FLUSH VALVE Filed Feb. 7, 1927 INVENTOR 1 J'ITORNEVS v Patentecl Nov. 12, 1929 ram 1. Amamm,- or LBATTLE OREEK, n1czmzm ILUBEE VALVE Lpplieation filed ii'ebruary 7, 1927. Serial 110.166,459,
The objects of this inventon are:
Firet, to provide such a structurewhch is a silnple and efiective hgh s;peed -devce thai; s economical to produce V i r Second to produce such a structure in Whieh the1 e are niproved auxliarystorage supply a=nd suctlon means to secure prompt fullaeton, and incidentally,to prevent Water ham'me a lhird, t 0 prqvide an improved Construction of toilet bowl xefill means for such a flush valve structure.
Objects pertainng to details and economies 01 construetion and operation Wll appear from the det-ailed descriPtion to follow. The invention s clearly defined in the clams.
A structure Whieh s a preferred embodmen-t of the inventon is llustrited in the acc ompanying drawing, in whch: N
Fig. 1 is a cliagrammatic view f my flush valve and auxiliary supply and cush-ioning means eonnected te a water closet bewl.
Fig. 2;1S an enlarged det-ail vertical seqtional elevation view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 8 i sa detail transverse horizontal section -taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2, che delivery coupling being shown in full lines, k
' Fig." 4 is detail sectional; levation view through the valve and i-ts plunger taken on line of Figs. 2 and 3. k k
Fg. 5 is a detail inveted sect0nal plan taken online 5-5 0f Fig. 4., With the guidng lugs for the valve in full linefs.
The parts of the drawing Will be identifiecl by theflnumerals which are the same in all views. f
1 is a vcloset bowl. 2 is my improvd valve casingl 3 is che delivery couplingfrom the 40 flush valve 130 -the closet. 4 is the supply pipe. 5 is the auxliary storage supply ancl cushion cylinder, and 6 s che connection for the pipes and ,elbovv to the flush valve, the same connecting through a reductiofl coupling 61 and coupling nut 62. I
7 is 'the valve ha'vx1g a rubbe'r fa'c 71 and is provrlegl with a centr'albore 7 2 inthe l'0wer part and a reduced bore 7 3 in che upfer part, arid across bore 74 in whch is an aju'stable sereW choke valve 7 5 for r.sstrictfig the passa'ge, 77 is the cross bere fox the r'fill valve struCture. 78 is' the r efill Valve Plug Which has a collar or head 78 fittihg lo'osely in the bere, and a light spring 7 8" tends to hol valve 78 open at a li t presisure. The valve seat 77 is of abou-t t 1e dia'mter Ofthe valve plug 78. A plug 8 cl'o'ses the end of the 'bo're 77 and ;provide s a stop for the valve plg 78 in its open ,poslton.
9 s the eylindrical flush valve ehanber. 10 is the hydralic eup packi'ng which reciprocates as a piston in the same ami is connected to the upper part of: the valve body 7, and reciprocates as a plunger in the pressure chamber 9. j e
A central coiled spring 11 tends to hold the valve 7 seated. ;The manually operatecl release valve 412 controls the passage into the spillvvay ehamber 91 from pressure chamber 9, This isoperaled by a ush pin 13 havng a button 131 held normafiy oubward by the spring 132. 134 is the valvebasing having a lateral p0rt 135 which opns into fthe spillway chamber 91, The area of the ,passage centrolled bythe valve 12 is muchin excess of lahe area di che choked bere 73111 che valve 7. H
The auxiliary supply end storage chanber or cylinder ami water cushion are conxprised in the casing 5 in which there is dsposed a plunger 51 with hyclraulic cup packi lhe plunger 51 Inoves against a group o coiled spring-s 52 Which abut on the head 54. Thls auxiliary supply chamber can be dsposed in any convenent placa between fioers, ent irely u concealed, ami yet it does its work elfecft-ivly and provides an auxilian storage supply for a larga initial volume e fl 0w wl1ich inSures prompt and complete flushin- Ine;id.entall.-
it also prevents the water ammar Whic often occurs vvth flash valves. My valve vvll operate with any anxilary supply if of sufficent size ancl pressare. F01 tl1e usnal size of Water closet bowl, a vert-cal three nch pipe wth olosecl upper end, to provide an ar cushon, sin feet in length s suficienc.
I-Iaving descrbed tl1e various parts of my nvention, I Wlll 110W indicate ther operation.
WVhen the release valve 12 s openecl, water confinecl in the pressare chamber 9 is free to flow tbrough theport 135 nto tbe spillway charnber 91 uncler urge of the hydraullc cup 10 carrecl by thevalve 7. The valve 7 end ls face 71 s rasecl from its seat bycbe pressure Of tl1e water thereon, tbe spring 12 beng nsuflcently strong to resst the pressure of the W2LBI confined in the auxlary supply cha1nber 5. The waterrushes by the valve 7 end through the spillway chamber 91 through the ppi1g 3 into the closet bowl where the nsual flushng takeS place. W'hen the manual pressare on che valve 12 is releasecl, varous reactons take place. Water passes through the central bere 2 end tbrough the choked boro 73, graclually filling the pressure chamber 9, tbe spring 12 mean-' vvhle havng focecl tl1e valve 7 and its face 71 onto ts seat as the pressure has been releasecl. I/Vh en thepresSure chamber 9 becomes fillecl, pressure gradually s bult up and acts upon the byclraulc cup 10, tbe bottorn of the face 71, Che back of the collar 7 8 on the valve plug 78 ancl che front of the collar 78 of tbe plug 78. As ths pressare gradually increases, the valve plug 78 s I"Orcecl to s seat 77 by a force equal to tl1e clference betvveen the combhecl pressure of the spring 78 plus fl1e pressure on tbe front of the collar 7 8 and the pressare ai: the back of the collar 78 reactng in the bere in front of the plug 8.
'As the area of the hydraulc cup 10 is greater than the area of the valve face 71, che dfierence in areas under the same pressure holcls the valve firmly aganst its seat and assures a tight seal.
It can be seen that the full react-On .of the pressure of the water on the valve plng 78 cahnot takeplaoe untl tl1e pressure ohamber 9 s completely fillecl, and that the pressure chamber 9 fills at a precletermined rate (leendng on adjustment of: the ch0ke in the bore 73. By this means the length of time water Wll flow past the valve plug 78 and into the spllway 91 after tbe valve 7 anclts face 71 has becomeseatecl, ancl consequently the volume of water, may be aecurately determined to compensate for varous water supply pressare.
\ s graclually ncreasecl durng che whole clesng perod due to the filling or" the auxilary chamber under n creasing pressure, due to the yelding cushon acton of that devce. The pressure ncrease continues after the The pressure, of cours'e,
n the trap. That is to say, the refill s re f qu1red.
I have descrbed 1ny invention in the detals whch I prefer. I desre to state that the valve parte can be used Will1 otber auxlary snpply ancl cushoning means and the oushomng means are avalable in other relations. I clesre io clam invention specifically as well as broaclly as ponted out in the appended clarns.
