  • My invention relates to mining machines. It has for its object to provide an improved and simplified mining machine, and especially one of the entry driving type which is adapted to use at will either as a horizontal cutter, a vertical cutter, or to cut at any intermediate angle. More particularly, my invention has for its object to provide an im proved and simplified machine of compact and rugged construction and one equipped with improved and simplified controlling and adjusting mechanism.

My invention relates to mining machines. It has for its object to provide an improved and simplified mining machine, and especially one of the entry driving type which is adapted to use at will either as a horizontal cutter, a vertical cutter, or to cut at any intermediate angle. More particularly, my invention has for its object to provide an im proved and simplified machine of compact and rugged construction and one equipped with improved and simplified controlling and adjusting mechanism. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construction will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.

In this illustrative construction I have shown a machine of the type described and claimed in my copending application, Serial No. 210,696, filed Jan. 7, 1918, the same being improved and simplified in certain of its features.
As shown in these drawings, it will be observed that a rear truck frame 1 is suitably mounted on truck wheels 2 movable over the mine track 3, the wheels 2 being rotatably mounted upon the ends 4 of drop axles 5 of a usual construction and adapted to be driven through usual driving connections, such as the chain and sprocket connections 6, 7, from a motor 8 located on the rear end of the frame 1 and preferably adjacent a platform 9 on that frame. It will also be observed that this motor 8, and therefore the movement of the truck frame 1, is adapted to be suitably controlled or reversed through the provision of a suitable controller 10.
Disposed within this frame 1 and pivotall mounted on opposite sides thereof, and pref erably above the front axles, upon suitable inwardly disposed pivot members 11 herein shown as removably attached to the axles by means of set screws 12, is a supplemental pivoted frame 13 which, as shown, normally eX- tends beyond the front end of the frame 1 and is provided with parallel longitudinally disposed guiding members 14 having their guiding surfaces disposed in a horizontal plane and cooperating to form a longitudinally disposed guiding way. As illustrated, this frame is adapted to be adjusted, by any suit- 85 able means, about the pivot members 11 to vary the elevation of its front end. As shown herein, it will be noted that these connections are located at the extreme rear end of the frame 13, and that they assume the form of an adjustable nut 15 rotatable relative to an upstanding threaded member 16 pivoted at 17 on the frame 1, in such a manner as to depress or elevate an extension 18 preferably carried on the rear end of the frame 13. 95
As illustrated, supported on these guiding members 14 and disposed between the same and between the sides of the frame 13, is a sliding frame 19 which, as shown, is preferably provided, at its four corners, with suitable laterally extended guiding members 20 having surfaces adapted to overlie the horizontal surfaces of the members 14 and to receive corresponding flanges 21 formed on these guiding members. As shown, it will also be noted that carried by the frame 19 is a motor 22 and this motor 22 is so disposed that its axis is substantially in the same plane with the flanges 21 so that an exceedingly compact construction is produced in which the weight is relatively close to the ground and the height of the mechanism is such as to permit the machine to be used at will in entries having a relatively low roof.
Opcratively connected to the motor improved mechanism for feeding the sliding frame and the cutting mechanism carried thereby relative to the guiding members 14. These means, as shown, are preferably operatively connected to the rear end of the armature shaft 23, as for instance through a plurality of gears 24,25 and a bevel pinion 26 constantly meshing with cooperating reverse bevel gears 27, which in turn are connectable at will with a suitable vertical shaft 28, under the control of a suitable clutch 29. As illustrated, this shaft 28 in turn carries a pinion 30 on its upper end controlled by a suitable well known friction clutch or so called friction 31 and meshing with a larger gear 32 journaled on a lateral vertical shaft 33 which is itself suitably journaled on the sliding frame 19. This gear 32 in turn drives a smaller gear 34 carried on a rear vertical shaft 35, which is geared to a feed driving member or sprocket 36 by means of gears 37 and 38, the driving connection being controlled by a clutch 39.
Cooperating with this feed driving sprocket 36 is a liexible feeding member, herein shown in the form of a chain 40 disposed about the feed sprocket, and suitable guiding sprockets 41 located on opposite sides of the same and, in the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, having one end extending rearward around a cooperating guiding sprocket 42 carried on the member 20 at the rear left hand corner of the sliding frame to an adjacent chain fork 43; while its other end extends around a cooperating guiding sprocket 44 on the opposite member 20 and forward along that side of the frame, past cooperating guiding sprockets 45 and 46 on the members 20 on that side of the motor and to a chain fork 47 carried at the front corner of the frame 13. As shown, a plurality of chain forks 43 and 47 and guiding sprockets 45 and 46 are provided on opposite sides of the frame so that when desired the feed chain 40 may be reversely reeved. Obviously, through the control of suitable well known controlling mechanism, such as the friction controlling lever 48, the rotation of the feed sprocket 36, and therefore the feeding of the chain 40, may be controlled as desired.
Likewise operatively connected to the motor through its armature shaft 23, is improved mechanism for operating the cutting mechanism. As shown, this mechanism is operatively connected to the front end of the armature shaft and includes a bevel pinion 49 meshing with a cooperating larger bevel gear 50 j ournaled on a transverse axis, in a swivel head 51 and rotating a smaller pinion 52 which in turn meshes with a larger gear 53 fixed to a cutter chain driving shaft 54. As shown, a cutter chain driving sprocket 55 is suitably journaled on a sleeve 56 splined on the lower end of the shaft 54 at 57, said sleeve having slidable thereon in splined relation thereto a clutch element provided with suitable clutch teeth 58 adapted to engage cooperating clutch teeth 59 formed on the sprocket, when a clutch shipper 60 is operated in a suitable manner. As in the usual construction, it will be observed that a cutter chain 61 is disposed about this driving sprocket 55, and a cooperating driving sprocket (not shown) on the front end of a cutter bar 62, in such a manner that it may be rotated about the bar and cause its cutter bits 63 to cut a kerf in the coal.
