Description

Nov. 12, 1929. c. H. FREDERICK 1,735,040
ADVERTISING SIGN Filed March 19, 1928 Patented Nov. 12, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHARLES H. FREDERICK, OF BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO INGRAM- RICHARDSON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA- A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA ADVERTISING SIGN Application filed March 19, 1928. Serial No. 262,637.
My invention relates to illuminated advertising signs.
It is the object of this invention to provide a sign which has portions illuminated directly by electric lamps and other portions illuminated by reflected light emitted from the lamps. Another object is to produce a sign of the character described which is'simple, etlicient, and relatively cheap to manufacture.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a sign made in accordance with my invention and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section thereof.
The advertising matter is carried by the large central vertical plate 10, and the name of the advertiser is carried by the smaller vertical plates 11 and 12 arranged at opposite sides of the plate 10. These plates are pendent from end frames, each comprisinga pair of members or units made of strips of metal bent into predetermined shape. The members composing the pairs are identical in shape. Each member comprises two vertical parallel legs 13 and 1 1, the latter extending downwardly somewhat below the former. The upper ends of the legs 13 and 14 are integral with the upwardly converging sec tions 15 and 16 meeting at the angle 17.
At each end of the sign a pair of frame members are arranged with the outer faces of the legs 13 opposite each other. The upper edge of the late 10 is secured between the lower part 0 the legs by rivets or bolts 18. Vertical strips of metal 19 called hangers, have their lower ends secured between the upper portions of the legs 13 by the rivets or bolts 20, the upper ends of the hangers having eyes 21 in which devices may be inserted for suspending the sign.
The upper, faces of the frame sections 15 are covered by the plates 22 which extend from one pair of end frames to the other.
The plates 12 are attached to the outer sides of the legs 14, but do'not reach to the upper ends of the legs, there being open spaces 23 between the upper edges of the plates 12 and the lower edges of the sections 16. I
I provide a sheet metal cover or hood 24: extending from one pair of frame members to the other. This hood has a horizontal section 25 lying over the plates 22 and downwardly and outwardly extending sections 26 lying on the frame sections 16 and projecting somewhat beyond the same to the angle 27.
From the angles 27 the hood extends vertically downwards forming the sections 28.
The hood has the end members 29 (only one shown) extending down to the bottom of the hood sections 28. The end members may have their upper edges overlapping the hood as shown at 29.
The plates 22 support electric lamps 30 projecting into the space between the plates 15 and the adjacent hood sections 26. Light from the lamps shines directly on both sides of the large advertising plate 10. Light also shines against the reflecting surfaces on the backs or inner surfaces of the plates 11 and 12, whence it is reflected upon the plate 10. Light passes through the spaces 23 and is reflected from the inner faces of the hood members 28 upon the outer faces of the plates 11 and 12. Light reflects also from the plates 15 upon the plate 10, the back of the plates 11 and 12, and the inner faces of the hood members 28, whereby the plates 10, 11 and 12 are further illuminated by reflection of light from the lamps.
Both sides of the plate 10 will bear advertising matter while the outer faces of the plates 11 and 12 will bear the names of the advertisers. However, the plates may bear matter other than that provided herein.
I claim- In a sign, pairs of frame members at each end thereof, each member comprising a central vertical pendent leg, a laterally, and upwardly converging sections having their lower ends united to the said legs respectively, a central advertising plate secured between the two central legs of each pair of members, a lateral advertising plate attached to the lateral legs of the members, a hood covering the plates and having upwardly converging portions attached to some of the said sections of the frame members, downwardly converging plates attached to the remaining of said sections, lamps supported by the last named plates and projecting in the spaces above the advertising plates, and reflector members arranged beyond the lateral plates so as to reflect light from the lamps upon the exterior faces of the lateral plates, there being spaces for light between the hood and the upper edges of the lateral plates.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
CHARLES H. FREDERICK.
