EDWARD H. SCHNELIJ, OF SOUTH NOR-WALK, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENTIN COMBINED BOLT AND KEY FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,563, dated February 15, 1876 5 application filed January 29, 1876.
' To all whom it may concern:
' ot' the plates removed, andshowing the-position of'the key and bolt fastener before fastening them. 7 Fig. 2 is an elevation, showing the positionai'ter fastening them, and Fig.3 is a section on line av 00 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts. r
A is a little block of metal, with a notch, B, in the upper end, wide enough to receive the key-bit C; also with a stud, D, on one side to lock the bolt E, which is fittedto slide up and down on the rod F, arranged under the bolt, and obliquely to it, as shown, and between the block and its supporting-stud Gris a spring, H, which presses the block to the upper end of the rod to lock the key and the bolt, as shown in Fig. 2, the former being effected by thenotched end of the block engaging the bit of the key,
and the latter by the stud D sliding into the notch in the lower edge of the bolt, between the shoulder I and the stud J. K is a springcatch employed to hold the block back on the rod F, when it isv not to be used, by catching it in the notch L when it is shoved back, which is done by hand with the stud-pin M, which screws into the block through a slot in the case from the inside. The spring-catch has the end N turned up'in front of the notched end of the block, so that just after throwing the bolt the block may be sprung to lock it and the key by turning the key a little farther against said end N, and pressing the catch out of notch L. The key is notched at 0, so that it will pass under the spring-catch and not detach it when locking on the outside and taking. out the key. The stud M may be applied to either side of the block through either side of the lock-case, so that the eontrivance is applicable to reversible locks. The key locking-block may be used without the spring H by working it by hand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent r Y l. The combination of sliding notched block A and spring-catch K with the key of a lock,
substantially as specified.