Operatively connected to the motor 22 is also improved mechanism for rotating the cutting mechanism bodily about a longitudinal axis in such a manner as to enable the latter to operate in intersecting planes. As shown, this means is operatively connected to the rear end of the armature shaft and also controlled through the friction 31, the same including a bevel pinion 64 carried on the upper end of the laterally disposed upright shaft 33. As shown, this pinion 64 constantly meshes with a plurality of oppositely disposed bevel pinions 65, which are spaced apart and adapted to be alternately connected to a longitudinally disposed driven shaft 66 by means of a suitable clutch 67 operable by a clutch controlling member 68. In the form of my invention illustrated, it will also be noted that the front end of this shaft 66 carries a worm 69 meshing with a cooperating worm gear 70 which is in turn carried upon an upright shaft 71. This shaft 71 also carries a worm 72 on its lower end which meshes with a worm gear 73, enclosed within a suitable front head 74 on the motor casing, and extending around and fixed to the swivel head 51. Thus it will be observed that by a simple adjustment of the lever 68, and under the control of the friction 31, the operator may rotate the swivel head 51 with its cutting mechanism in such a manner as to bring the cutter bar 62 into either vertical or horizontal position, or into any intermediate position.
In my improved construction it will also be observed that whenever the operator desires to do so he may adjust the swivel head and its attached bar by hand, as for instance when making an adjustment during the bar swinging movementas hereinafter brought out, this mechanism being operable whenever the clutch 67 is in neutral position. In this form of my invention it will be noted that this improved hand operating mechanism in eludes a ratchet wheel fixed to the shaft 66 and enclosed in a suitable casing 76 journaled on the shaft 66, and a co-operating ratchet Wheel actuating mechanism, herein disclosed in the form of a lever 77 formed integral with the casing, a suitable reciprocating pawl 78 preferably being normally projected into disengaged position by means of a spring 79, and having a push button 80 so that, whenever desired. the operator may press in the pawl and by movement of the lever thus rotate the shaft and the swivel head adjusting mechanism connected thereto.
Also operatively connected to the motor is improved mechanism for swinging the cutter bar 62 relative to the motor frame and about its inner end as a pivot. As shown, the inner end of the cutter bar is supported in a suitable frame 81 journaled at its lower end on the exterior of a bearing member 82 in which the shaft 54 is journalcd, the member 82 preferablv being integral with a suitable casing 83 enclosing the cutter shaft driving gearing. and itself preferably integral with the swivel head 51. These swinging means include a shaft 84, preferably rotatable with the shaft 54 and carrying a worm 85. This worm, as shown. preferably meshes with a worm gear 86 disposed substantially midway between the ends of a transverse stub shaft 87 journaled in a suitable casing 88 and having a large gear 89 mounted to one end thereof and a small gear 90 mounted on the opposite end thereof. the several gears being adapted to be connected at will to the shaft by means of a clutch mechanism 91 of any well known construction and herein shown as splined to the shaft 87. As shown, the gear 89 also meshes with a smaller gear 92 carried on one end of a parallel stub shaft 93 suitably journaled in the casing 88. while the gear 90 meshes with a larger gear 94 carried on the opposite end of that shaft. Disposed between these gears 92 and 91, is also provided a worm 95. which in turn meshes with a worm gear 96 carried on the upper end of a vertically disposed shaft 97 having its upper end journaled in suitable bearings in the casing 88 and its lower end journaled in the frame 81, the casing 88 and the latter preferably being rigidly connected. and the casing 88 prefer ably being provided with bearing surfaces 98 on its upper end so that it may rotate with the bar and frame 81 about suitable bearing members 99 carried by the casing 83 and coax'iallv disposed with the bearing member 82. Fixedly connected to this shaft 97 at a point intermediate its ends, is, as shown, preferably also a pinion 100, in turn meshing with an arcuate rack 101 fixed to and extending around the front end of the casing 83. Thus, it will be observed that when the clutch mechanism 91 is suitably operated the bar may be swung in either direction about its inner end as a pivot, in such a manner as to swing the cutter bar either to the right or left as the pinion 100 travels to the right or left relative to the arcuate rack 101. As herein illustrated. it will be observed that this clutch mechanism 91 is adapted to be controlled through a single controlling member 102. It will also be observed that a supplemental clutch 103 is provided between the upper end of the shaft 97 and the worm gear 96, this clutch being controlled by a suitable controlling lever 104 and adapted to connect or disconnect the power swinging mechanism at will.
In my improved construction it will also be noted that improved means are provided whereby. if desired. the swinging of the bar 62 may be brought about through utilization of the feeding mechanism operatively connected to the rear end of the armature shaft, and controlled by controlling mechanism for the feed sprocket. More specifically, it will be noted that in the form of my invention illustrated. means are provided in the form of a chain fork 105 disposed on the front end of the casing 88. so that when desired the front end of the chain 40 may be disconnected from the chain fork at the front end of the guiding member then in use and connected to this chain fork. and the feeding mechanism operated in such a manner as either to swing the bar alone or to assist the power swinging mechanism, above described, in making the swinging operation. This mechanism I find of particular assistance in making the horizontal cut, the same or'linarily being unnecessary in making the vertical cut. as therein the weight of the bar tends to assist the power swinging mechanism in the movement of the bar] In describing the operation of my improved construction. reference is made to the diagrammatic illustrations shown in Figs. 9. 10. 11, 12. and 13, wherein it will be noted that the machine is shown operating as either a horizontal cutter or a vertical or shear cutter. Referring first to Fig. 9. wherein the machine is shown to be operating as a horizontal cutter. it will be noted that the bar (32 is first swung to the left in the usual manner when making a sumping cut, in accordance with the arcwall method, this being readily acconu'ilished by operation of the swinging mechanism above described and controlled by the members 102, 104. Vith the bar in this position. the motor body 19 is next reciprocatcd under the control of the controlling mechanism for the feed sprocket 36 and relative to the longitudinal guides 14 in such a manner as to cause the bar to be sumped into the coal in the position shown in Fig. 9. Preferably during this sumping operation the machine frame 1 is suitably fixed to the track, herein, for instance, by means of suitable jacks 106 disposed at its opposite ends and preferably at the opposite sides of its ront end. Then the bar is swung from the full line position illustrated in that figure around in an arc to the dotted line position shown in that figure, in the well known manner of operating in accordance with the Obviously. if desired, this swinging movement may be accomplished by means of suitable control of the controlling mechanism 102, 103 controlling the power operating swinging mechanism, or through a suitable control of the feed sprocket controlling mechanism after the feed chain 4-0 has been connected to the chain fork 105; or, if desired. the two means of swinging the bar may be operated simultaneously, should conditions so require. After the swinging out has thus been made, the final step in the arcwall method of cutting is made. the bar when in its dotted line position being retracted through a bodily rearward movement of the motor body 19 relative to its supporting frame. Obviously, after the cut has thus been made the bar may he swung into a position disposed longitudinally of the track, and the machine transported to another place.
