My invention relates to a baby carriage and the novelty lies in the adaptation and arrangement of part-s as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.

In the coach type of baby carriage which has become so popular there is little or no room for placing eXtra coverings and Various other articles which must be used with a baby in the coach as the space is so limited.

l0 My carriage has solved this problem in furnishing a drawer which is mounted in the bottom of the carriage so that it is readily accessible to the person attending the baby.

In order to insure entire ease and comfort l5 to the child lying in the carriage a spring similar to a bed spring is most desirable but has not been found practical because of the limited space, if any space is tobe given to the eXtra equipment which must be always available. My device has solved this problem in mounting a spring immediately over an open drawer so that the spring has easy movement without interfering with the drawer, as only the open portion of the drawer lies immediately below said spring.

There are further advantages inmy device, notably in the combination locking feature of the adjustable back with the drawer.

Referring to the drawings Figure 1 isa side elevation of my device with the long handle broken off for convenience in illustration.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the body or coach portion of the same.

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the inside of the coach.

Figure 4 is an end view of the body looking at the same from the right hand en'd of Fig- -ure 1 and with a portion broken away to show the locking connections.

Figure 5 is a detailed sectional View of the locking mechanism. showing the two locking positions of the back of the coach.

Figure 6 is a top plan view of the drawer lock, part being broken away for convenience in illustration.

Figure 7 is a sectional view of the locking plate in the upper edge of the drawer on the line 7-7 of Figure 6.

In the drawings 10 is a coach or body suspended in the usual way on carriage springs 11 on the frame 12 which frame is mounted on two pairs of wheels 13 on axles at 14 in the well known manner. A strap 15 is secured to the bottom of the body 10 and around the frame 12 to limit the throw of said body 10. Near the lower part of the inside of the body 1() running entirely around the same is a supporting frame 16 on which are rigidly secured at either endplates 17 at 18 and the wire bed spring 19 of usual construction is secured in the usual well known manner to the plates 17 at either end and is supported in the middle by means of brackets 20 whichy are rigidly secured to either side of the frame 16 near the middle ot' the side portions of frame 16. A drawer 21 running on the usual side supporting arms 22 is mounted in the base of the body 10 sovthat more than onehalf of the bottom of the drawer 21 constitutes also the bottom of that portion of the body 10. A suitable handle 23 is rigidly secured to the drawer 21 to serve for the purpose of pushing in and out the drawer in use. i

A back 24 of the body 10 is hinged at 25 and a bolt 26 runs through the middle of said back 24 its entire Alength projecting through a slot 27 in the frame 16and a lock plate 28 inthe edge of drawer 21 has a bed 29 adapted to receive the lower end of the bolt.26. -A spring 30 is mounted over the bolt 26 so as f to be compressed when said bolt is pulled up by means of a handle 31 rigidly secured to its upper end whereby the bolt will'be thrown back to its engaged position when released under the spring tension. 1,6 having an upturned portion 33 and a hole 34in the flat portion 32 and a hole 35 in the upturned portion 33. This plate 32 is so mounted as to put the hole 34 in alignment with the slot 27 whereby the bolt`26 may pass there-` through as well as through theslotl 27 to engage the lock plate 28 when the back 24 is in theclosed position as shown in Figure 4.

The bolt 26 may be withdrawn from the lock plate 28, slot 27 and plate 32 by pulling up on the handle 31 and the back 24 may then be thrown down to the position shown in Figure 2 whereupon the bolt 26 will engage the hole 35 Ot' the upturned portion 33 of the vplate 32 thereby holding the back 24 rigidly in the open position shown in Figure 2. A hood 36 of usual construction is mounted on the body 10 at 37 and has the usual Collapsible extension arms. 38.

It will thus be seen that the baby when laid upon the spring 19 will have the full comfort of a bed spring as the drawer 21 being entirely open underneath the spring 19, will not interfere with the full operation of said spring 19 nor does the operation of the drawer 21 disturb the baby. On the other hand the attendant of the baby will have all of the necessary equipment which must be Carried with a baby readily available and accessible in the drawer 21 which can be readily disengaged from the bolt 26 engaged in the bed 29 of the locking plate 28 upon pulling the same with sufficient force to overcome the spring pressure on the bolt 26 or the back 24 may be swung down to the open position by pulling on thehandle 31 whereby the bolt 26 will be disengaged both 'from the locking plate 28 and the plate 32 and the bolt 26 may be released to engage the hole 35 in the upturned portion 33 of the plate 32 whereby theba'ck 24 will be locked rigidly in the open position .and the drawer 21 will be free to be operated regardless of the bolt 26.

It is important and should be not-ed that the arrangement of the drawer 21 with the spring 19 is such that they do not in any way interfere and a large portion of theL outer face of the drawer 21 serves the double ,purposeof completing the drawer as well as It will be apparent thatthe drawer 21 may be made in two portions so that onehalf may pull out at one end and the other half at the other end of the lower portion of the body 10 and many other variations .may be made in the arrangement of my device vwithout departing from, the spirit and intent of the invention.

I claim: y

1. Ina baby carriage the combination of a drawer mounted in and forming a substantial portion ot the end and bottom of said earriage, an adjustable seat back in said carriage and a single latching means carried thereby and engaging said drawer in its closed position.

2. In a baby carriage the combination of a drawer mounted in and forming a substantial portion of the end and bottomvof said carriage, a pivoted seat back, said drawer and ,baek operating independently of each other, l

means for latching said back in an open and closed position and means in said drawer Cooperating with said latching means effecting the latching of said drawer simultaneously with the latching of said back in the closed position. 1

3. In a baby carriage the combination of a drawer mounted in and forming a substantial portion ot the end and bottom ot' said carriage, an adjustable seat back in said carriage," said drawer and back operating independently ot' each other, an angular latching plate, and a single means for latehing said back and drawer in their closed positions comprising a bolt under downward spring tension running through said bach and back latching plate and adapted to engage the upper and outer edge of said drawer.
