My invention relates to mining machines. My invention has for its object to provide an improved machine adapted to use at will to insert either a vertical or a horizontal cut in the face of an entry. A further object of my invention is to produce an improved machine of this character which may be transported "from place to place upon a suitable truck, and maintained upon that truck during the several cutting operations. A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved machine wherein the cutting mechanism may be fed or adjusted expeditiously and with great facility into the desiredrelations with respect to the face, either when undercutting or shear cutting, the means for adjusting the machine preferably being power operated. Another object of my invention is to provide an ii'nproved machine adapted to use as an undercutter, which also provided with improved means whereby the bottom of the entry may be maintained at the desired level without supplemental shooting, etc., or whereby the undercut may be inserted upon widely different levels or inclinations relative to the track. A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved machine ot the character set forth which is especially adapted to use in the cutting of room necks leading from the entry, or to use as a track mounted longwall machii all as conditions may require. A still. tuit ier object of my invention is to provide a machine of improved and simplified construction which, while of a rugged character and well adapted to withstand the hard usage to which such machines are subjected in service, is also of. such construction that it may be very readily and cheaply manufactured and con veniently transported from place to place and adjusted into its several position with great tacilityand dispatch. These and other objects of my invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice. It will be understood, however, that this form of my improvement is used only for purposes of illustration and that the invention itself may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit.