Vhen it is desired to use the machine for shearing (Fig. 10), the same may be readily adjusted in such a manner as to be adapted to that operation, by a simple manipulation of the clutch controlling member 68 in such a manner as to rotate the bar from the horizontal position used in horizontal cutting to the vertical position used in shear cutting, the swivel head 51 then being rotated in its bearing in the motor casing in such a manner as to bring the bar into vertical position. Obviously, when the bar has assumed this position the process of inserting it into the coal and making the arcwall cut will be substantially identical with that described above in connection with the horizontal cut, although in this instance it will be noted that when the initial cut is made near the roof of the entry the weight of the bar assists the power feeding mechani m in such a manner as to render any assistance by the feed chain unnecessary during the swinging operation. Referring more particularly to Fig. 11, it will there be noted that by means of the tilting mechanism including the nut 15 and its cooperating parts, the frame 13 may be so adjusted relative to the frame 1 as to cause the bar to be dipped downward at its front end and out upon the bottom, thereby eliminating any necessity for the removal in a separate operation of the coal which would otherwise underlie the cutter bar. Here attention is also directed to the fact that when it is desired, by a simple reverse movement of this tilting mechanism, i. e. a reverse movement of the nut 15, the front end of the cutter bar may be tilted upward in such a manner as to enable the machine to follow an inclined seam. Attention is also directed to the fact that through the utilization of my improved hand operated mechanism for turning the swivel head, and my improved mechanism for swinging the bar, it is possible to cause a compound movement of the bar whereby the same is simultaneously turned relative to the horizontal and swung, and thereby cut on the bottom during by far the greater part of the entire swinging movement or cut around an obstruction.
It will be noted that means are provided whereby the machine may be used as desired either as an over cutter or under cutter, or to shear on opposite sides of the center line (Figs. 12 and 13), it only being necessary to rotate the head through one half revolution in order to change its character. It will also be evident that by rotating the head the cutter bar may be similarly adjusted into any intermediate position when desired. By the use ofmy improved construction it will also be noted that a machine is produced wherein a substantial supporting and guiding surface is provided relative to which the machine may be moved during its longitudinal movement while either cutting a horizontal or a shear cut. It will also be observed that the offset of the cutting mechanism relative to the axis upon which the same turns is minimized. At tention is also directed to the fact that due to this reduction of the offset in my improved construction the machine is adapted to shear on either side of the center line of the entry and within the limits of the guides. So far as the feeding mechanism is concerned, it will also be observed that through the arrangement of the flexible feeding mechanism the construction is such as to compensate for side thrust during the feeding operation, the feeding means acting in a line extending longitudinally at a point between the axis of the bar and the working outer end thereof. These and other advantages of my improved construction will, however, be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
In the appended claims the terms longitudinal and transverse are used, with reference to axes, in the sense of extending longitudinally of the'machine as a whole, or transversely of the machine as a whole, unless otherwise plainly indicated in the claims themselves.
lVhile I have in this application specifical ly described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form is shown herein for purposes of illustration only, and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a minin machine, a transport frame including a horizontally disposed forwardly projecting guiding way, a motor rcciprocale thereon, and cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and includ ing a pivotally mounted cutter chain carrying cutter bar swinging in a plane below the plane of said way and parallel thereto.
2. In a mining machine, a frame movable on a trackway and including laterally spaced forwardly projecting guiding members of like elevation, a motor reciprocable along said guiding members and cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivoted cutter chain carryin cutter bar horizontally swinging below the plane of said guiding members and movable across an end thereof.
3. In a mining machine, a frame movable on a trackway and including laterally spaced guiding members lying respectively at opposite sides of a vertical plane, a motor reciprocable along said guiding members, a swivel head operatively connected to the front of said motor, and cutting mechanism operatively connected to said head and to said motor including a pivotally mounted cutter chain carrying cutter bar horizontally swinging below the plane of said guiding members.
4. In a mining machine, a frame movable on a trackway and including a horizontally disposed open-ended guiding way providing horizontal guide surfaces at opposite sides of the longitudinal center line of the machine, a motor reciprocable along said guiding way, and cutting mechanism 0 eratively connected to said motor and inc uding a pivotally mounted cutter bar swinging in a plane below the plane of said way, the axis of pivoting of said cutter bar lying to the rear of the open end of said way when said motor is at the rear end of said way.
5. In a mining machine, a frame movable on a trackwa and including a horizontally disposed gui ing way, a motor reciprocable along said guiding way, and cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted cutter chain carrying cutter bar swinging in a plane below and parallel to the plane of said way and adapted to be swung across the front end thereof.
6. In a mining machine, a frame movable on a trackwa and including a horizontally disposed ui ing way, a motor reciprocable along sai way, and cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted cutter chain carrying cutter bar swinging below the plane of said way in a plane substantially parallel to said plane and adapted to be swung in different planes across the front end thereof.
7. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having guiding means, cutting mechanism rectilinearly reciprocable thereon and comprising a cutter chain carrying cutter bar normally swinging in a plane parallel to and below the plane of said guiding means and driving means for said cutter chain including a reciprocable motor whose axis of rotation is always parallel to the plane of the orbit of said chain, and means for supporting said cutter bar in different planes.
8. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having guiding means, cutting mechanism rectilinearly reciprocable thereon and comprising a pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar normally swinging in a plane parallel to and below the plane of said guiding means and a reciprocable driving motor having a horizontal axis of rotation, and means for supporting said cutter bar in different planes.
9. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having guiding means, cutting mechanism rectilinearly reciprocable thereon and comprising a pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar normally swinging in a plane parallel to and below the plane of said guiding means and a reciprocable driving motor having a horizontal axis of rotation, means for supporting said cutter bar in different planes, and actuating means for swinging said cutter bar.
10. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having guiding means, cutting means rectilinearly reciprocable thereon and comprising a pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar normall swinging in a plane parallel to and below t 1e plane of said guiding means, means for supporting said cutter bar in different planes, and a single actuating means for swinging said cutter bar and for moving it into different planes.
11. In a mining machine, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed guiding means, and cutting mechanigm movable bodily longitudinally of said means and comprising an independently pivoted cutter-chain carrying cutter bar disposable in a plane parallel to and above the plane of said guiding means and in an intersecting plane and a driving motor for said cutter chain movable longitudinally of said guiding means on similar movement of said cutter bar and having the axis of rotation thereof always parallel to the plane of said cutter chain.
12. In a mining machine, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed guiding means thereon whose trace in a vertical plane to which the trackway is perpendicular is horizontal, and cutting mechanism movable bodily longitudinally of said means and comprising an independently piv oted cutter chain carrying cutter bar disposable in a plane parallel to and below the plane of said guiding means and in an intersecting plane making an angle with the guiding means and a driving motor for said cutter chain movable longitudinally of said guiding means on similar movement of said cutter bar and having the axis of rotation thereof always parallel to the plane of said cutter chain.
13. In a mining machine, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed lateraily spaced guidin means, and cutting mechanism movable b0 ily longitudinally of said means to cut in advance of said machine and comprising an independently pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar disposable in a plane intersecting the plane of said guiding means between the latter and in a line parallel to the length of said frame.
14. In a mining machine, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed guiding means thereon whose trace on a vertical plane to which the trackway is perpendicular is horizontal, and cutting mechanism movable bodily longitudinally of said means and' comprising an independently pivoted plane cutter chain carrying cutter bar disposable in a plane perpendicular to the plane of said guiding means or in a plane parallel to the plane of the latter and movable either between the ends of said guiding means or beyond the end thereof.
15. In a mining machine, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed guiding means thereon whose trace on a vertical plane to which the trackway is perpendicular is horizontal, cutting mechanism movable longitudinally of said means and including an independently pivoted swinging cutter chain carrying cutter bar reciprocable on said guiding means to a position wholly in front of said wa 's and to a position partially to the rear of t e front end thereof having its pivot adjustable about an axis transverse thereto into intersecting plane whose line of intersection is parallel to said ways 16. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable, on a trackway and having horizontally disposed guiding means thereon and whose trace on a vertical plane to which the trackway is perpendicular is horizontal, and cutting mechanism reciprocable thereon and operative during such reciprocation to make a cut disposed directly in front thereof and comprising an independently pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar movable in a plane about a pivot in turn disposed transversely to and angularly adjustable on a longitudinal axis, the pivotal axis of said cutter bar being movable between positions one of which lies between the ends of said guiding means and the other of which lies beyond one of said ends.
17. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having laterally spaced horizontally disposed guiding means, and cutting mechanism bodily movable longitudinally of said means and comprising an independently pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar disposable in a plane extending between said guiding means and in one position of said cutting mechanism relative to said frame itself extending between said guides.
18. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having laterally spaced horizontally disposed guiding means, and cutting mechanism bodily movable longitudinally of said means and comprising an independently pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar disposable in different planes extending between said guiding means and itself disposable between said guiding means in certain positions.
19. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed guiding means thereon whose trace on a vertical plane to which the trackway is perpendicular is horizontal, and pivotally mounted cutting mechanism bodily movable longitudinally of said means and presenting a cutter chain carrying cutter bar swinging in a plane and relative to said guiding means and power operated means for varying the inclination of said plane to the horizontal to provide traces on a horizontal plane parallel to the trackway on which said frame moves.
20. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed guiding means thereon whose trace on a vertical plane to which the trackway is perpendicular is horizontal, and pivotally mounted cutting mechanism bodily movable longitudinally of said means and presenting a cutter chain carrying cutter bar positionable to swing in intersecting planes and relative to said guiding means, said bar swinging about a pivot member whose projection on the plane of said guiding means always lies between lines coincident with the latter.
21. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed guiding means thereon whose trace on a vertical plane to which the trackway is perpendicular is horizontal, pivotally mounted cutting mechanism bodily movable longitudinally of said means and presenting a cutter chain carrying cutter bar swinging in a plane and relative to said guiding means, and means for adjusting the plane of said guiding means about an axis parallel to but offset from said plane.
In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed open ended guiding means, and cutting mechanism movable bodily longitudinall v thereon and including an independently pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar movable during such longitudinal movement in a plane extending through the open end of said guiding means or in an intersecting plane.
23. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed open ended guiding means, and cutting mechanism movable bodily longitudinally thereon and including an independently pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar movable during such longitudinal movement in a plane extending through the open end of said guiding means or in a plane parallel to the plane of the latter.

