Description
Nov. 12, 19529. .1. D. JOYCE 1,735,349 ATTACHMENT FOR BOBBIN WINDING MACHINES File d'Nov. l, 1928 JHM 0 t/arc Patented Nov. 12, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT A'rmonmmvtr FOR BOBBIN-WINDING MACHINES Application filed iTovcmber This invention relates to bobbin winding machines, and has for its object toprovide' improvements in the bobbin positioning "and retaining means. I I Q The bobbins employed in connection with the class of machines to which this invention ielates'are constructed of a. pulp composition somewhat similar if notthe same material as is commonly defined as Fpape'r pulp board. \In the continued winding and unwinding of these pulp composition bobbins, the retain, ing caps heretofore applied to the upper end thereof tears and roughens the said end so as to in time render the bobbins unfit for use. p This invention consists in the construction of a bobbin retainin cap which protects the up" e'r end of the bo%bin against the tearing an roughening action, so that the life and usefulness of the bobbin is prolonged indefinitely and its efficiency preserved, as well as the elimination or the breaking or fraying of the yarn or thread in 'unwindingtherefi bin, I j I f Referring .to the accompanying drawing; Fig-are 1 is a reduced fragmentary and diagraminatic view ill'nstrating a winding bobbin, in operative position, v
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the bobbin and its retaining cap, and p V I I s Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the several parts of the retaining cap their j relative positions before assembly, and also illustrating them in association with the up; per end are bobbin to which the "cap is to be applied.

moment due to the direction of rotation 01'' the bobbin which moment would tend to unthread or loosen the cap if a right-hand thread was employed. L I Referring particularly to the cap '8, it will be seen from Figure 3 that the same comprises a flange 9 having central opening 10 defined by a fiat body portion 11 which merges into a gradually and downwardly curved outer portion 12. It will be noted tliat the upperend 13 of the bobbin 1 is curved substantially complementa'lly to the curvature of the flange 9, as shown in Figure 2, so that the said flange 9 functions to exactly center the upper end "of the bobbin 1 as shown infthed'rawings. i
The knob portion 14 of the cap 8 is prefer ably formed of a material such as bakelite and includes a cylindrical knurled portion 15, a flanged portion 16 and a short depending cylindrical portion 17. A hole 18 (Figure 2) is centrallyprovi'ded in the structure, and a threaded bushing 19 is pressed into said hole so that the end of the bushing is flush with the end of the depending oylindrical portion 17 as shown in Figure 3.
The cap also includes a collar QOhaving a short upstanding annular flange 21 of smalle'r diameter than the hole 10 in the flange 9, the height of saidflange 21 being slightly in excess of the thickness of the large metal flange 9, while the hole or bore22 of the collar pressed on the said de 'iending cylindrical portion 17'un' ti'l the short upstanding annular flange 21 passes through the said hole 10 in the metal flange 9 and bottoms against the flange portion 16fof the knob 14. This prevents the collar 20 from clamping the metal flange between the collar 20 and the flange is threaded on the end ot the stem 6.
Having thus fully described the invention its operation is as follows:
The bobbin 1 being positioned on its support 5 as shown in Figure 2, the" cap 8 As soon as the metal flange 9 progresses downwardly and engages the end 13 of the bobbin it centers the said bobbin, and through frictional engagement between the curved portion 12 of the said flange 9, and the curved end 13 of the bobbin, rotation of the said flange i on and against the end 13 or the bobbin is stopped, while the knob i i of the cap continues to be threaded down on the st m 6 until the said flange 9 tightly clamps the bobbin in proper operative position as shown in Figure 2.
7 By reason of this construction all rotation of the metal flange 9 on and upon the end 13 ot the bobbin 1 is prevented, while a tight clamping action between the metal flange 9 and the end 13 of the bobbin is insured.
The result is that all tearing, scratching and roughening action on the end 13 of the bobbin is entirely absent and eliminated by the use ct this construction, and the lite'and eficiency of the bobbin is thereby indefinitely prolonged.
llfhile I have shown and described what I conceive to be a preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 do not wishto be limited to the enact construction disclosed, but I consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modifications as fall within the li lit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: l. A cap for centering and retaining a winding bobbin including a centrally bored knob portion which comprises a flange and a depending cylindrical portion, a threaded lmshing within the bore of the knob portion, a metal flange having a central hole, a flat central portion and a downwardly curved outer por ion, and a collar which includes an upstanding cylindrical flange of smaller diameter than the hole in said metal flange, the said upstanding cylindrical flange being of greater depth than the thickness of the said metal flange, the said collar being poitioned on the said dependin cylindrical portion oi the knob portion with the said metal flange therebetween, the said upstanding cylindrical flange on tile said collar passing through the hole in the said metal flange and the bottoming against the flange ot the knob portion to retain the metal flange without binding the same and to permit tree (-ollar being disposed between the said flange oi the knob and the said collar, the device including means to prevent binding the metal flange by the said collar and to permit tree rotation of the said lmob with respect to the said metal flange. A retaining and centering cap for windeads therein ana including a flange and a depending cylindrical portion, a collar for the cylndrical portion, a bobbin engaging flange interposed between the flange on the knob and the said collar and rotatable relt vely to the said knob, the device including mean for preventing the collar from binding a 'ainstthe said bobbin engaging flange.
t. A retaining and centering cap for windh mg bo bins includlng a threaded knob having a flange and a depending cylindrical portion, a collar for the cylindrical portlon and a bobbin engaging flange interposed between the flange on the knob and the said j bobbins including a bored knob having collar and rotatable relatively to the said :3
knob. I
5. A retaining and centering cap for winding bobbins including a threaded knob having a depending cylindrical portion, a collar bin engaging flange interposed between the said knob and the said collar and rotatable relatively to the said knob.
6. A retaining and centering cap "for winding ing a depending cylindrical portion, a bobbin engaging flange under the said knob and rotatable relatively thereto, and means for retaining the said bobbin engaging flange j on the said knob.
1. A. retaining and centering cap for winding bobbins including a. threaded knob and a bobbin engaging flange and means for rotat-ably securing the said bobbin engaging flange on the said knob.
