INVENTOR BY NobZeMfifi/mon ATTORNY NOV. 12, 1929. JOHNSON 1,735,764
INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE I Filed Dec. 17, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ATTORNET" r and piston rod connection.
- Patented Nov. 12; 1929 v e yumrun STATES PATENT OFFICE norm: m. Jonnson, or nnraorr, ,mcmeen INTERNAL-COMBUSTION GINE Application filed December 17, 1927. Serial No. 240,712.
whereinvalve plates are'fixed on the shaft,-
15 one on each side of the casing, so that their inner surfaces bear against inlet and exhaust ports in the sides of'the cylinders to regulate the flow of mixture into and from the latter.
- Having thus briefly outlined the major 2 purposes of the invention I will now describe two preferred embodiments thereof with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of the invention, parts being broken away. Y 2 "Figure 2 is a; section on the line 2'2' of 'FigureL' e a Figure 3 is an enlarged detail of the cam Figure 4 is a sectional elevation of aimodifled construction.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of v .Fig ;ure.4. V Figure 6 is 1 enlarged view of the c am used in the mo 'fied construction, and F'gure 7 a 'section on the line 7-' 7 of Figure 6.
Referringto Figures 1, 2 and '3 of the drawings, 1 designates a plurality of substantially radially arranged cylinders, the inner ends of which are secured to the periphery of a casing 2 which'is intended. to contain a 111 bricant. In the cylinders 1 are pistons 3 having rods 4; thereon which project through' openings 5 in thecasing and terminate at their outer ends in bifurcations 6, indicates a shaft which projects through both sides 8 of the casing substantially at right angles to the radially arranged piston rods. Fixed on v the shaft 7 within the casing is an'elliptical' cam 9 around the'marginof which an annu- 23 is provided to balance lar flange 10 projects laterally in both directions. Between the inner ends of the bifurcations 6 rollers ll arerevolvably mounted which are adapted'to bear against the outer surface 10 of the flange 10; and inwardly projecting shoes 12 secured to the outer ends of the bifurcations ride around .the inner sur faces 10 of the flange 1O. As the istons move inwards on their working stro e the rollers 11 force the cam 9 around, and on'the no outward stroke of the pistons the rollers are held substantially in contact with the periphery of the cam by the shoes 12. Through one side of the cylinders arcintake ports 14 and through their opposite sides are exhaust ports 15. Each set of ports is normally closed bya valve plate 16, or 17, both of which are fixed on the shaft-7 outside the casing 2 one on each side of'the latter.
Annular intake and exhaust manifolds 18 and 19 are supported from the cylinders, one- .on each side of the latter, by spacing membrs 20, and bear against the outerzsides of the valve plates 16 and 17. Eachmanifold has a passage 18*, or 19, opposite each cylin- 7 der inlet port 14, exhaust port 15, and each valve plate 16, or 17 has an aperture 16, or 17", therethroafih so that as the plate turns each cylinder i et, or exhaust, port is in turn.
connected with its intake, or exhaust, mani fold opening respectively.
on the valve Plate 17 a starting gear-213s provided to meshwith the starter pinion 22, and on the opposite valve plate 16 a weight gear 21. g
In Figures 4 5, 6 and 7, a modified con-- struction is shown wherein the cam 9, whichis usually circular, has elliptical slots 9" and 9 in both sides. The opposed slots '9 are preferably of different width and depth to:.,, the slots 9 The piston rods and .4! have bifurcated ends 10 and 10".to which shoes 12 and 12" are pivotallysecured; the latter ride around in the slots 9 and 9 respectively 5 as .the cam rotates. ,Owing to the length of the shoes 12 and-12", and the provision of rollers 25 and 25 gon'them which travel around in the slots, there is practically -no 3 possibility of one of the shoes leaving its slot 9 the weight v02E the 5 at one of the intersections 30 and passing into the slot in which it is not intended to travel. In other respects the construction shown in these figures is the same as that shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
It will be noted that in both forms of con- 1 struction the centre lines of the piston rods pass directly through the centre of the cam;
and again owing to the casin 2, or 2, being enclosed the piston rod on s and the cam may operate in oil.
Moreover it is understood that the con struction is subject to such modifications as fall within scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire ,to secure by Letters Patent is:
1, In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a plurality of cylinders substantially radially arranged, an inner' ,casing to which the innerends of the cylinders are secured, pistons in said cylinders, piston rods on said pistons projecting through the sides of said casing, a shaft extending through said casing at right angles to said piston rods,
a cam on said shaft within said casing adapted to be rotated by the movement of said pistons, said cylinders having inlet and exhaust ports in their opposite sides, intake and exhaust manifolds respectively at opposite sides of said cylinders, and valve plates on said shaftone adapted to control communication between the intake manifold and said inlet ports and the other adapted to control communication between the exhaust manifold and said exhaust ports.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the
combination of a plurality of cylinders substantially radially arranged, a casing to which the inner ends of the cylinders are secured, pistons in said cylinders, piston rods on said pistons projecting through the sides of said casing, a shaft extending through said casing substantially at right' angles to said piston rods, a cam on said shaft adapted to be rotated by the movement of said pistons, said cylinders-having inlet and exhaust ports in their opposite sides, valve plates on said shaft the inner sides of which are adapted'to bear against said port openings, inlet and exhaust connections respectively at opposite sides of said cylinders and opposite said port openings against the outer sidesof said plates, and the latter each being provided with an aperture therethrough adapted to connect each inlet, or exhaust, connection with its inlet, or exhaust, port in turnas said shaft rotates.
NOBLE M. JOHNSON.