In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed open ended guiding means, and cutting mechanism movable bodily longitudi nally thereon and including an independently pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar movable during such longitudinal movement in a plane extending through the open end of said guiding means or in a plane above the plane of the latter.
25. In a mining apparatus, a frame movable on a trackway and having horizontally disposed open ended guiding means. and cutting mechanism movable bodily longitudinally thereon and including an independently pivoted cutter chain carrying cutter bar movable during such longitudinal movement in a plane extending through the open end of said guiding means or in a plane below the plane of the latter.
26. In a mining machine, a wheeled frame including lateral.y spaced guiding members disposed in substantially the same horizontal planes, a motor reciproeable along said members, a swivel head operatively connected to said motor, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said head and to said motor and including a pivotally mounted cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members. and means for swinging said bar relative to said swivel head.
27. In a mining machine, a wheeled frame including laterally spaced guiding members disposed at opposite sides of the longitudinal center line of the frame, a motor reciproeable therealong, a coaxially disposed swivel head operatively connected to said motor, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said head and to said motor and including a pivotally mounted cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members, and means for swinging said bar relative to said swivel head.
28. In a mining machine, a wheeled frame including laterally spaced guiding members, a motor rccipro 'able thereon. cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members, and mean for at will inverting said cutter bar without change of location of said motor.
29. In a mining machine, a wheeled frame including laterally spaced guiding members of like elevation. a motor reciproeable thereon, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members, and means for at will disposing said bar in hori zontal or vertical position without alteration in position of said motor.
30. In a mining machine, a wheeled frame including laterally spaced guiding members, a motor rcciprorable thereon, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivota ly mounted cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members, and means for at will disposing said bar in vertical position on opposite sides of the axis of said motor without alteration in position of said motor.
31. In a mining machine, a transport frame including laterally spaced guiding members, a motor reciproeable thereon, cutting mechanism operativcly connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members, and means for inverting said bar or disposing the same in vertical position on opposite sides of the axis of said motor without change in position of said motor.
32. In a mining machine, a transport frame including laterally spaced guiding members lying respectively at opposite sides of a vertical plane. a motor reciprocable thereon, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said uiding members, means for swinging said bar about its pivot, and means for rotating said bar bodily about a longitudinally disposed axis without change of position of said motor.
33. In a mining machine, a transport frame including laterally spaced guiding members of like elevation, a motor reciproeable thereon, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted plane cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members, and means operativcly connected to said motor and said bar for disposing the latter by power in a plane at an angle to the plane of said guiding members.
34. In a mining machine. a transport frame including laterally spaced guiding members disposed at opposite sides of the longitudinal center line of the frame, a motor reciproeable thereon. cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted plane cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members, means operatively connected to said motor and said bar for adjusting the pivot of said bar by power from said motor, and means for swinging said bar about its pivot.
35. In a mining machine, a transport frame including laterally spaced guiding members of similar elevation, a motor recip rocable thereon, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted plane cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members, means operatively connected to said motor and said bar for angularly adjusting the pivot of said bar by power from said motor, and means operatively connected to said motor for swinging said bar about its pivot.
36. In a mining machine, a Wheeled frame including laterally spaced forwardly projecting guiding members lying respectively at opposite sides of a vertical plane, a motor reciprocable thereon, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted cutter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members, means for swinging said bar about its pivot, and hand operated means for disposing said bar in a plane at an angle to the plane of said guiding members, the intersection of said planes being a line parallel to and between said guiding members.
37. In a mining machine, a wheeled frame including laterally spaced guiding members disposed in substantially the same horizontal planes, a motor reciprocable thereon, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivotally mounted cut-.
ter bar horizontally disposed below the plane of said guiding members, means for swinging said bar about its pivot, and selective hand or power operated means for disposing said bar in a plane at an angle to the plane of said guiding members.
38. In a mining machine, a truck, a wheeled frame thereon having laterally spaced upstanding guiding members respectively lying at opposite sides of a vertical plane, a motor reciprocable along said guiding members and disposed between the same, means for reciprocating said motor, and cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a cutter bar horizontally disposed in a plane below said guiding members.
39. In a mining machine. a frame having a horizontally disposed guiding way, a motor reciprocable along said way, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a cutter chain-carrying cutter bar disposed in a plane below and parallel to the plane of said way, and feeding mechanism operatively connected between said motor and said frame for sumping said bar into the face at a uniform angle to the latter.
40. In a mining machine, a frame having a horizontally disposed guiding way, a motor reciprocable along said way, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said m0- tor and including a cutter chain carrying cutter bar disposed in a plane below said way, and flexible feeding mechanism including a flexible feeding member operatively connected between said motor and said frame for sumping said bar into the face.
41. In a mining machine, a frame having a longitudinally disposed guiding way, a motor reciprocable longitudinally of said way, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a cutter chain carrying cutter bar disposed below the plane of said way, and flexible feeding mechanism operatively connected between said motor and the'opposite ends of said frame for reciprocating said motor relative to the latter.
42. In a mining machine, a frame having a longitudinally disposed guiding way, a motor reciprocable longitudinally of said way, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a cutter bar disposed below the plane of said way, and flexible feeding mechanism operatively connectable at will between said motor and the diagonally opposite corners of said frame for reciprocating said motor relative to the latter.
43. In a mining machine, a frame having a longitudinally disposed guiding way, a motor reciprocable along said Way, cutting mechanism including a cutter chain carrying cutter bar pivotally connected adjacent the front end of said motor and disposed in a horizontal plane below said way, and flexible feeding mechanism operatively connected between said motor and said frame and including a flexible feeding portion extending longitudinally to a point adjacent the axis of said bar.
44. In a mining machine, a frame having a longitudinally disposed guiding way, a motor reciprocable along said way, cutting mechanism including a cutter chain carrying cutter bar pivotally connected adjacent the front end of said motor and disposed in a horizontal plane below said way, and flexible feeding mechanism operatively connected between said motor and said frame and including a flexible feeding portion extending longitudinally parallel to the axis of said motor.