adjustable clutch mechanism 23. Thus, it will be observed that when desired, through a suitable manipulation of the clutch mechanism 23 and the controller handle 9, power may be supplied from the motor 7 to raise or lower the support 11 relative to the truck frame 1 or the support may be held in various tilted positions. It will also be observed that in order that this adjustment may take place while the truck i at rest, I have also provided suitable adjustable clutches 24 on the ends of the shaft 6, by means of which the truck driving mechanism may, obviously, be disconnected from the motor and the latter thereafter operated in one direction or reversed when it may be necessary in adjusting the support 1.1.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it will be noted that the support 11 carries a suitable plate 25 which is centrally swiveled thereon at 26 and is likewise horizontally disposed and adapted to act as a support. As shown, this plate has rigidly connected to it, as by means of suitable bracing and supporting means 27 and 28, a suitable upstanding, elongated and longitudinally extending guiding and feed in frame 29, preferably comprising a plurality of parallel longitudinally disposed frame members 30 rigidly connected by a transverse plate 31 in such a manner as to form a rigid structure relative to which the mining machine, hereinafter described, and its operating motor 32 which i of the usual reversible type, may be adjusted longitudinally. As
r shown in Fig. 6, the motor 32 of the mining machine is disposed longitudinally of the frame and mounted on a suitable supporting plate 33 which is itself adapted to be slid bodily along suitable guidewa-ys 34 formed on the supporting and guiding frame 29. Obviously, the motor and its frame 33 may be thu adjusted in various ways. In a preferred form, however, the power necessary to make this adjustment is derived from the motor 32 and suitable transmission mechanism is provided whereby the motor may be adapted to feed the frame in either direction.
In the form of my invention shown, it will be observed (Fig. 6) that the rear end of the armature shaft 35 carries a beveled gear 36 constantly meshing with a plurality of oppositely disposed beveled gears 37 and 38, which are in turn carried on a suitable trans verse shaft 39 journaled in bearings 40, connected to the motor frame or the member 33, and freely rotatable at will with either of the gears 3'? and 38, depending upon the position of an adjustable clutch mechanism 41. (See Fig. 2.) As shown, this shaft 39 is vertically disposed and provided at its upper end with a worm 42 meshing with a suitable worm gear 43. As illustrated, this Worm gear 43 is carried upon a horizontally and longitudinally disposed shaft 44 j ournaled on the support 33 and carrying on its opposite end a worm 4-5 meshing with a worm gear 46. This worm gear 46 is in turn carried on a horizontally and transversely disposed shaft 47, likewise journaled on the support and having on its opposite extremity a worm 48 meshing with a worm gear 49 carried on a transverse shaft 50. As shown in Fig. 7, this transverse shaft 50 carries pinions 51 on its opposite ends, which in turn mesh with rack surfaces 52 formed on the members 30. Thus, it will be observed that the rotation of the ari'nature shaft 35 of the motor 32 may be transmitted in such a manner as to cause the motor to be fed bodily relative to the supporting and guiding frame 30, 31, and that through manipulation of the clutch mecha nism including the clutch lever 41, the motor may be fed in either direction or disconnected in such a manner as to remain stationary in any given position. Obviously, the movement of the motor may also be controlled through the action of a suitable controller 53, which of a type similar to the controller-8 and in turn controlled through manipulation of a suitable controller handle 54.
Operatively connected to the motor 32 and bodily movable therewith relative to the supporting and guiding means 30, 31, is the cutting mechanism. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, this cutting mechanism includes a cutter bar carrying the usual endless cutter chain 56, which is in turn equipped with the usual cutter bits 57 and adapted to be actuated by the rotation of a suitable chain driving sprocket 58. In the form of my invention shown, this chain driving sprocket is connected to the front end of the armature shaft 35 through beveled gears 59 and 60 of which the latter is connected directly to the sprocket through a suitable shaft 61, which is in turn vertically disposed in a suitable bracket or head 62, preferably swiveled on the front end of the mefor shaft. As shown, a clutch 63 is herein also provided between this shaft 61 and the chain driving sprocket 58 in such a manner that the cutter chain may be disconnected at will from the driving motor 32, as for instance when the latter is utilized to drive the feeding mechanism. However, it will be clearly apparent that when desired this clutch 63 may be connected at the same time that the motor 32 is operated, in such a manner that the cutter chain will be caused to rotate and cut the coal simultaneously with the forward feeding movement of the cutter chain and motor relative to the supporting and guiding elements 30, 31.
In my improvement, means are also provided whereby the cutter bar 55 may be adjusted angularly about the shaft 61 as an axis. For this purpose, it will be noted that the cutter bar 55 is provided with a bracket 64 (Figs. 1 and 2) which is journaled on the lower end of the shaft 61, and is also equipped with an arcuate rack 65 meshing with a pinion rect-ionto efi'ect its connection again, in such a manner as to cause the bar 55 to be swung downward from the position shown in Fig. 14 to the position shown in Fig. 15, so that, as the cutter chain continues to rotate during the swinging movement, an arcuate kerf is cut until the parts occupy the position shown in 15. hen this position is reached, the clutch 73 is again actuated to disconnect the mechanism for angling the bar, and the clutch controlling member 41 is actuated rcversely in such a manner as to cause the cutting mechanism to be fed rearward relative to the rack and thereby, as the cutter chain continues to rotate, cut out the remaining uncut portion of the kerf shown in Fig. 15, the operation continuing until the parts occupy the position shown in Fig. 16. When in this position and after a reversal of the motor, obviously if desired, by a simple further operation of the clutch 73 to throw it in, the bar may be returned to its normal or transport position shown in Fig. l and the machine transported on its truck to another entry, the movement of the truck then being controlled by the controller handle 9, 10.
In the use of my improved machine as a shearer, it may, however, be desirable to cut a vertical kerf in the side wall of an entry, as for instance in starting a room neck. Then it is desired to out such a kerf, it is only neces sary to remove the extension 10 of the controller handle and swing the entire mechanism about on the swivel member 25 from the transport position shown in Fig. 12 to the position shown in Fig. 17 and thereafter fix the jack 83in engagement with the roof and bottom, whereupon the entire cutting mechanism may be operated to insert a series of kerlts such as above described, in the side of the entry. Moreover, through the use of this swivel mounting, it is also possible to adapt the machine to cutting a vertical lrerf in an effective manner, even although the the tracks are not laid at the left hand side of the entry as shown in Fig. 12. For instance, the track rails may be laid at the right hand side of the entry, as shown in Fig. 18, in which case, with the bar disposed at the right hand side of the machine, as shown .in Fig. 12, the kerf would be cut at'a point too closely adjacent the right hand rib. However, through the use of my improved swivel mechanism, it will be noted that the entire cutting mechanism may be turned about this swivel in such a manner as to bring the end of the cutter bar more closely adjacent the center line of the entry and thus enable the end of the same at the completion of the shearing cut to lie in the center of the entry, or to intersect the center line of the entry in such a manner as to insure better results from shooting the coal. Obviously, through the provision of this swivelmechanism, a shear cut may also be inserted at practically any point in either rib of an entry or room or in a face substan: tially parallel to the track, by simply rotating the cutting mechanism into any desired angular position relative to the truck.
In the use of my improved construction in undercutting, substantially the same mechanisms are employed, and the cut is made in substantially the same manner. However, it will be observed that it is necessary for the cutter bar to be adjusted from the vertical position for making a shear cut to the horizontal position necessary to an undercut. This adjustment is readily accomplished through the utilization of the swivel mount ing of the cutter bar relative to the front end of the armature shaft of the motor, it being possible to swing the entire frame 62 and the cutter'bar from one position to another when ever desired by simply adjusting the clutch controlling the connection of the pinion when the motor 32 is operating in the desired direction. For instance, with the cutter bar in its vertical or shearing position shown in Fig. 3, it is'only necessary to'adjust this clutch and properly control the motor in order to swing the bar fromthat vertical position to the horizontal position desired in undercutting and shown, for instance, in Fig. 21 When the parts are in this position, it will be obvious that, the motor 32 being reversed from its direction of rotation during the downward swing, through the-actuation of the swinging mechanism for the bar, above oescribed, the latter may be adjusted angu larly into the position shown in Figure 19 in readiness to make its sumping or starting out.
Thereafter, the motor 32 being again reversed it will also be evident that in order to reciproa cate the bar to makethis cut, the clutch 63" controlling the cutter chain is next operated,
as well as the clutch controlling member ell, in such a manneras to cause the bar to move into the coal while its cutter chain is rotating, to produce the cut shown in Fig. 20. When the cutter bar reaches the position shown in that figure, the clutch 4:1 is again operated in such a manner as to disconnect the forward shown in Fig. 20 to the position shownin Fig. 22, and thereby complete the out.
In the use of my improved mechanism as an undercutter, it will also be evident that,

hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a mining machine, a support, cutting mechanism thereon including a swiveled cutter bar arrying a cutter chain, said bar being adjustable bodily into cutting position in a plurality of intersecting planes to position the same for the cutting of kerfs intersecting in lines extending longitudinally of said support, a motor for operating saidcutter chain, and means operable by said motor to eli ect said bodily movement of said bar to the desired plane and to swing said bar in any plane to which it may be moved.
2. In a mining machine, a vtrucl-z, longitudinally disposed guiding means swiveled thereon about an axis parallel to the plane of said guiding means, cutting means movable longitudinally of said guiding means and including a motor and a pivoted cutter bar, and means whereby the pivot of said cutter bar may be bodily rotated by power from said motor.v
3. In a mining machine, a wheeled support, longitudinally extending guiding means thereon, a motor reciprocable between the ends of said guiding means, motor reciprocating means including a rack carried by said guiding means, and cutting mechanism operati'vely connected to said motor including a forwardly extending vertically disposed horizontally pivoted cutter bar.
4. In a mining machine, longitudinally extending guiding means, a motor reciprocable relative to said guiding means and between 'the ends thereof, said motor having a power shaft disposed parallel to its path of reciprocation, motor reciprocating means including a power connection with said motor, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor including a forwardly extending vertically disposed horizontally pivoted cutter bar, and means for swinging said bar about its-pivot.
5. In a mining machine, a support, guiding means thereon, a motor reciprocable relative' to said guiding means and between the ends'thereof, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivoted longitudinally extending bar, means operable by said motor for rotating the pivot of said bar about a longitudinally disposed .axis,-and means for swinging said bar about its} pivot.

In a mining machine, a truck. guiding means pivotally mounted thereon for move ment about a vertical axis and projecting forwardly therefrom, cutting mechanism reciprocable in a substantially horizontal plane relative to said guiding means between positions in which it respectively overlies and is disposed wholly in advance of said truck, said cutting mechanism including a motor and a horizontally pivoted vertically disposed plane cutter bar driven thereby, means for maintaining said guiding means stationary in a given angular position, means driven by said motor whereby the same may be reciprocated, and means for swinging said bar about its pivot operated by said motor.

In a mining machine, a truck, elongated guiding means thereon, a motor reciprocable relative to said guiding means, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and reciprocable therewith including a cutter bar disposable in a vertical plane at an angle to the horizontal and relative to said motor, and a jack pivotally mounted on said guiding means adjacent the front end thereof.

In a mining machine, a truck, guiding means for which said truck constitutes the sole support during transport carried on said truck and normally extending longitudinally a substantial distance beyond the front end of the same, a motor reciprocable relative to said guiding means, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivoted cutter bar, operative connections between said motor and said guiding means whereby the former is reciprocated relative to the latter to position said motor wholly beyond the front end of the truck, and means for swinging said bar about its pivot when said motor is so disposed.

In a mining machine, a truck, guiding means swiveled thereon for horizontal swinging movement relative thereto and normally extending longitudinally a substantial distance beyond the front end of the same, said truck providing the entire support for said guiding means during transport, a motor reciprocable relative to said guiding means, cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor and including a pivoted cutter bar, operative connections between said motor and said guiding means whereby the former is reciprocated relative to the latter to position said motor wholly beyond the front end of the truck, and means for swinging said bar about its pivot when said motor is so disposed.

