This invention relates to new and useful improvements in needle shogging mechanisms for blind stitchsewing machines, and has for its principal object to provide a shogging mechanism wherein the needle lever is positively moved during both strokes of each reciprocation whereby the needle Wlll enter the fabric with certainty at the predetermined points of needle penetration.
rVith these and other objects in view which will more fully appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by following the description, the appended claim, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,
I have shown my invention as applied to the stitching head 5 of a Lewis type of blindstitch sewing machine.
The needle 6 is fixed to one arm 7 of a needle lever 8 having a hub 9 journaled on a horizontal shaft 10 fixed to the stitching head 5. The needle 6 cooperates with a complemental stitch forming mechanism which in this instance is indicated as a rotary hook 11 arranged directly in front of the needle 6. The horizontal shaft 10 has its axis in a plane at right'angles "to the lineof feed and consequently in the construction shown the j needle6 will oscillate in plane parallelto the line of 'feed. I f j I 1 In order to oscillate the needle lever 8 abo'ut'its supporting shaft 10, 1 have con nected the other arm 12 of said 'need'le lever with a vertically disposed link 13, the upper end of thelink being pivotally connected to one arinlt of a belhcrank lever 15 which is fulcrumed on the stitching head 5 as-at'16. The other arm 17 of the bell crank lever is pivotally connected to the'lower end-of av pitman 1'8 and the upper end of this pitman is 'pivotally connected to an eccentric pin 19 fixed to the .end of a horizontal jack shaft '20 which is journaled in the stitching head 5. y

In order to permit the needle lever 8 .to reciprocate-along its supporting shaft 10 so as to impart shogging movements to the needle, I have provided the lower end of the link 13 with'a fixed pin 23 and the arm 12 of the needle lever ,8 not only haspivotal connection with said pin but is' also capable of having sliding movements relative thereto, Thus whenthe needlelever 8 is bodily reciprocatedalong the shaftlO, the arm 12.0f
said lever will also 'move bodily longi downwardly to a point in front of the flanges 25, and secured to the lower end of the arm 28 is a block 30 which has sliding connection within the groove'24 and against the inner v faces of the flanges 25. The horizontal arm 29 of the bell crank lever is providedwith a cam fork 31 which has direct contact at all times with the periphery of an actuating cam 32. This cam 32 is provided with two concentricperipheral portions 33 and 34, respectively, of different radii, the portion 33 having the largest radius. These, concentric portions are disposed opposite to each other, and the portion 33 extends from the point a to the point 5, as shown in Fig. 6, whereas the portion 345extends from the point 0 to the point at. The axis of the camis: indicated at 35. The cam 32 is fixed to a horizontal shaft 36 which is driven from the hook shaft 37 by means of a 1 to 4 gear coupling 38. The. hook shaft 37 is journaled at the rear of the stitching head 5- and is operatively connected 7 to; the hook 11., The upper end of the hook shaft -37 is driven from the gear coupling 22 by a 1 to 2 gear 39, whereby the hook shaft will be: rotated twice to every revolution of the main shaft. Consequently, the needle lever 8;.willbe oscillated during every rotation of the main: shaft 21;,whereas the cam- 32 willbe givenacompleterotation during-every two complete oscillations of the needlelever.v