In a mining machine, a frame having a longitudinally disposed way, a motor reciprocable along said way, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor including a cutter bar, feeding mechanism operatively connected to said motor for feeding the latter along said way, and means operatively connectable with certain of the elements of said feeding mechanism for bodily rotating said bar about a longitudinal axis.
46. In a mining machine, a frame having a longitudinally disposed guiding way, a motor reciprocable longitudinally of said way, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a cutter chain carrying cutter bar movable into different planes and adapted to be swung in each plane,

In a mining machine, a supporting frame movable along a trackway, a motor thereon having its axis horizontal and parallel to the length of said frame, cutting mechanism operatively connected to the motor and including a plane cutter bar pivoted on an axis perpendicular to the axis of said motor and rotatable bodily about the latter axis whereby the intersection of the former axis with the bar may trace a circle to whose plane the motor axis is perpendicular, and means for feeding said bar longitudinally into the work when said bar pivot axis is in any of its positions including a flexible feeding member opcratively connected to the motor and to a fixed point adjacent the work and for causing said bar to thereafter make an arcuate. cut on connection of said flexible member to said bar.

In a mining machine, a supporting frame movable along a trackway, a motor thereon having its axis horizontal and parallel to the length of said frame, cutting mechanism operatively connected to the motor and including a plane cutter bar pivoted on an axis perpendicular to the axis of said motor and rotatable by power from said motor bodily about the latter axis whereby the intersection of the former axis with the bar may trace a circle to whose plane the motor axis is parallel, and means for feeding said bar longitudinally into the work when said bar pivot axis is in any of its positions including a flexible feeding member operatively connected to the motor and to a fixed point adjacent the work and for causing said bar thereafter to make an arcuate cut on connection of said flexible member to said bar.
64. In a mining machine, a supporting frame movable along a trackway, a motor thereon having its axis horizontal and parallel to the length of said frame, cutting mechanism operatively connected to the motor and including a plane cutter bar pivoted on an axis perpendicular to the axis of said motor and rotatable bodily about the latter axis whereby the intersection of the former axis with the bar may trace a circle to whose plane the motor axis is perpendicular. and means for feeding said bar longitudimilly into the work when said bar pivot axis is in any of its positions including a flexible feeding member operatively connected to the motor and to a fixed point adjacent the work, for causing said bar to thereafter make an arcuate cut on connection of said flexible mem' ber to said bar and for thereafter moving said bar rearwardly to make a withdrawing cut upon disconnection of said flexible member from said bar and its connection to a point adjacent the rear of said frame.
65. In a mining machine, a supporting frame movable along a trackway, a motor thereon having its axis horizontal and paralled to the length of said frame, cutting mechanism operatively connected to the motor and including a plane cutter bar pivoted on an axis perpendicular to the axis of said motor and rotatable by power from said motor bodily about the latter axis wherehy the intersection of the former axis with the bar may trace a circle to whose plane the motor axis is perpendicular. and means for feeding said bar longitudinally into the work when said bar pivot axis is in any of its positions including a flexible feeding member operativcly connected to the motor and to a fixed point adjacent the work, for causing said bar to thereafter make an arcuate cut on connection of said flexible member to said bar and for thereafter moving said bar rear \vardly to make a withdrawing cut upon disconnection of said flexible member from said bar and its connection to a point to the rear of said motor.

In a mining apparatus, a frame reciprocable longitudinally during cutting and comprising a motor having an armature shaft whose axis extends longitudinally of said frame, a swivel head rotatable on an axis parallel to a line which is parallel to the axis of said armature shaft, a cutter bar pivoted on said swivel head to swing in planes parallel to the axis of rotat on of said swivel head, driving connections between one end of said armature shaft and said cutter bar, means driven from the same end of said armature shaft for swinging said bar, and mechanism driven by the other end of said armature shaft for rotating said swivel head and for feeding said frame.
68. In a mining apparatus, a frame reciprocable longitudinally during cutting and comprising a motor having an armature shaft whose axis extends longitudinally of said frame, a swivel head rotatable on an axis in alinement with the axis of said armature shaft, a cutter bar pivoted on said swivel head to swing in planes parallel to the axis of rotation of said swivel head, driving connections between one end of said armature shaft and said cutter bar, and mechanism driven by the other end of said armature shaft for rotating said swivel head and for feeding said frame.
69. In a mining apparatus, a frame reciprocable longitudinally during cutting and comprising a motor having an armature shaft whose axis extends longitudinally of said frame, a swivel head rotatable on an axis in alinement with the axis of said armature shaft, a cutter bar pivoted on said swivel head to swing in planes parallel to the axis of rotation of said swivel head, driving connections between one end of said armature shaft and said cutter bar, means driven from the same end of said armature shaft for swinging said bar, and mechanism driven by the other end of said armature shaft for rotating said swivel head and for feeding said frame.
70. In a mining apparatus, a frame reciprocable longitudinally during cutting and comprising a motor having an armature shaft whose axis extends longitudinally of said frame, a swivel head rotatable in front of said motor on an axis parallel to a lineparallel to the axis of said armature shaft. a cutter bar pivoted upon an axis perpendicular to the plane thereof on said swivel head to swing in planes parallel to the axis of rota tion of said swivel head, motor driven connections for actuating said cutter bar, for swinging the same about the axis perpendicu lar to the plane thereof and for feeding said frame and bar, and means driven from the rear end of said armature shaft for rotating said swivel head.

In a mining apparatus, a frame movable longitudinally during cutting and including a motor disposed longitudinally of said frame and a swivel head, a cutter bar pivotally mounted on said swivel head for swinging movement about an axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation of said swivel head, means extending through said swivel head for actuating said cutter bar and for effecting swinging movement thereof by power from said motor, and means driven from the end of said motor remote from said swivel head for feeding said apparatus and for rotating said swivel head.

In a mining apparatus, a frame movable longitudinall during cutting and including a motor isposed longitudinally of said frame and a swivel head, a cutter bar pivotally mounted on said swivel head for swinging movement about an axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation of said swivel head, means extending through said swivel head for actuating said cutter bar, and means driven from the end of said motor remote from said swivel head for feeding said apparatus, for rotating said swivel head, and for swinging said bar.

In a mining apparatus, a frame movable longitudinally during cutting and including a motor isposed longitudinally of said frame and a swivel head, a cutter bar pivotally mounted on said swivel head for swinging movement about an axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation of said swivel head, and means driven by said motor for actuating said bar, for swinging the same, for feeding said apparatus, and for rotating said swivel head including power connections between the rear end of said motor and said swivel head.

