CONTACT MECHANI SM Original Filed Oct. 29. 1919 Patented Nov. 12, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT "OFFICE,
HERBERT W. CHENEY, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO ALLIS-CHALIJERS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF 'MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CORIORATION OF DELAWARE Original application filed October 29, 1919, Serial No. 1921. Serial This invention relates to electric contact mechanisms or devices.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a simple and ellicient contact device, and one which may be readily assembled. Another object is the provision of a contact device having flexibility in the sense that with a given form of contact element the number of such elements may be readily multiplied and their arrangement changed so as to form various combinations, whereby the contact devices may be adapted to ditferent sizes and forms of electric switches or motor controllers. One of the specific uses to which the invention may be put illustrated in applicants copending application S. N. 334,887, filed October 25), 1919, resulting in Patent No. 1,574,417, February 23, 1926, of which latter the present case is a division.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby contacts may be supported and assembled on rods and by the act of assembly are automatically positioned in proper alinement.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby a contact clamped to a round rod may be positively prevented from moving with respect to said rod. Other objects will appear hereinafter as the description of the invention proceeds.
The novel features of the invention will appear from this specification and the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof and disclosing one embodiment of said invention and all these novel features are intended to be pointed out in the claims The single figure of the drawing is an elevation of a contact device embodying the features of the invention.
In the drawing the contact device is illustrated as cooperable with a movable contact member 1. In the instance shown the contact member 1 is operable by a mechanism such as disclosed in applicants copending application hereinbetore referred to. As far as the present invention is concerned however, it is not material what the form of the movable contact member is nor by what means it is operated. The contact device of the present invention includes one or more contacts ner.
CONTACT MncHANrs 834,887. Divided and this application filed July 11, No. 4 83,732. p
2, 3 here shown as relatively stationary.
These contacts are mounted on an insulating support or bridge 4. Contacts 2, 3 are provided'with a threaded shanks 5, 6 respectively, passing through openings in both thein sulating support 4 and U-shaped clamps 7 8. The clamps 7, 8 are adapted to be slipped over. rods 9, 10 supported in any suitable man- The clamps 7, 8 may be'insulated from rods 9, 10 by the members or tubes 11, 12. The contacts, insulating support and clamps may be fastened to the rods by tightening nuts 13, l l associated with the threaded shank of each contact member. Conductors may be fastened to the respective contact ened and as many clamps as necessary or desirable added.
In view of the above it will be apparent in what manner the various objects of the invention are attained.
It should be understood that it is not desired to limit the invention claimed to the exact details of construction shown and de scribed, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
It is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination, a round rod, a unitary elampdisposed around said rod for substantially 860,a contact provided with means passing through holes in the arms of said clamp, and means for positively preventing rotation of said clamp around said rod.
2. In combination, a round rod, a unitary I clamp disposed around said rod for substantially 360, a contact provided with means e8 passing through holes in the arms of said clamp, and meansincluding a separate fixed member for positively preventing rotation of said clamp around said rod.
3. In combination, a rod, a U-shaped clamp surrounding said rod, the arms of said clamp I being provided with registering holes, an
insulating member disposed between and extending beyond said arms, said insulating member having an opening registering with ch the openings in said arms, and a conducting member having a threaded shank passing through all of said openrngs.
4. In combination, a rod, a U-shaped clamp surrounding said rod, the arms of said clamp being provided With registering holes, an insulating member disposed between and extending beyond said arms, said insulating member having an opening registering with the openings in said arms, a conducting memher having a threaded shank passing through all of said openings, and means for preventing movement of said insulating member.
5. A switch comprising two stationary contacts each contact having a threaded shank, a pair of rods, a pair of ueshaped clamps one surrounding each rod, an insulating support disposed between the arms ofeach clamp,
said shanks on said Contact members passing through openings in the clamps and the insulating support.
In testimony whereof, the si the inventor is affixed hereto.
HERBERT 1V. CHENEY.
