SEPARABLE HOSE CONNECTER Filed Jan. 14, 192.8
Patented Nov. 5, r 1929 UNITED ENOCH J. ASHLEY, OF WATER/BURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB TO STEELEKF, JOHNSON MFG. CO., OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION SEPARABLE HOSE CONNECTER Application med January 14, 1928. Seria1 No. 246,702.
This invention relates to improvement in separable hose-connecters and particularly to separable connecters for coupling the hose or tubing of devices, such as washing-machines, dish-washing and other sprays, to
7 threads for engagement with a clampingmember, and a plurality of substantiallyradial clamping-screws for securing it to the end of thesaid faucet; a hose-fitting comprising a tubular shank and a sealing-flange;
a clamping-member having a bore for the clearance of the said tubular shank, a seat for the said sealing-flange, and screw-threads for engagement with the threads upon the said faucet-fixture; and a resilient washer in- 3 terposed between the inner face of the sealing-flange of the said hose-fitting and the outer end of the said'faucet; whereby, when the said clamping-member is screwed upon the said faucet-member, the said resilient washer will be compressed between the outer end of the faucet and the inner face of the sealing-flange of the said hose-fitting.
My invention further consists in a separable hose-connecter characterized as above and 1 having certain other details of construction and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter describedand particularly recited in the claims.-
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a faucet provided with my improved separable hose-connecter; V
Fig. 2 is a broken verticalcentral section thereof;
Fig. 3 is a broken view in elevation corresponding to Fig. 1, but showing the hose-fitting and clamping-member detached from the faucet-member; 1

Fig. 5 is aview thereof, partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section;

Fig. 7 is a view thereof in side elevation;
Fig. 8 is a detached top or plan View of the clamping-member of my improved separable hose-connecter Fig. 9 is a View thereof, partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section; and t Fig. 10 is a detached perspective view of the resilient washer.
In carryingout my inventionv as herein shown, I employ a sleeve-like faucet-fixture 15 provided near its upper end with three equidistant radially-arranged threaded holes 16 for the reception of an equal number of clamping screws 17, by means of which it which serves to prevent the outward displacement of a resilient washer 24 of rubber, fiber,
or other suitable yielding material.
' sults in the production of a guard-shoulder 23 Seated against the under-face of thewasher 24 above mentioned is the washer-like sealing-flange 25 of a hose-fitting, which also comprises a centrally-depending tubular shank 26. The said shank 26 is attached to the sealing flange 25 by spinning its inner end 27 over the inner face thereof, so as to crowd the outer face of the said sealing-flange against an outwardly-spun shoulder 28 formed upon the said shank in such manner that the same forms a unitary structure with the flange 25 aforesaid. A hose 29 is sleeved over the tubular shank 26 of the hose-fitting for the purpose of conducting the water from the 1 end the said clamping-member is provided with a laterally-extending annular bead 35, the external periphery of which iskn-url-ed, as shown, to facilitate its being screwed in place within the lower end of the faucetmixture by the fingers of the user.
As thus constructed and arranged, the faucet-fixture of my improved separable hoseconnector is adapted: to be firmly secured to faucets of widely-varying types and sizes by means of the radialv screws 17, the diameter of the upper-end bore 21 in the said fixture being designed to accommodate the largest size faucet-spout commonly in use, and the radial screws 17 being relied upon to extend inward sufiiciently to engage the said spout, whether the same be round, oval, or of other form.
" When it is desired to disconnect the hose 29from the faucet, it isonly necessary to unscrew the clamping-rnember 33 from the threads" 22 of. the faucet-fixture 15, whereby the said clamping member, together with the hose andhose-fitting, may be removed as a unit, leaving the faucetliXture in place upon the faucet, as'shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings,
. the guard-shoulder 23 of the faucet-fixture at this time acting to prevent the withdrawal of the resilient washer; 2% from the faucetfixture. It will be noted that, owing tothe fact that the end of the hose 29 is larger in diameter than the diameter of the clearance passage 31 in the clamping-member 33, the said clampingrmeniber will be prevented from sliding inward upon the said hose, so
that it normally remains in proper place ready for convenient coupling with, the faucet-fixture.
'- It will be noted that when the hose-fitting and clamping-member are assembled with the faucet-fixture and the former firmly screwed into the latter, the inner faoe of the sealingflange 25 of the hose-fitting will be forced against the outer face ofthe resilient washer 24, which, in turn, will have its inner-face forced against the lower end of the spout 18 of the faucet 19, sothat leakage between the lower end of the said spout and the washer and the inner face of the said flangeanembzeri 25 and the outer face of the said washer will be effectively prevented. 1
I claim 1, 1. As a new article of manufacture a sep specificatiom for attaching the said faucet-fixture to the end of a faucet'ra hose-fitting comprising a tubular hose-receiving shank and a sealingflange at the upper end thereof; an inverted cup-shaped externally-threaded clamping- Inemberadapted to be screwed within the said faucet-fixture and having its end-wall formed with :a: centering passage for the passage of the tubular shank of the said hosefitting, and. providing a seat upon its inner face for said sealing flange; a resilientv washer interposed between the inner face of the sealing-flange of the said hose-fitting and the outer end of the said'fau'cet; and a hose sleeved over the said hose-receiving shank and having its end: extended upward intothe said inverted cup-shaped clamping-member in position to engage the outer face of the end vall thereof to limit its axialdisplacelnent; whereby, when the said clamping member is unscrewed from the said faucetiixture, the said resilient washer will be positively retained on the shoulder in the latter and the saidclamping-member will be pre vented from sliding inward over the hose by the engagement of the end of the latter with the end-wall of the cup-shaped clampingmember.
2. As a new article: of manufacture a separable hOse-cOnnecter comprising a faucet:- finture provided with means for attaching to it the terminal of a faucet and formed with an axial bore having an upwardly facing washer-retaining shoulder therein; screw threads formed upon'the saidfaucet-fixture for inter-engagement with the threaded portion of a clamping-member; a packingwasher resting upon the upwardly facing shoulder .fixtulre to force the said packing-washer against the end of a faucet; wherebythe said packing-washer is retained in place in the said faucet-fixture in line with the faucet when the saidclalnping-member is unscrewed therefrom. c v
In testimony whereof, I have-signed this ENooH J. ASHLEY. I
