LOCK FOR BABY CARRIAGE BAGKS Filed June l. 1927 T 1 5:4 T1 E: 5 F 25 I g 2 gvwnzntoz Patented Nov. 12, 1929 UNITED ySTATES PATENT OFFICE ELIAS sPEoTER, on BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AssIeNoR F ONE-HALE To BILT-RITE BABY CARRIAGE oo., oF BROOKLYN, N Ew YORK, A FIRM ooivirosnn or MYER s. *c yHARRISON AND ELIAS sPEcTER, ANB ONE-HALF 'roycoLLrER-KEYWORTII co., or
GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS `LOCK FOR BABY-CARRIAGE BACKS Application ined June *1, 1927. serial No. 195,839.
This invention relates to an improvement in a lock for a baby carriage back and the novelty resides in the adaptation and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinat'ter pointed out.
There are several types of locks in use for the backs of baby carriages, most of which rlock the back in the closed or open position but do so in a manner which does not insure any rigidity.
My device is adapted to lock the back of a'baby. carriage only in the closed position but does so in a wayk which absolutely insures the rigidity of 'said backin the locked position while permitting the back to vary in position when tilted back in the unlocked position.
It combines an effectiveness in locking in i the closedy position which has heretofore not been attained and is also ot' a simple and inexpensive construction peculiarly adapted to the problem to be solved.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a y vertical sectional view of a portion of a baby carriage frame and back hinged thereto showinginy complete devicey in lockedrrposition, portions being broken away for convenience in illustration.
Figure 2 is the same yas Figure 1 but show- 4ingmy device in the unlocked position.
t FigureV 3 'is a bottom plan view of the edge of they back, a portion being broken away for convenience in illustration. y
- Figure 4 is a perspective of the locking plate and Figure 5 is a perspective of the reenforcing plate. y
In the drawings 6 is a locking plate adapted to be secured at 7 in the usual well known manner to a baby carriage trame 8 and it has a slot 9 with two downturned guide plate members 10 bordering one end oit' the slot 9 and the opposite end o'll the slot 9 terminating in a downturned lip 11 constituting a part of the plate 6. A reenforcing plate 12 is rigidly secured in the usual well known manner at 13 to the base of a babycarriage back 14 so that the lower end of said plate 12 extends slightly below the lower end of the back 14 andsaid back 14 is hinged at 15 to the traine 8 in the usual well known manner. The trame 8 has a cut out portion 16 adapted to receive the projecting portions of the locking mechanism.
A locking bar 17 is mounted through the back 14 so that it will slide readily therethrough and in a Cut out portion 1S of said .Y
by means ot' cotter pin 22 which passes through said locking bar 17. The lower end of the locking bar 17 terminates in a i'lattened portion 23 adapted to pass through the slot 9 of the locking plate 6 and cylindrical pin 24 is rigidly secured through said flattened portion 23 and is adapted to hold the lower end of said locking bar 17 in the engaged position in said slot 9. On the upper end of the locking bar 17 is threaded in the usual well known manner a suitable handle 25.
In operating my device the locking bar which is under normal upward pressure due to the spring 19 pressing against the washer 21 causes a continuous normal pressure of the pinQs. on ythe underside of the two downturned guide plates 10 in the unlocked position as indicated in Figure 2. As the back 14 is restored to the closed position by pushing the same on the outer side thereby closingA hinges 15r the pin 24 will ride down on vthe downturned guide plates 1() until being under the spring pressure 19 the bar 17 is pulled by said spring 19 upwardly as the pin 24.- passes off of the inside ends of the guide plates 10 whereby saidpin 9A goes to the full locked position between the ends of the guide plates 10and the downturned lip 11 thereby holding ythe locking bar 17 rigidly in a locked position the downturned lip 11 so that the back 14 may be pulled backward on the hinges 15 and the `iattended portion 23 of the locking bar 17 will pass through the slot 9 and as the operator releases the pressure on the handle 25 the pin 24 will contact with the underside of the downturned guide plates 1Q whereby the bach 14 will be opened to the position as sli-own in Figure 2.
It is apparentV that the back 14 may have considerable play as to its position when unlocked due to the varyingvposition which may be taken by the pin 24 on the underside or' the downturned guide plates 1,0V and such variation in the position ot' the back 14 is mostdesirable in the use of av baby carriage and in tact this results in the back 14 assuming the particular position which may best accommodate the child in the baby carriage as seid child presses against the bach 14 when it is in its unlocked position.
It will apparent that many variations may be made in the actual structure of my device without departing from the spiritl and intent of the same.
I claim:
l. In a baby carriage back lockr the com bination oi a back, a locking bar mounted through said bach under constant upward spring tension, a cross iframe, a locking plate mounted rigidly in said cross trame having a slot with two downturned guide plates bordering one end olf said slot, a downturned lip terminating the opposite end of said slot, the lower end or' said locking bar passing through said slot and a cross pin securing itin said slot7 and a reenforcing plate rigidly secured to the inside lower edge opt the back so as to project slightly therefrom and bind against the locking plate.
2. ln a baby carriage bach lock the coinbination of a back, a locking bar mounted through said back under constant upward spring tension, a cross traine, a locking plate mounted rigidly in said cross trame having a slot with two downturned guide plates bordering onevend ot said slot, a downturned lip terminating the opposite end oi said slot, the lower end oit said locking bar movin said slot and limited by a cross pin eng in locked position between said doi 'ui-ned guide plates and lip and said crossr pin rolling on said guide plates in the unlocked position7 and a reentorcing plate rigidly secured to the inside lower edge of ,the back so as to project slightly therefrom and bind against the looking plate` 3. YIn a lock tor a hinged member. the coinbination oit a hinged member, a locking bar mounted through said hinged member under constant upward spring tension, a cross trame a lined member, a locking plate mounted rigidly in said cross frame on which the hinged member is mounted, a slot in said plate with two downturned guide plates bordering one end ot said slot, a downturned lip terminating the opposite end of said slot, the lower end of said locking bar passing through said slot and a cross pin securing it against removal from said slot and a reenforcing plate rigidly secured to the inside lower edge ot the hinged member so as to project slightly therefrom and bind against the locking plate.
4. In a loch for a hinged member the oombination oi a hinged member, alloc/king bar mounted through said hinged member under constant upward spring tension, a. cross frame in a fixed member, a locking plate mounted rigidly in said cross frame on which the hinged member is mounted, a slot in said plate with two downturned guide plates bordering one end of said slot, a downturned lip terminating the opposite end ot said slot, the lower end of said locking bar pas ing through said slot and a Cross pin securing it against/removal trom said slot, the lower end ot said locking bar moving in said lslot and limited by said erossv pin engaging in locked position between'said downturned guide plates and lip and said cross pin rolling on said guide platesV in the unlocked position. and a reent'orcingplate rigidly secured to the inside lower edge ot the hinged member so a. to project slightly therefrom and bind against the locking plate. i
5. In ababy carriage having a hinged back, a locking bar under constant downward pressure mounted therein and passing through a locking plate at` its lower end and having a cross pin near said lower end. said locking plate comprising a central slot with two downturned guide ilates bordering one end of said slot and a downturned lipr terminating the opposite end of said slot.