In a mining apparatus, a motor having an armature shaft, a swivel head coaxial with said armature shaft, a cutter bar pivotally mounted on said swivel head, driving connections between said motor and said cutter bar, and selectively operable means for swinging said bar respectively operatively connected to the opposite ends of said armature shaft.

In a mining apparatus, a motor having an armature shaft, a swivel head coaxial with said armature shaft, a cutter bar pivot ally mounted on said swivel head, driving connections between said motor and said cutter bar, and selectively operable means for swinging said bar respectively operative ly connected to the opposite ends of said armature shaft, one of said last mentioned means including a flexible connection.

In a mining apparatus, a motor having an armature shaft, a pivoted cutter bar, operative connections between said motor and said cutter bar for effecting driving of the latter, and selectively operable means wholly supported on said truck for swinging said bar respectively operatively connected to the opposite ends of said armature shaft.

In a mining apparatus, a motor having an armature shaft, a pivoted cutter bar, operative connections between said motor and said cutter bar for effecting driving of the latter, and selectively operable means for swinging said bar respectively operatively connected to the opposite ends of said armature shaft, one of said last mentioned means including a flexible connection.

In a mining machine, a support, cutting mechanism thereon including a cutter bar carrying a cutter chain, means for supporting said bar on said support whereon said bar is adjustable bodily into positions in a plurality of intersecting planes, a motor for operating said cutter chain having its front end connected to drive the latter, and means operable from the rear end of said motor to effect bodily movement of said bar to the desired plane and to swing said bar in any plane to which it may be moved.
80. In a mining machine, a support, cutting mechanism thereon at the front end thereof including a cutter bar carrying a cutter chain, means for supporting said bar on said support whereon said bar is adjustable bodily into position in a plurality of intersecting planes, a motor for operating said cutter chain arranged longitudinally on said support, means operable by said motor to swing said bar in any plane to which it may be moved, and means operable from the rear end of said motor to effect such bodily movement of said bar.
81. In a mining machine, a truck, longitudinally disposed guiding means swiveled thereon about an axis parallel to the plane of said guiding means, cutting means movable longitudinally of said guiding means including a motor and a pivoted cutter carrying cutter bar, said motor arranged longitudinally on the support and having its front end connected to drive the cutters and means including a driving connection with the rear end of said motor whereby the pivot of said cutter. bar may be bodily rotated by power from said motor.

In a mining machine, longitudinally extending guiding means, a longitudinally extending motor reciprocable relative to said guiding means and between the ends thereof, motor reciprocating means including a power connectionwithsaidmotor,cuttingmechanism operatively connected to said motor including a forwardly extending vertically disposed pivoted cutter bar arranged in front of the motor, and means for swinging said bar about its pivot operatively connected with the rear end of said motor.
83. A mining machine, a support, guiding means thereon, a motor reciprocable relative to said guiding means and between the ends thereof, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivoted longitudinally extending bar, means operable by said motor for rotating the pivot of said bar about a longitudinally disposed axis, and selectively operable means respectively actuated by the opposite ends of said motor for swinging said bar about its pivot.
84. In a mining machine, a support, guid ing means thereon, a motor extending longitudinally of and reciprocable relative to said guiding means and between the ends thereof, cutting mechanism in front of and operatively connected to said motor and including a pivoted bar extending parallel to said guiding means, means for rotating the pivot of said bar about an axis disposed parallel to said guiding means, means for swinging said bar about its pivot actuated by the rear end of said motor, and motor operated mechanism for reciprocating said motor relative to said guiding means.

In a mining machine, a support, guiding means thereon. a motor extending longi tudinally of and reciprocable relative to said guiding means and between the opposite ends thereof, cutting mechanism in front of and operatively connected to said motor and including a pivoted longitudinally extending bar, means for rotating the pivot of said bar about a longitudinally disposed axis, and means operated by said motor for swinging said bar about its pivot including a flexible connection wound in by the rear end of said motor.
86. In a mining apparatus, a frame. a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame, and means for swinging said bar and for rotating said swivel head to change the plane of swing of said bar including a pair of coaxial gears driven by said motor and spaced apart in a direction longitudinally of said frame, driving connections between one of said gears and said swivel head, and driving connections actuated by the other of said gears to swing said bar.
87. In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame, and means for driving said cutter bar, for swinging the same, and for rotating said swivel head to change the plane of swing of said bar including a pair of coaxial gears driven by said motor and spaced apart in a direction longitudinally of said frame, driving connections between one of said gears and said head, and driving connections actuated by the other of said gears to actuate said bar and to effect swinging 7 thereof.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame, and means for feeding said frame, for swinging said bar, for rotating said swivel head to change the plane of swing of said bar and to actuate said bar including a pair of coaxial gears driven by said motor and spaced apart in a direction longitudinal- 1y of said frame, driving connections between one of said gears and said swivel head. frame feeding mechanism actuated by said same gear, and driving connections actuated by the other of said gears to swing the bar and to actuate the same.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame. a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction, means for actuating said bar and for effecting swinging movement thereof driven by one of said gears, and means for rotating said swivel head to change the plane of bar swing driven by the other of said gears.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cuter bar carried on said swivel head and swingably adjustable relative thereto, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction. means for actuating said bar and adjusting the same driven by one of said gears, and means for rotating said swivel head driven by the other of said gears.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried on said swivel head and swingably adjustable relative thereto, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction, means for actuating said bar and adjusting the same driven by one of said gears, means for rotating said swivel head driven by the other of said gears, and means for feeding said frame and cutter bar towards and from a working face actuated by said last mentioned gear.

In a mining apparatus, a frame. a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried on said swivel head and swingably adjustable relativ'e thereto, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction. one of said gears being disposed within said swivel head, means for actuating said bar and adjusting the same driven by one of said gears, and means for rotating said swivel head driven by the other of said gears.

