Consequently, should the socket member 26 and collar 15 be rotated while the cap 37 is in engagement with a load, such as for example, the axle of an automobile, then there will be either a rotation of the collar 15 with respect to the main lifting member 12 to cause axial movement of the latter, or the main lifting member 12 may rotate with the collar 15 tooause axial movement of the supplemental lifting member 36 within the main lifting member 12. However, the jack must ordinarily be operated somewhat before it is positioned to bring the cap into contact with the load, and the present invention contemplates in addition to, the above described'mechanism, yielding means for resisting rotational movement of the main lifting member 12 relative to the standard 10, whereby to insure axial'movement of the main lifting member 12 within the collar 15 during initial operation of the 'ack.
] Preferably, this yielding means comprises two spring pressed plungers '50, mounted within a transverse passage 51 in the lower end of the main lifting member 12, a spring 52 being interposed between the plungers to urge them outwardly into contact with the inner wall of the standard 10. The inner wall of the standard, while of generally cylindrical' form is provided with surface irregularities which cooperate with the spring pressed plungers 50 in such a way as to in troduce a limited'impedance tending to resist rotation of the main lifting member 12 within the standard. The surface irregu-.
larities on the inner wall of the standard are preferably in the form of longitudinally extending ribs 53 projecting inwardly from the inner wall of the standard. The ribs 53 are of such height and of such shape that when engaged by the spring pressed plungers 50 they offer yielding resistance to the rotation of the main lifting member 12 within the standard; but when the rotational force upon the lifting member 12 is increased sufficiently, then the spring pressed plungers may ride over the ribs 53 thus permitting rotation of the main lifting member 12 within the standard. Any desired number of ribs or corrugations may be provided but there should be three or more to provide means for guiding and for the lateral sup port of the main lifting member 12 within rotation.

The abutment at the lower end of the in ner member 36 is preferably the pin 54 which may be inserted in place through a suitable opening 56 in the lower end of the screw 12. This pin strikes against the shoulder 55, at the upper end of the outer screw, when inner screw is fully extended.

In assembling the device, the main lifting member 12 with the secondary lifting member 36 threaded therein, is passed upwardly through the standard from the bottom, through the ball bearing 17, and the threaded collar 15, the socket member 26 having been previously mounted within the passage 25. In order to permit ready insertion of the socket member 26, the standard is cut away at one side, as indicated by the numeral 6A, to provide the necessary clearance. The main lifting member 12 having been threaded through the collar 15, a pin 66 is mounted in the upper end of the member 12 to serve as a stop to prevent the member 12 from becoming disengaged from the collar 15 during its downward or retractive movement.
\Vhile the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise form of apparatus, and that changes may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims,
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A lifting jack comprising a hollow standard, main and secondary lifting members disposed in said hollow standard, and means adapted to be actuated to automatically effect successive axial movements of said lifting members, said means comprising not less than three longitudinally extending ribs carried by the hollow standard for guiding the movement of the main elevating member, and impositive control means interposed between the main lifting member and constituting a limited impedance cooperating with said ribs to cause xial movement of the main elevating member during extension and retraction thereof.
2. A lifting jack comprising, a hollow standard, an internally threaded collar rotatably mounted in the standard, a sleeve lifting member externally threaded to engage with the thread in the coilar and internally threaded to engage a secondary lifting member, a secondary lifting member externally threaded to cooperate with the sleeve member, means for rotating the collar, and means tending to prevent rotation of the sleeve, said means comprisin longitudinally extending ribs carried by the hollow standardadapted to guide the movements of the sleeve member, and yielding means carried by the sleeve yieldingly engaging said ribs during extension and retraction of said sleeve member.
3. A lifting ack comprising a hollow standard, an internally threaded collar rotatably mounted in the standard, a sleeve lifting member externally threaded to engage wit the thread in the collar and internally thread- I secondary lifting member externally threaded to cooperate with the sleeve member,
means for rotating the collar, and impositive locking means carried by said sleeve and said standard and interposed therebetween tending to prevent rotation of the sleeve, said yielding means constituting a limited impedance comprising a longitudinal surface irregularity formed on one of said parts and a spring pressed plunger carriedby the other ofsaid parts and adapted to cooperate with said surface irregularity throughout retraction and elevation of said sleeve.
4. A lifting jack comprising a standard, outer and inner nesting screw lifting members mounted in the standard for extension and retraction, a threaded operating member for the screw lifting members rotatably carried bythe standard and in screw threaded operating engagement with the outer of said screw lifting members, means for rotating said operating member, and yielding control means interposed directly between the said standard and outer screw member for yieldingly resisting rotation of the said outer screw member during the extension and retractionthereof.
5. A lifting jack comprising a hollow standard, a threaded operating member rotatably mounted in the standard, a threaded sleeve lifting member, said sleeve lifting' member beingthreaded to engage with the threaded operating member and also to engage a secondary threadedlifting member, a secondary threaded lifting member threaded to cooperatively engage with the sleeve lifting member, means for rotating the operating member, and yielding control means interposed between the said standard and outer screw member for yieldingly resisting rotation of the sleeve lifting memberduring rotation of the operating member, said yielding control means comprising a spring pressed member carried by said sleeve lifting member and engaging with the said standard to provide a limited impedance to rotation of the said sleeve lifting member.
6. A lifting jack comprising a hollow standard, main and secondary lifting members disposed in said hollow standard and each of the said members constructed for rotational movement with respect to the standard,
means, independent of the load on the jack for effecting extension of the ack, said means comprising a threaded member in engagement with the main lifting member and impositivo locking means interposed between the main lifting member and the standard constituting a limited impedance and means for preventing disengagement of said threaded and said mam lifting members during extension of the jack.
