My invention relates to furnaces having particular relation to stoker ram-box caps: One object of my invention is to provide a two-piece ram-box cap, whereby the part most subject to deterioration through the action of the furnace heat may be readily removed and replaced with a minimum expenditure of time, labor and materials.
Other objects and applications of my invention, as well as details of construction and arrangement, whereby my invention may be practiced will appear more fully hereinafter, when taken in *connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view ofthe front end of a furnace, illustrating the front section of the ram-box cap in position, and the rear extension in the act of being placed in position;

Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views taken on the lines IV-IV and V--V, respec front wall 2 and a plurality of rows of tuyere :provlde supporting shoulders which respectively engage the horizontal extensions 19 and 21. The latter are provided plates 3 alternating with retorts 4. Each rctort 4 extends into a passageway 5 in the wall 2 through which the fuel may be fed bythe usual ram mechanism (not shown).
The passageway 5 may comprise side walls G and 7 and a top wall 8. The furnace wall 2, of which a rear side 9 only is shown .in Fig. 1, may be constructed of bricliworlr.
In the practicable manufacture of fur- I have mounted the cap portion of a the upper part of the fuel passage 5, whereby the contour of the upper part of the fire may be controlled and the fuel caused to pack in the mout-h of the retorts 4 to a desired extent. Experience has shown, however, that the inner endonly of the rambox cap tends to deteriorate under the intense action of the fire, with the result that freram-box cap in quent replacements of the whole ram-box cap are necessary. placements necessitate the removal of a large amount of brickwork all of which must subsequently be replaced. Moreover, a large quantity the removal of each ram-box cap, since the inner end only is damaged. These undesirable results are overcome by my invention, experience having shown that repairs can be made in one-tenth the time originally required and with one-half the material. To this end, I provide a ram-box 10 with an elon ated two-piece ram-box cap 10 which iits t e upper portion of the furnace passage 5. The cap 10 comprises a front base section 11 and a rear section 12.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the base section 11 of the ram-box cap 10 comprises an inclined top wall 13, the opposite sides of which are extended downwardly to form vside walls 14 and 15. Inner surfaces 16, 17, and
18 of the walls 13, 14, and 15, respectively, yserve to guide the fuel as it passes through with recesses 25 and 26 for the reception of locking lugs 27 and 28, respectively, said lugs being positioned on the supporting plates 22. A longitudinal movement of the base section 11 inthe passage 5 is thus prevented.
A :reinforcing wall 29 extends transversely of the vbase section 11 adjacent to a front end 31 thereof, and it is connected at its ends with side wall portions 32 and 33, which merge into the inclined wall section ladjacent to a rear end 34 of said ybase section. 'Ihe latter end is provided with a transversely extending lug or shoulder 35 of wedge shape having beveled surfaces 36 and 37, for reasons as will presently appear. Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 6, and 7, the rear ram-box cap section 12 embodying my invention ma comprise side walls 39 and 41, the lower e ges of which engage the supporting shoulders 23 and 24, respectively. An ,inclined top wall 42, which extends bet*`- en the side walls 39 and 41, is contiguous to the inclined wall 13 of the base section 11, and it is so formed as to cause the fuel in the mouth of the retort 4 to be packed to the desired extent and the contour of the upper part of the fire fiattened to meet the desired operating conditions. A front wall 43 is provided with a shoulder portion 44 having a recess 45 on the under side thereof. A surface 46 of the recess 45 is beveled complementarily to the surface 36 of the shoulder 35.
The recess 45 is adapted to receive the upwardly extending shoulder when the parts are in the assembled position shown in Fig. 2, wherein it is noted that the complementarily beveled surfaces 36 and 4 6 are in engagement. The dimensions of the parts just mentioned are such that the rear cap section 12 may be unhooked from the base sect-ion l1 by raising the former a slight amount, say one-half inch. The cap section 12 may then be entirely removed from the fuel passage 5. A reinforcing rib 47 extends rearwardly from the wall 43 parallell to the side walls 39 and 4l and intermediate the same.
As shown in Fig. 1, the dimensions of the cap extension 12 are such that a single brick 48 is sufficient to close the portion of the fuel passage 5 immediately above the inner end of said cap extension.
When the inner end of the ram-box cap 10 deteriorates to such extent that replacement is advisable, it is only necessary to remove the brick 48 and thereafter raise the cap section 12, which represents the damaged portion, clear of the shoulder 35. The cap ."ection 12 may then be removed from the fuel passage 5 and replaced by a new cap section. A new brick 48 is now positioned over the inner end of the cap section 12 and the furnace is again in condition for operation.
While I have shown only one embodiment of 'my invention, for the purpose of describing the same and illustrating its principles of construction and operation, it is apparent that Various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention. I desire, therefore, that only such limitations be imposed thereon as are indicated in the appended claims or as are demanded by the prlor art.

and rear sections, side, top and end wall portions, said end Wall portion being provided with a recess, of which oneA surface is bevelled, and said front section having an upstanding` lug positioned in said recess in engagement with said bevelled surface.
2. The combination with a furnace wall of a ram-box positioned in said passage comprising a base portion and a cap portion, said cap portion comprising front and rear sections, said front section having an inclined wall affording a fuel-deflecting surface, and extensionsfrom said wall forming supporting shoulders adapted to be mounted on said base portion, said front portion having an upstanding lug, and said rear portion having a recess for said lug, whereby said sections may be detachably interlocked.
