This invention relates to wheel lifting devices. v
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of simple construction adapted for lifting car or other wheels from boring mills and the like after the boring action has been completed.
A further object is to provide -a device having a substantially cylindrical body portion adapted to be inserted through the aXle opening in a wheel and provided with engaging members adapted to project outvvvardly from the Abody portion to engageY the lower side of the wheel to permit it to be lifted. Y
A. further object is to provide means for withdrawing the engaging members when it is desired to 4release ,the Vdevice from the wheel.
- A further object is to provide a` substantially integral body having engaging members pivotally mounted in recesses therein for engaging the lower side of a wheel to permit it to be lifted, the device being provided with means adapted to be engaged by a hook or the like carried by a crane whereby the lifting operation may. be performed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the '30 course of the following description.

f Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates a preferably integral substantially 49 cylindrical body formed of suitable material and provided on opposite sides with slots 11, the inner faces 12 of which converge toward the bottom of the body. Thebody is provided with a pair of spaced upstanding ears 13,

Vehicle wheels are'of course very heavy and difiicult to lift from position. With the present device the lifting o is very much simplified and the wheel readily Y A may be lifted from position. In operation, the device is inserted through the axle opening by inserting it'from the upper side of the 'freely moving upward- 1.9.5 ly, aswill be apparent. The body'portion'is preferably of nearly the 'same diameter as peraton ao l sico mitted to drop to horizontal position, as iny dicated in solid lines in Figure 2. The bolt 14 is adapted to be received in a hook or the like suspended froma crane. Operation of the crane to move the device upwardly obviously willbring the upperl faces of the iingers 15 into engagement with the lower face 'oi the wheel whereby the latter may be elevated.
.As ypreviously stated the body portion is of y substantially the same diameter as the aXle opening whereby thel fingers l will be properly centered and the wheel will b e balanced.
When Vit is desired to release the device from the wheel, the crane is loweredpermitting the device to slip downwardly a suiiicient distance to permit the ingerslo to swing free of the wheel. Upward movement of the outer ends of the fingers is accomplished merelyby lifting the operating member 23y whereby the fingers will swing to the dotted line position 'shown in Figure 2, and the device may be readily-withdrawn from the wheel. t will .interfere with the be noted that the inner' ends of the lingers 15 are spacedv from the inner walls 12 of the 4slots 11.4 With the openings 27 arranged to communicate with theinner and lower por tions of the slots, it will be apparent thatany dirt, metal chips or other :foreign matter finding its way into the` slots will passout throughthe openings 27 and thus will not proper operation of the upwardly to inoperative positions wholly within said slots, said flexible means extending upwardly through said openings and havinging van upper end arranged above said body, said body having a pair of parallel integral projecting members extending upwardly beyond its upper end and arranged transversely with respect to said slots, said projecting members being provided. with aline-d openings, and a belt extending through said alined openings. v
