TOE PIECE FOR SKIS Filed July 25, 1927 Java @272 for" Patented Nov. 12, 1929 I I v UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE CHARLES A. rn-oo'ron, or HANOVER, new HAMPSHIRE TOE-PIECE FOR sKrs Application filed July 23, 1927. SerialNo. 207,894.
This invention relates to improved toe preferably projects forwardly of the side pieces designed to cooperate with suitable plate, asdesignated by numeral 3.
heel straps to secure skis to the shoes of a Formed in the member 1 are a plurality of user. transverse slots 4 preferably arranged with 5 The improved toe pieces are provided with beveled or. countersunk surfaces 5 to engage 50 secure and dependable means to hold them to the heads of fastening screws 6 which are emthe ski and are especially designed to avoid bedded within the material of the ski 7. The catching upon each other or adjoining obbottom face of plate 1 adjoining certain of jects, thus eliminating danger of fals and theslotsis provided with corrugations 9, Figs.
10 injury. Furthermore, this type of ski bind 3 and 7, which are designed to bite the wood ing is arranged to be simple and sturdy in ofski 7, and thus to prevent accidental loosconstruct-ion, light in weight, and adjustable ening of the toe piece. The surface of pate 1 to fit shoes of various sizes or widths, while adjoining the intermediate opening may be some freedom of movement of the shoe in releft free of these'corrugations, if desired. Or-
lation to the ski is permitted and the wedgdinarily screws 6 adjoining the front and 60 ing of material between the toe of the user rear openings 4 will afford ample security in and the top of the ski is avoided. holding the toe pieces to the ski and the screw The above andfurther objects and advanat the intermediate opening may be used as tageous features of the invention will be apan additional precaution.
parent to those skilled in the art upon a read- The comparatively long bed plate, which 65 ing of the subjoined description and claims results from the provision of extensions 3, in conjunction with the accompanying drawpermits ample spacing of the substantially ings, in which: aligned front and rear screws 6, ,whereby Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the improved danger of splitting the ski is lessened and toe piece as applied to a ski; whereby more effective securing means is afe 7 Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; forded. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of one of thetoe The plate 2preferably is provided with an pieces; integral lug 12 having a curved, canrlike Fig. 4 is an inside elevation of the same; lower surface 14 designed to engage the sole. .30 Figs. 5 and 6 are side and end elevations of of the shoe. The curvature of this surface 75 the preferred strap fastening construction permits some freedom in relative movement used with toe pieces of this Character and; in a vertical plane between the shoe and the Fig. 7 is a section on line 77 of Fig. 3. ski at the same time permitting any lateral The improved toe pieces, exemplified by movement of the'boot relative to theski as the accompanying drawings, each comprises well as avoiding injury of the shoe solo. The 30 a bottom or bed plate 1, and a side plate 2 front of plate 1 preferably iscurved to avoid projecting upwardly substantially at right sharp projections which might engage forangles to the plane of the bottom plate. Prefeign objects and tend to trip the user of the erably these plates are formed integrally out ski, while the upstanding plate 2 is carefully 40 of light material, in the recommended emstream-lined or provided with a curvature 35 bodiment of the invention, being die cast of about its edge and its junction with the botaluminum alloy. The bottom plate 1 has its tom plate which prevents catching upon forouter side, which joins the side plate 2, tapereign objects or upon the adjoining toe piece ing somewhat in order to conform to the carried by the other ski. I
V shape of the front portion of a shoe, and it The fastening means for the .heel strap 00 preferabl is received in the plate 2 in such a manner that it is guarded against accidental unfastening or catching upon an adjoining fastening or other objec For this purpose, the rear portion of plate 2 is provided with a slot 15 substantially paralleling the plane of the side plate. A transverse rivet 16 bridges the slot and has its ends flush with the surface of the plate. A flat hook of sheet metal designated by numeral 1'? and carried by a heel strap 18 5 and 6) is designed to be received within the slot 15 and to ei'igag'e pin 16 thus eing protected from accidental disengagement or catching upon adjoining objects.
It is thus evident that I have provided means for binding skis to the shoes of a user which are carefully stream-lined in orcler to avoid catching upon foreign objects or upon each other, and which are designed to protect the heel strap fastenings against accidental entangling or disengagement. The bet plates of these toe pieces are provided with projections to avoid the wedging of snow or foreign objects between the shoe sole and the upper surface of the ski and to provide room for more sturdy and dependable means for fastening to th ski. Furthermore, toe pieces of this character are designed to allow some freedom of movement ina vertical plane between the shoe and the and to permit ustment in width to suit various sizes of shoes, while providing fastening means which are secure and are adapted to withstand a long period of usage. Thus. toe pieces are provided which are light, durable, and dependable and which enable high'speed or stunt skiing to be attempted with greater safety and less danger of trip ping than has heretofore been possible.
1. A toe piece for skis and the like, comprising a bed plate and an integral side plate,
ski
a slot within the side plate disposedin a plane generally parallel to the plane of that plate, and a pin in said slot to engage a hook upon the end of aheel strap, whereby the hook is guarded against catching upon foreign objects. f

A. toe piece of aluminum alloy for skis or the like, comprising a bed plate and a side plate, said bed plate havinga plural y of transverse slots and extending forwarolv of the side plate, and corrugations upon the botplate, said bed, plate having a plurality 0' sides of the slot to engage a hook upon th tom face of the bed plate adjoining the slots to bite the ski wood:
3. A toe piece of aluminum alloy for skis or the like, comprising a bed plate and a si le transverse slotsandextending forwardly o the side plate, the side plate having its edge merging into its outer face and having slot with a pin extending between opposit end of a heel strap,