In a mining apparatus, a frame,a swivel headon said frame, a cutter bar carried on said swivel head and swingably adjustable rel ative thereto, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction, one of said gears being disposed within said swivel head, means for actuating said bar and adjusting the same driven by one of said gears, means for rotating said swivel head driven by the other of said gears, and means for feeding said frame and cutter bar towards and from a working face actuated by said last mentioned gear. In a miningapparatus,aframe, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same. direction, one of said gears being disposed within said swivel head, means actuated by said last mentioned gear for actuating'said cutter bar and for swinging the same, means actuated by the other of said gears for rotating said swivel head, and means also actuated by said last mentioned gear for feeding said frame toward and from a working face.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction, means for actuating said bar and for effecting swinging movement thereof including a pair of parallel shafts driven from one of said gears, and means for rotating said head driven from the other of said gears.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction, means for actuating said bar and for effecting swinging movement thereof including a pair of parallel shafts driven from one of said gears, means for rotating said head driven from the other of said gears, and means for feeding said frame and cutter bar towards and from a working face actuated by said last mentioned gear.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction, means for actuating said bar and for effecting swinging movement thereof including a plurality of pairs of parallel shafts driven from one of said gears, and means for rotating said head driven from the other of said gears.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart .in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction, means for actuating said bar and for effecting swinging movement thereof including a plurality of pairs of parallel shafts driven from one of said gears, means for rotating said head driven from the other of said gears, and means for feeding said frame and cutter bar towards and from a working face actuated by said last mentioned gear.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swin'ging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction, means for actuating said bar and for etlecting swinging movement thereof including a plurality of pairs of parallel shafts, one of which is actuated by one of said gears, reversing driving connections between said shafts, and means for rotating said head driven from the other of said gears.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame, a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equiangular rates in the same direction, means for actuating said bar and for effecting swinging movement thereof includmg a plurality of pairs of parallel shafts, one of which is actuated by one of said gears, and reversing driving connections between said shafts, means for rotating said head driven from the other of said gears, and means: for feeding said frame and cutter bar towards and from a working face act uatcd by said last mentioned gear.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a swivel head on said frame. a cutter bar carried by said swivel head and pivotally mounted for swinging movement in planes parallel to the axis of said swivel head, an arcuate rack carried by said swivel head, a rotatable gear meshing therewith mounted in lixed space relation to said cutter bar at a point in advance of the pivot of the latter, a motor carried on said frame, a pair of gears coaxial with said motor but spaced apart in a direction longitudinally thereof and driven by said motor at equinangular rates in the same direction, means for rotating said swivel head driven by one of said gears, and means for actuating said cutter bar and rotating said first mentioned gear driven by the other of said last mentioned gears.

In a machine of the nature described, the combination with a body having a bearing which is on a longitudinal, horizontal axis, of a cutting mechanism supporting means having a neck seated rotatably in said bearing, a worm gear wheel seated on said neck. a worm shaft transverse to said neck and having a worm engaging said worm wheel. a power transmission shaft which is on said axial line, a first gear wheel rotatable on an axis parallel to a line parallel to the axis of said shaft and rotated by the latter, a second gear wheel meshing with the first and having an axial line which is transverse to said transmission shaft, and gearing intervening said second gear wheel and said worm shaft for transmitting motion to said shaft.

In a machine of the nature described, the combination with a body having a bearing which is on a longitudinal, horizontal axis, of a cutting mechanism supporting means having a neck seated rotatably in said bearing, a worm gear wheel seated on said neck, a worm shaft transverse to said neck and having a worm engaging said worm wheel, a power transmission shaft. which is on said axial line, a. first gear wheel rotatable on an axis parallel to a line parallel to the axis of said shaft and rotated by the latter, a second gear wheel meshing with the first and having an axial line which is transverse to said transmission shaft. and motion reducing gearing intervening said second gear wheel and said worm shaft for transmitting motion to said shaft.

In a machine of the nature described, the combination with a body having a bearing which is on a longitudinal, horizontal axis, of a cutting mechanism supporting means having a neck seated rotatably in said bearing, a worm gear wheel seated on said neck. a worm shaft transverse to said neck and having a worm engaging said worm wheel. a power transmission shaft which is on said axial line. a first gear wheel rotatable on an axis parallel to a line parallel to the axis of said shaft and rotated by the latter, a second gear wheel meshing with the first and having an axial line which is transverse to said transmission shaft, gearing intervening said second gear wheel and said worm shaft for transmitting motion to said shaft, and a clutch applied to a portion of said intervening gearing.

In a machine of the nature described, the combination with a body having a bearing which is on a longitudinal, horizontal axis. of a cutting mechanism supporting mean having a neck seated rotatably in said bearing. a worm gear wheel seated on said neck. a worm shaft transverse to said neck and having a worm engaging said worm wheel. a power transmission shaft which is on said axial line. a first gear wheel rotatable on an axi parallel to a line parallel to the axis of said shaft and rotated by the latter, a second gear wheel meshing with the first and having an axial line which is transverse to said transmission shaft, motion reducing gearing intervening said second gear wheel and said wo'rin shaft for transmitting motion to said shaft. and a clutch applied to a portion of said intervening gearing.

In a machine of the nature described, the combination with a body having a bearing which is on a longitudinal, horizontal axis. of a cutting mechanism supporting means having a neck seated rotatably in said bearing, a worm gear wheel seated on said neck, a worm shaft transverse to said neck and having a worm engaging said worm wheel, a power transmission shaft which is on said axial line, a first gear wheel rotatable on an axis parallel to a line parallel to the axis of said shaft and rotated by the latter, a second gear wheel meshing with the first and having an axial line which is transverse to said transmission shaft, a plurality of shafts intermediate the transmission shaft and the worm shaft, and gearing on said intermediate shafts.

In a machine of the nature described, the combination with a body having a hearing which is on a longitudinal, horizontal axis. of a cutting mechanism supporting means having a neck seated rotatably in said bearing. a worm gear wheel seated on said neck, a worm shaft transverse to said neck and having a worm engaging said worm wheel, a power transmission shaft which is on said axial line, a first gear wheel rotatable on an axis parallel to a line parallel to the axis of said shaft and
