The safety attachment vcomprises a ylocking boltflO which is connected with the' hinge shaftrT in such a manner that when the cover bracket arm N is retracted and when the cover is opened with the machine at rest, theV free end 11 is projected into a keeper opening 13 in the shift rod I, it being Vunderstood that 'the shift rod at this time is disposed in a shifted position which brings the keeper opening 13 into alinement with the opening 12. The connection between the vhinge shaft T and thelock bolt 10-preferably embodies an eccentric pivotal connection 14 with a circular disk or flange 15 secured to the hinge shaft T. It is'obvious that while the cover Q, is blocked against opening bythe bolt 10, being prevented from rearward movement due to its engagement with the shift rod I while the same is shifted to a position to hold the belt H on'the live pulley F,
Y there is nothing to prevent the opening of the cover while theV machine is .still .turning by momentum after theshifting of the beltI-I Von tothe dead pulley Gr. In order,f.there .'fore, Vto further safeguard the operator or employee from injurydue to opening of the cover until the machine has come to `a complete rest or dead stop, the opposite end of the lhinge shaft T has keyed or otherwise attached thereto a locking-member 16 having a tooth or pawl17 projectingradiallytherefrom. The tooth or pawl is disposed between the furcations 18 of the bifurcated Vor forked member 19, which bifurcated or forked member has pivotedA between spaced bearing brackets 20, a lock lever 21 having a shoulder '22. The lock lever 21 is ,normally swung to a position to hold the shoulder 22 in engagement with the pawl or tooth 17 by a spring 23 and is positively prevented frombeing swung to a released position by a locking rod 24 which is connected with the lever 21 and witha foot 25 which is fulcrumed at 26 in bearings 27. on a bifur- Vcated vmember 28. The bifurcated member 28 has furcations 29 provided with alined openings 30 through which the countershaft C extends. A. wheel 31 is keyed to the shaft C for limited independent turning movement pointed teeth by a key or keys 32 which are secured to the notches 38. v
When the shaft C is'turning it is obvious that the teeth 37 willprevent the lock lever 21 from being moved to a released position Whichdisposes the shoulder 22 out of the path of movement of the pawl or tooth 17 of the locking member 16. It is further obvious that when the shaft C comes to rest, the lever 21 may then be swung to a release position against the action of the spring 23 due to the fact that one of the notches 38 defined between the teeth 37 will allow for the swinging movement of the foot. If the apex or point of one of the teeth 37 should be disposed in a. position to obstruct the movement of the foot 25, the keyed connection`32 and 33 will permit of a limited movement of the wheel with respect to the shaft C so as to dispose the next adjacent notch in a position to allow for movement of the foot 25.
In order to ermit of the manual turning movement of't e basket or receptacle in the extractor'body A when,V the cover is opened, it will be observed that the lock lever'21 is provided with an arcuate depression 40 which allows for the swinging ofthe leverand the consequent movement of the foot 25 to an 'outof-the-way position with'respect to the stan. It is apparent that with thecover opened and the bolt 10 in a/locked position with respect to the shift rod I as illustrated in Fig. 3, it is impossible to shift the belt I-I from the dead pulley G to the live pulley F, and
itis therefore apparent that asafety attach- -ment for machines of this character has been devised which is fool-proof and practically automatic in its operation. Y
What is claimed is: 1. The combination with an extractor including a body having an inner rotary inember and a drive shaft with shiftable means for yrendering the drive shaftl and inner rotatary member active; of a safety attachment in-i `cluding a wheel secured to the drive shaft and having notches in its periphery,f'a"detent` means for preventing, when in one of its means and movable into the peripheral notches ofthe wheel only whenthe wheel is at operable by the cover when opened for lockl` ing the shiftable means in its shifted position `which renders the drive 'shaft and inner rotary member inactive.
2. Thel combination with an extractor 1n- Vcluding a bodyhaving an. inner rotary mem-lv positions, the opening of the cover, and a shiftable foot connected with the detent ber and a drive'shaft with -shiftable means for rendering the drive shaft and inner roincluding a wheel secured to the drive shaft and having notches in its periphery, a denotches of the wheel only when the wheel is at rest, for permitting of the shifting of the detent means to a release position, andmeans operable by the cover when opened for locking the shiftable means' in its shifted position which renders the drive shaft and inner rotary member active; of a. safety attachment tary member inactive, said means including a bolt shiftable to an engaged locking position with the extractor driving mechanism when said mechanism is inactive, whereby to to hold said mechanism inactive while the cover is open.
