FRANCE CLOSURE Application filed August 6, 1927, Serial No. 211,029, and in France April 19, 1927.
My invention relates to wooden closures and more particularly to that type of closure in which a plurality of ventilating openings are provided which permit one to see without being seen. i
My invention is comprised in certain novel forms, construction, and combination of parts, the objects of which are to provide reliable devices for the purposes stated and to cheapen the cost of manufacture, all of which will hereinafter be fully described and claimed.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the outer side of the closure;
Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; I
Fig. 3 is a perspective looking from the rear of Fig. 1 and showing the inner side of the closure;

Fig. 8 is a view similar to'Fig. 3 of th1s modification Fig. 9 is a section along the line 99 of Fig. 8; i i
Fig. 10 is a section along the line 1010 of Fig. 8;
Fig. 11 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a third embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 12 is a section along the line 12-42 I of Fig. 11;
Fig. 13 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of this third embodiment;
Fig. 14 is a section along the line 14-44 of Fig. 13; and I Fig. 15 is a section along the line 1515 of Fig. 13.
Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 5, a panel 1 is surrounded along its edgesby a frame comprising two longitudinal strips 2 and two transverse strips 3. The said strips are fastened to the edge of panel 1 by means of the usual mortise and tension joint extending throughout the edgeof the panel 1.
The panel 1 is provided with a plurality of transverse ventilating openings 5. The said ventilating openings are shorter on the outer side of the closure than on the inner side as shown at 6 and 7. These openings are obliquelydisposed in parallel relation. The sides of the opening being parallel and the ends tapered and obliquely disposed with respect to the side, each opening has the form of prismoid whose bases are similar trapezoids and whose faces consist of two parallel trapezoids and two non-parallelbut symmetrically disposed trapezoids.
Obviously such a structure possesses great advantages over the well-known type of 'closurein which pivoted slats or obliquely distend away from each other toward the inner side of the closure but also are obliquely disposed. Such a form of opening increases the isibility from the inner side of the closure.
Referring to Figs. 6 to 9 the panel 1 instead of being provided with a single row of openings is here provided with a double row as indicated at 5, 5". Each opening 5* and 5 is of precisely the same form as previously described in connections with Figs. 1 to 5 as indicated at 6, 6 and 7 7 This type might a be suitable where a larger closuremember 1s tobe used. c
Adverting to Figs. 11 to 15, a panel 8 is provided consisting of a solid block of wood in which the openings 9 are out. On the front or outer sideof the panel 8 the opening is of segmental form as shown at 1 0 and tapers from the rear of the panel. On the rear side of the panel the opening is given the form of a rectangle having curved ends as shown at 11.
This form of closure is particularly suitable for heavy doors. Thereenforcing rods 14 not only give the closure more strength and prevent warping but also provide a means for attaching a suitable anchorage which mighty become detached by the weight of the closure if fastened to the wood.
-I-Iaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a closure of the type described the combination of a solid wooden panel and a plurality of ventilating slots formed in said panel extending upwardly from the front side to the rear side of said panel the slot on the front side of the panel being of greater length than on the rear side of the panel for the purpose described, and the sides of said slots diverging from the front side to the rear side alonglines lying in planes at acute angles to said panel.
2. In a closure of the type described the combination of a solid wooden panel and a plurality of ventilating slots formed in sai-t panel extending upwardly from the front side a to the rear side of said panel, two of the walls of said slot being parallel and two of the walls being tapered from the reartothe' front of said panel and lying in planes at acute angles to said panel for the purpose described.
8. Inra closure of the type described the combination of a solid woo-den panel'and a plurality of ventilating slots formed in said panel extending upwardly from the front side to the rear side of said panel, each of said slots having the form of a prismoid whose basesare similar trapezoids and whose faces consist of two parallel trapezoids and "two nonparallel but symetrically disposed trapezoids, said non-parallel trapezoids flying in planes at acute angles to said panel.
' 7 l. In a closure of the type described the combination of a solid wooden panel, a plurality of ventilatin slots cut in said panel and extending upwardly from the front side to the rear side of said panel, said slots b'ein v ofgreater lengths on the front than on the rear side of said panel and the sidesofsaid v slots divergingfron'i the front'side to the rear side along lines lying in planesat acute angles, to said panel, and metallic reenforcing means" adjacent each end of saidpanel for the our pose described; V I
5.' In a closure of the type described the combination of a solid wooden panel, a plurality of ventilating slots cut in said panel and extending upwardly from the front side to I the rear side of said panel, said slots being of greater lengths on the front than on the rear side of said panel and the sides of said slots diverging from the front side to the rear side along lines lying in planes at acute angles to said panel, a transverse hole adjacent each end of said panel, and metallic reenforcing rods disposed in said holes, the ends of said rods being flared for the purpose described.
6. In a closure of the type described the combination of a solid wooden panel, a plurality of ventilating slots cut in said panel and extending upwardly from the front side to the rear side of said panel, said slots being of greater lengths on the front than on the rear side of said panel and the sides of said slots diverging from the front side to the rear side along lines lying in planes at'acute angles to said panel, a transverse hole adjacent each end of said panel, metallic washers disposed in each end of said holes and a metallic rod disposed in each of said holes, the ends of each of said rods being riveted against their respective washers for the purpose described.