In a mining machine, a truck, longitudinally disposed guiding means thereon extending forwardly for a substantial distance, cutting mechanism movable longitudinally of said guiding means and including a pivoted cutter bar, and means whereby said cutter bar may be swung into a plane disposed beneath said guiding means or in a plane at right angles to said plane and when between the ends of the latter.

In a mining machine, a truck, pivoted longitudinally disposed guiding means there on extending forwardly therefrom for a substantial distance, cutting mechanism movable longitudinally of said guiding means and including a pivoted cutter bar, and means whereby said cutter bar may be swung on its pivot beneath said guiding means and when between the ends of the latter.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, a motor supported thereon and having a power shaft rotatable on a horizontal axis arranged longitudinally of said frame, frame moving means including elements adjacent either side of said frame and rotatable on axes parallel to a single line and operative on rotation to effect translation of said frame and driving means operative to effect rotation of either of said elements in either direction including operative connections including a plurality of clutches between said elements and said motor, and cutting mechanism carried by said frame and driven by said motor including a pivoted plane cutter bar adjustable into and operative to cut in a horizontal or in a vertical plane.

In a mining machine, a truck longitudinally disposed guiding means sWiveled thereon, cutting means movable longitudinally of said guiding means and including a motor and a pivoted cutter bar, and means whereby the pivot of said cutter bar may be bodily rotated by power from said motor to position said pivot in parallelism with diiferent sides of an angle.

In a mining machine, a truck, longitudinally disposed guiding means swiveled thereon, cutting means movable longitudinally of said guiding means and including a motor and a pivoted cutter bar, and means whereby the pivot of said cutter bar may be bodily rotated to position said pivot in parallelism with different sides of an angleor bodily translated rectilinearly by power from said motor.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck movable on a trackway, cutter mechanism including a cutter bar disposable in fixed relation at acute angles to the trackway and pivotally mounted on said truck, selfcontained power operated means supported on said truck for moving the bar when so disposed rectilinearly in a path extending longitudinally of the trackway but making an angle with the plane of the latter, relatively transversely in the same plane, and reversely rectilinearly to form a parallel ribbed kerf of a depth substantially equal to the length of the bar and in the face in front of the end of the trackway, and means, self-contained and power operated, for changing the plane of the kerf and operative to move said bar bodily about an axis extending longitudinally of the trackway and disposed in a vertical plane extending between the sides of the trackway.

In a mining machine, a support, cutting mechanism thereon including a swiveled cutter bar carrying a cutter chain, said bar being adjustable bodily into cutting position in different ones of a plurality of intersecting planes, a motor for operating said cutter chain and having driving pinions at opposite ends thereof, means operable by said motor to effect said bodily movement of said bar to the desired plane and to swing said bar in any plane into which it may be moved, and to effect bodily rectilinear movement of said bar in the planes thereof, said bodily rectilinear movement effecting means and said bar swinging means being actuated by pinions at opposite ends of said motor.

In a mining machine, a support, cutting mechanism thereon including a swiveled cutter bar carrying a cutter chain, said bar being adjustable bodily into cutting position in different ones of a plurality of intersecting planes, a motor for operating said cutter chain and having driving pinions at opposite ends thereof, means operable by said motor to effect said bodily movement of said bar to the desired plane and to swing said bar in any plane into which it may be moved, and to effect bodily rectilinear movement of said bar in the planes thereof, said bodily rectilinear movement effecting means and said bar swinging means being actuated by pinions at opposite ends of said motor, and said pinions rotating on an axis extending longitudinally of said support and said bar swinging means being actuated by said pinion which is nearer to said bar.

In a mining machine, a wheeled support, longitudinally extending vertically disposed guiding means thereon, a motor reciprocable in said guiding means between the top and bottom thereof and between the ends of said guiding means, motor reciprocating means, and cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor including a forwardly extending horizontally disposed pivoted cutter bar.
7 In a mining machine, a wheeled support, longitudinally extending guiding means arranged thereon in a Vertical plane, a motor reciprccable relative to said guiding means between the top and bottom thereof and between the ends thereof, motor reciprocating means, and cutting mechanism operatively connected to said motor including a forward ly extending vertically disposed pivoted cutter bar and means operable by power from said motor for swinging said bar about its pivot.
