is provided for suspending chain 6 in a plurality of parts, as indicated'in Fig. 1, said parts being wound up during the lifting of the drum d.
A stop-lever Zis rotatably mounted near the guiding roller 7' for the chain I) being adapted to be inserted by means of the hand-lever 2 into each member of the chain 6 leaving the guiding roller 1*. For this purpose a recess 3 is provided at the end of said lever Z, which will engage from below with a bolt 4 of the chain 1) which at the time is passing said guiding roller r; in this manner the chain may be kept in position. I I
The mode of operation of the construction according to my invention is as follows:
In order tolay down the movable extension gate is, the winch is caused to rotate as indicatedby the arrow at the upper part of Fig. 1. The chainb, which is relieved of the'weight of the drum d, will then start to move under no-load and slide upon the drum at the ends thereofbetween the guide members 0. Thereby the arm 1 of the two-arm lever 1 1', which is in engagement with the chain 1) is caused to rotate in the direction as indicated by the arrow at the lower part of Fig. 1, and by the lever 4 and the link 5, the movable extension gate k will be laid down. Meanwhile the stop m of the chain 6 has travelled from the abutment 0 t0 the abutment 7), so that further movement of the chain 1) will be stopped. Now, if the drum (1 shall be raised, the rotation of the winch is simply continued,
whereby the chain side running upon the pinion a will be wound up, the wound up parts being then kept in plurally suspended sections by the suspension device 9. During the raising of the weir drum d, the latter is positively guided by its gear rim and the rack z, and will move into the upper position as indicated by the broken lines in Fig. 1.
During this movement of the Weir drum the arm 1 of the lever 1, 1", has become disengaged from the chain 1). However, the door is can not swing away again from the drum d into open position, because the arm 1 has come into engagement with the chain 1) ere the arm 1 has left the chain. The arm 1', after having engaged the chain b, rests in engagement with the chain until the drum d has attained its upper position as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1; the door is is thus held closed. If, before starting the Winch, the stop-lever Z is moved into operative position, the chain 6 will be no more in no-load 1 condition and the roller cl may be lifted while the gate is is in fully erected position. If it I is desired to partly lay down the gate is, the
chain 6 is started to move in condition of noload through a part of the distance between the stops 0 and p and the stop-lever Z is thereupon moved to engage the chain at a desired point, so that the chain will now be kept in position and the weir drum (Z may be lifted in erected position of the gate is.
I claim:
1. In a drum weir, a drum, an extension gate hinged thereto, a chain adapted to pass around said drum in sliding engagement therewith, stationary stops for said chain,
' an additional stopping device adapted to engage said chain at any desired point so as to control the motion of said chain between zeroload and a maximum load as determined by said stationary stops, and means for operating said additional stopping device at will.
2. The combination, a's'specified by-claim 1, wherein said additional stopping device consists in a pivotally mounted lever adapted to engage the chain at any desired point.
3. The combination, as specified by claim 1, wherein said additional stopping device consists in a guiding roller for said chain and a pivotally mounted lever having a recess at its free end adapted to engage said chain at any desired point while passing over said guiding roller, so as to frictionally press said chain against said guiding roller.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. I FRIEDRICH DUWE.
